How to use the friend safari in pokémon x and y

Once the player has entered the Hall of Fame, they are able to access Kiloude City and thus the Friend Safari. At the Friend Safari, the player is able to access Safaris for any Friends that are successfully registered in the 3DS’s friend list (regardless of whether or not that person has played Pokémon X and Y). Each Safari has designated Pokémon that can be encountered, all belonging to a designated type; these are determined by the Friend’s friend code and will not change. As such, any players who successfully register a given friend code in their 3DS will all be able to access the exact same Friend Safari. There is no way for the player to access the Friend Safari for their own 3DS.

Friends who have been recognized in the PSS will usually be represented in the Friend Safari list by the avatar they were last seen with on the PSS, while Friends who have not been seen will be represented by a “?” icon. However, if the player has added more than 100 Friends (by deleting some at some point), the earliest-seen avatars may begin to be forgotten and revert to “?” icons until they are next seen on the PSS; this does not affect the rest of the Safari’s status, however. Also, if a Friend is deleted from the 3DS’s friend list and then readded later, their Safari may retain the status it had before it was deleted.

All Friend Safaris have three Pokémon that may be captured. Only Pokémon from the first two “slots” are available until the Friend to whom that Safari belongs enters the Hall of Fame and subsequently appears online in the PSS at the same time as the player (thereby also allowing the PSS to recognize the Friend if it had not already). Once all three “slots” are unlocked the Pokémon encountered in that Friend’s Safari will thereafter have a chance of having their Hidden Ability. Pokémon encountered in the Friend Safari are guaranteed to have at least two IVs of 31 and have a higher chance of being Shiny. When checking for Shininess, the game generates up to four extra personality values to attempt to find a Shiny value, resulting in a rate of 5/4096; this effect can stack with the Shiny Charm, which results in a rate of 7/4096. [1]

All Pokémon that appear in the Friend Safari are level 30 (causing some, such as Muk and Drapion, to be underleveled). Pokémon can be found in the Friend Safari regardless of being game-exclusive Pokémon or otherwise unobtainable in either version.

Pokémon

In the tables below, note that “rate” does not refer to encounter rate but rather the likelihood for a Pokémon to have been selected for that “slot” of a Friend Safari. All Pokémon that can appear in a given Friend’s Safari have the same encounter rate.

You’ll discover plenty of things to do while exploring Kiloude City, one of the more popular destinations in Pokemon X and Y . We already covered the exciting Battle Maison . Now it’s time to go on a Friend Safari, where you’ll have opportunities to capture Pokemon you would otherwise have to trade with other players or transfer from previous games to obtain.

To go on a Friend Safari in Pokemon X and Y, you must select from registered players on your friend list. In fact, you stand to gain even more Pokemon if the chosen friend currently plays X or Y. In addition, you’ll unlock a different Friend Safari for each registered friend code. Naturally, the more Safaris you access, the more Pokemon you’ll collect.

To capture Pokemon during a Friend Safari, head outside and run through the tall grass. Pokemon you discover will correspond to the Safari type you chose. For instance, opting to go on an Ice Safari means finding Cloyster, Delibird and Sneasel, among others, while a Fire Safari may result in capturing Charmeleon, Larvesta or Magmar, to name a few.

Friend Safari Tips

  • Pokemon captured during a Safari may possess hidden abilities.
  • Normally you find two Pokemon on a Safari, but if the person registered entered the Hall of Fame, you’ll get three.
  • After going on a Safari, talk to the Judge in Kiloude City to reveal their potential.

Here’s the complete list of Pokemon, by Safari type, that you can find. Pokemon with * after their names are ones you would only be able to get from a Pokemon Professor or via trades.

There seems to be some confusion on the forums as to how the pokemon safari operates, hopefully this will clear up any questions you have regarding its intricacies.

What is the Friend Safari?
The friend safari is an area where you can visit registered pokemon friends safaris and catch up to 3 pokemon.

How do I get to it?
After you have finished the elite four travel to the Lumiose City Train Station, and upon entering Prof. Sycamore will give you a Rail Ticket which allows travel to Kiloude City. On the left side of the city there is a larger than usual building with a red roof. This is the Friend Safari.

Why do I care?
Because in each friend safari there are immediately 2 pokemon on level 30. These pokemon are usually available somewhere in the Kalos region, but may be version exclusive (eg, Swirlix, Cloyster). Catching these can let you skip grinding levels to fill your pokedex or relying on the GTS.

