Sulfur is a mineral present in every cell in our body, with its greatest concentration in hair, skin and nails. It has often been called the “beauty mineral” and the “healing mineral” because of its ability to promote circulation and decrease inflammation. These qualities also lend to the theory that adequate amounts of sulfur can jump-start hair growth in people with deficiencies. How to use garlic as a hair loss remedy

The bioactive components of garlic have been extensively researched and have been proven to have many therapeutic and preventative effects on various diseases and health problems (Santhosha, Jamuna & Prabhavathi, 2013). Recently, a study has found that garlic oil has significant effects on treating alopecia areata, a recurring, non-scarring type of hair loss which results in coin-sized patches of baldness on the individual (Hajheydari et al., 2007). The study was done on a sample size of 40 patients (20 control and 20 treated with garlic treatment) with significant improvements observed in 90% of the patients after three months and no recorded side effects. This study serves to bolster anecdotal claims of garlic containing hair-stimulatory effects.

A rich source of sulphur, vitamin C and iron: KEY hair growth nutrients

Sulphur: anti inflammatory and key component of keratin

Garlic has high levels of sulphur, Vitamin C and iron, all of which have been proven to aid in combating hair loss. Sulphur from garlic has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects which prevents inflammatory disorders from targeting hair follicles and prevents hair from growing (Lee et al., 2012). It is also one of the main building blocks of keratin which constitutes our hair, nails and other epidermal tissues; deficiencies can result in hair loss and brittle nails.

Vitamin C:

In a study by Sung et al., ascorbic acid 2-phosphate, a derivative of Vitamin C, was used to treat patients with androgenic alopecia (2006). The study found that there was “significant growth stimulation” in the cells located in the scalp, and the study eventually concluded that the vitamin C derivative promoted hair follicle growth in hair follicles.

Vitamin C which is an essential water-soluble vitamin that cannot be produced by our bodies is also found in garlic, which enhances the absorption of iron and is needed for a wide range of bodily functions (Weber, Bendich & Schalch, 1996). It enhances the development of hair and increases the strength of hair structures.

Anti-fungal properties

Garlic has anti-fungal properties due to the presence of allicin, an oxygenated sulphur amino acid which is produced when garlic is crushed (Ankri & Mirelman, 1999). Upon crushing, an enzyme rapidly converts allicin from its stable precursor alliin into the more biologically active allicin, which exhibits antibacterial activity against a wide range of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria such as E. Coli and Candida albacans. This is important in the treatment of hair loss due to the presence of a naturally occurring fungus, Malassesia globose, which breaks down the oil on the scalp leading to hair loss.

How to apply garlic to make hair grow

There are several methods available to apply garlic juice to your scalp. The most straightforward method is to rub garlic bulbs on the skin and wash after 10 minutes. However, in order to obtain greatest effect, it is recommended to use crushed garlic juice as the crushing process activates enzymes contained in the garlic. It must be noted that crushed garlic juice is incredibly potent and will likely result in skin irritations if applied directly; hence it is recommended to mix with other substances in order for it to work as a topical treatment. Common options are honey, coconut oil and even simply soaking the bulbs in oil overnight and applying the resulting concoction.

In conclusion, garlic has been shown to have beneficial impact on hair growth and can serve as an easy, effective and hence attractive alternative to conventional medicine with regards to treating hair loss.

This is a first for me. I know about so many other oils that are awesome for our hair like Olive oil, Grapeseed oil, Coconut oil, but GARLIC OIL. Yea, I turned my nose up at the idea at first. I love garlic! I cook just about everything using it and keep minced garlic in my fridge all the time. I also take garlic pills and have taken them for years and waaayyy before I even had kids. I take it to help with my cholesterol and I take more of it when I’m sick. I’m a big fan of it but I am kinda shocked this is my first time hearing about it for hair and for being a great remedy for hair loss.

Did you realize that Garlic and the humble onion may be used topically as a natural baldness and hair loss treatment?

A hair loss remedy can be natural and made with herbs and vitamins, and garlic and onions certainly count as being natural ingredients.

The reason many of us want the natural way is to try and avoid the side effects from chemicals and drugs that mainstream medicine use, and the cost saving is a great bonus.

Onions and garlic may also help to cover up hair loss and balding, by giving the remaining hair a much better appearance.

How do Onions and Garlic help cure and prevent hair loss and balding?

So you can see how garlic and onions may help cure someones baldness and hair loss, as they attack the hair loss from so many different angles.

Garlic as a home remedy / treatment for hair loss and baldness

Garlic, as well as being good for our body, can be really good for our scalp and hair.

Garlic can stimulate the flow of blood to the scalp, thereby nourishing the hair, and thus encouraging hair to grow and strengthen, rather than falling out, breaking off, and leaving us bald or balding.

Garlic can also help remove any harmful toxins, which is an important consideration in caring for the growth of our hair and in helping to prevent hair loss.

Garlic is also good at adding body to hair, as well as giving hair a nice gloss, both of which help to couteract the appearance of balding and hair loss, by giving the illusion of a fuller head of healthy hair.

If you have dry hair or maybe an itchy scalp, a garlic extract type of shampoo will give you relief from many of those nasty symptoms, which is a nice bonus to this garlic hair loss and balding remedy.