But your really care Because.
The 3rd pokemon!
This is only accessible after your friend has defeated the champion at the end of the elite four *AND* they have come up in your friends list in the game.
This pokemon is almost always not naturally occurring in the game (eg. Starters, Evolutions, Pre-evolutions) and often is exclusively available through the Friend Safari (eg. Crawdaunt, Gastrodon, Sunkern, Clefairy)

http://www.serebii.net/xy/friendsafari.shtml
This is a good resource showing a list of the various pokemon obtainable through the Friend Safari.

The First Steps
Find someone to befriend and enter their Friend Code into your ‘Friends List’ found on the 3DS home screen. Once you have added each other the friendship will go from ‘Provisional’ to either ‘Online’ or ‘Offline’

Getting the good pokemon
First, ensure you have both completed the elite four and have access to the friend safari. Then, you both need to have your in-game Internet turned on. After this has happened the 3rd blank slot in the pokemon safari card will be available.

You can now catch what is normally their most scarce pokemon.

But, I’ve done everything and their avatar is still only showing a ‘?’
This means something has gone wrong, first check that your internet is turned on – not just the wireless, you need the blue wi-fi icon in game to say ‘Internet’ over the top of it.

If you’ve done this and there is still no change its almost certainly that they haven’t yet turned their internet on in game. If you know their GFAQs account you could try sending them a private message, otherwise just wait patiently with your internet turned on.

For this purpose I actually leave my 3DS open and connected to the internet overnight to try and pick up connections from those who still haven’t logged on.

Their avatar is displaying correctly, but the 3rd square is still blank!
This issue occurs when you have seen each other online, hence registering the avatar, but they still haven’t defeated the elite four. Alternatively, you haven’t both been online at the same time since they have defeated the elite four, and the system is just showing the last known version of the safari (unconfirmed)

If you’ve been vigilant at catching all the Pokémon you come across in your adventures across Kalos, then you’ll probably end up with a Pokédex of 300-400 Pokémon. You can build it up through more trading and battling other players, but you can also visit the new Safari Zone, redesigned for Pokémon X and Y.

Dubbed the Friend Safari Zone, this zone gets populated depending on the amount of friends you have. With each registered friend code, you’ll get a new square zone to explore, each one populated with various Pokémon depending on the element listed on the Safari select zone.

You’ll find the Safari Zone in Kiloude City, which will be accessible after you completely beat the game, watch the credits, and visit Professor Sycamore in the Lumiose City Train Station. The Safari Zone house is located in the top most right corner of that city.

There will be up to three different Pokémon available to catch, though only two if the friend hasn’t beaten the Elite Four. The best part is that the registered friend doesn’t even need to own or play a Pokémon game in order for a Friend Safari Zone to be available. If the player is online at the same time you’re exploring their respective Safari Zone, the Pokémon will get Hidden Abilities as well.

The difference between Safari Zone in X/Y and previous games is that there is no timer to worry about, nor are there special Safari balls you have to use, allowing you to use any Pokeballs you have in your inventory.

Register tons of friends, then capture hidden Pokemon to complete your Pokedex.

One of the interesting, and possibly misunderstood, additions to Pokemon X and Y is the highly social Friend Safari. The successor to Safari Zone is inherently social, but in a completely different way from smartphone games like Candy Crush Saga. The quantity of your Pokemon playing friends is not as important as their quality, or to better put it, their skill level. An early heads up, you have to finish the main game before trying this out.

After you defeat the Elite Four, you can go to Lumiose’s train station, where Professor Sycamore is waiting with a Rail Ticket to Kiloude City. At the left of the city is a house with a red roof, also pictured below. This is Friend Safari.

In Friend Safari, you can visit safaris your fellow Pokemon playing friends have made and registered. You will be able to catch three Pokemon there. Two of them are Level 30 Pokemon, and are frequently console exclusive. The third Pokemon is one of those only available in Friend Safari.

Awesome, right? But to make use of Friend Safari, you’ll need to have friends in real life, who have also finished Pokemon X and Y I mean.

Let me lay out the steps to ensure you can get a 3 rd Pokemon:

1. When you find a fellow Pokemon player who will work with you, enter their Friend Code into your Friends List, from the 3DS Home screen. Your Friendship status should change from Provisional to either Online or Offline.

2. Next, you both need to have beat the Elite Four and received access to the Friend Safari.

3. Finally, make sure your wireless is on and turn on Internet in game. If everything has gone without a hitch, you will be able to get 3 Pokemon from the Friend Safari.

Now, here are some tips to make the most out of Friend Safari:

· Use a Pokemon with Trace as the leader. This way, you can check if the Pokemon you come across already has their Primary Ability, Secondary Ability, or Hidden Ability.

· Give your leader the Smoke Ball, so that it can easily escape from hairy situations.

· If you’re looking for Dittos for breeding, use Pokemon with Sturdy Ability as leaders. Sturdy will bring Dittos down to as much as 1 HP. These Pokemon should not have any damage dealing moves. Bergmite is ideal. When the Ditto transforms it, you can easily swap it out and hit the Ditto hard. To improve your chances of catching it, try paralyzing or putting it to sleep as well.

After you become the Champion, Professor Sycamore gives you the TMV Pass so you can reach Kiloude City.

How to Get to Kiloude City

After you defeat the Elite Four and the Champion, go to Lumiose Station on North Boulevard of Lumiose City. Talk to Professor Sycamore there and he will give you the TMV Pass. Check on the orange ticket machine next to the train to ride to Kiloude City.

Explore Town

After the train drops you off, talk to the girl on the left to take a pokémon quiz. If you get the correct answer, she gives you a Max Revive.

Go outside. An old guy gives you the Vs. Recorder. You can use it to record videos of your battles. You can upload them to the Internet and search for other players’ videos as well.

In the Pokémon Center, a purple-haired guy on the left will judge the potential of any pokémon in your party.

In the house east of the Pokémon Center, the girl upstairs will give you TM91 Flash Cannon.

Go up the stairs east of that house, then go east to find a Nugget.

Battle Maison

Go west from there to find the Battle Maison. In the Battle Maison, you can battle many trainers, but you earn BP instead of Exp. You can exchange the BP for items, such as EV-boosting items, trade evolution items, and TMs.

Be sure to win at least one battle in the Battle Maison now. You have to do this in order to get your Mega Ring upgraded. You can interrupt the challenge after one battle. The next time you visit the Battle Maison, you can pick up where you left off.

Battle Your Neighbor

After you win at least one battle in the Battle Maison, go to the north end of Kiloude City. You will find your neighbor. Talk to your neighbor to do battle. Your neighbor has a level 66 Meowstic, a level 68 Clefable, a level 66 evolution of Eevee (Vaporeon if you chose Froakie, Leafeon if you chose Chespin, Jolteon if you chose Fennekin), a level 70 starter that is strong against your starter, a level 67 Altaria, and a level 68 Mega Absol.

After the battle, your neighbor gives you Absolite and says to meet Professor Sycamore at the sundial of Anistar City.

Go to the Anistar City sundial. The professor is standing in front of the giant pink crystal. He’ll explain his theory about Mega Stones and the Mega Ring, and he’ll ask you to touch the crystal. Just press a button to touch it. After that, you can find hidden Mega Stones from 8PM to 9PM. Check the mega evolution page for a full list of Mega Stone locations.

Continue Exploring Kiloude City

Back in Kiloude City, in the house west of the Battle Maison, Ace Trainer Anton asks you a bunch of questions about Levitating pokémon. All of the answers are correct. Then he asks if you want to battle his Levitating pokémon. He has a level 65 Weezing, a level 65 Bronzong, and a level 66 Eelektross.

North of Ace Trainer Anton’s house, in the left-hand house, there is a girl at the table on the right who will give you TM58 Sky Drop.

If you go all the way east from that house, you will reach the Friend Safari. Use the Dowsing Machine outside of the Friend Safari to find a hidden PP Up on a bush.

In the Friend Safari, you can go on a safari in which you can catch different types of pokémon. There is a Safari for each person you have registered in your Nintendo 3DS Friends List. Each friend’s safari features a specific type of pokémon, and each safari can have up to three pokémon in it. The safari will have three pokémon in it if your friend has beaten the Elite Four. The pokémon in the safari will have their Hidden Ability if you and the friend have been online in Pokémon X or Y at the same time.

North of the Friend Safari, there is a pond with a fence around it. Use your Dowsing Machine to find a hidden Max Revive in the corner.