So how do you use garlic in the battle against hair loss and baldness?

60 minutes before you go to sleep, crush up a garlic clove and then rub the clove into the area of hair loss. It is important that the juice of the clove is smeared over the area fully and firmly.

Do NOT rub the the crushed clove too hard against the scalp, or you may cause traction alopecia – baldness caused by pulling on hair.

Leave for 60 minutes and then apply olive oil, gently rubbing the olive oil into the scalp.

For sleeping, you will need to wear a shower cap or something similar.

When you awake the next day, the first thing you should do is shampoo your hair.

(Adding a garlic extract to shampoo can also help to further strengthen hair and stop any breakage, while, at the same time, it can add good body to the hair and a nice gloss).

This hairloss and baldness remedy will work best if you can do this for a few weeks.

Hopefully, the hair will no longer be falling out and may start to re-grow.

The onion as an anti-bald, anti-hairloss treatment

The onion is blessed with healing qualities.

Onions are also antibacterial, can be used for cleansing, improving circulation, and have the power of nourishment, all of which can be good for helping to heal baldness and hair loss – Characteristics similar to garlic’s, which are beneficial in correcting hair loss and baldness.

Onions contain a quantity of important nutrients, like vitamins C and vitamin B6. Onions also contain calcium and magnesium, along with potassium and germanium. The onion is also high in sulphur, which is a mineral contained in every single cell in the human body.

Sulphur has its highest levels in the hair, the skin and in the nails, which is why it is known as the “beauty mineral”.

Big levels of sulphur in our onions will make them really useful in regenerating the hair follicles on our scalps and promoting the regrowth of hair and hence reduction in baldness and hair thinning as it is providing the hair with an extra amount of sulfur, that can be absorbed into the scalp and hence help the hair follicles in growing hair.

As well, natural sulphur, as found in onions, has been proven to have greater hair-restoring properties than mined sulfur. Don’t know why, it’s one of those odd findings one comes across from time to time.

These qualities of onions also back up the theory that onions can boost hair growth in some of us with nutrient deficiencies. Obviously, if we provide nourishment to the scalp directly, as by applying onions, we help to stop and reverse hair loss and balding caused by DHT or bad diet, and maybe improve the strength of the hair growth as well.

Onion is also known for it’s healing powers because it promotes the circulation, thereby getting more nourishment to the hair growing areas of the scalp via the blood stream, thus helping to prevent hair loss and baldness by providing the hair follicles with more nutrients to grow the hair with.

Onions can also decrease inflammation – decrease redness and swelling – which is an extra bonus if you suffer from that on your scalp.

For a hair loss and balding remedy using any onion

Squeeze the juice out of one medium to large uncooked onion.

Apply the onion juice to the top of the scalp and massage deep into the hair roots – but again, do gently, so as not to cause traction alopecia.

You will need to leave it onto the top of the scalp for around 30 minutes and then shampoo.

By doing this onion hair loss and balding treatment everyday, you may find a great transformation of the hair on your head in several months.

Onion juice rejuvinates hair follicles and boosts the scalp circulation, so it should likely help the re-growth of strong hair.

You may have heard of garlic for heart health and cholesterol, but have you heard of garlic for hair loss ? If not, you may be missing out on a very safe, natural and effective solution for your shedding and hair loss worries.

Why does it work?
Garlic contains allicin, a natural substance that can improve blood flow to the scalp, get rid of any bacteria or fungi living on the scalp and hair, and give life to damaged follicles. Many times, hair loss can be due to unknown bacteria or fungi present on the scalp and garlic can kill those bacteria, which stops them from wreaking havoc on your hair. By increasing blood flow to the scalp, lifeless, damaged hair is rejuvenated by garlic and it’s active ingredient, allicin.

How should you use it?
To use garlic as a hair loss/shedding remedy, can use it one of 3 ways:

Garlic Infused Oil
To use garlic infused oil on your scalp you will need a few garlic cloves and an oil your choice. Olive oil is a good option. Peel a few cloves (4 or five) and slice them. Next, simmer them in the oil on a stove for 15-20 minutes. Be sure to add enough oil to cover the cloves and to have some oil to use later (at least a cup of oil) If the garlic starts to brown or burn during the process, remove it from heat and reduce the cooking temperature, then continue simmering. After the oil has cooled, apply it directly to your scalp and let it sit for at least 15 minutes. Rinse the garlic oil and proceed with washing/conditioning your hair as usual.

Direct Scalp Treatment
For a more direct treatment, crush a garlic clove , then apply it directly to your scalp by gently rubbing it the area where you need it. Let it sit for 60 minutes. After that, apply an oil of your choice to your scalp and massage it in. Cover your head with a plastic cap and go to sleep. In the morning, wash and condition your hair; then proceed with styling as usual.

Garlic Shampoo and Conditioner
There are specially formulated shampoos and conditioners that contain garlic. You can buy them, or make your own. To make your own garlic additive for shampoo or conditioner, crush up a clove with a press or a mortar and pestle, then mix it with the amount of shampoo or conditioner you intend to use. Be sure to give your scalp a good massage as you work the product through your hair, then rinse.
