How to tell if he really loves you

“I’m so afraid of losing something I love, that I refuse to love anything.” – Jonathan Safran Foer

Love can make you feel like you are invincible. Every clichéd love song suddenly rings true with a new meaning. Food tastes better, sunsets are prettier. You’re so full of sweetness that you’re tempted to lavish it on strangers just because you want to spread that blissful feeling. It’s the same for men as it is for women, we also love being in love!

Where there is a potential for great reward, there tends to also be a great risk. Love is probably the best and the scariest thing we do. That potential for rejection and devastation can make it really challenging to truly let yourself fall for someone.

Saying the phrase “I love you” is just that – a phrase. They are beautiful words, but they don’t create a binding contract. Hearing those words is not always enough to make you rest easy in your relationship. And some guys just might not be so comfortable saying them, even if it’s how he feels. Other guys may be too comfortable saying those words, even when they aren’t quite in that state.

Words are just words. There’s more to the story, which is why it’s important to know how guys behave and what they do when they truly love a woman.

Listen, if he makes your bed in the morning, I’m just saying.

How to tell if he really loves you

Unless you possess the ability to read people’s minds (…in which case, let’s talk), there’s unfortunately no way to ever fully know how someone feels about you. This can be v upsetting if you’re dating someone who feels more comfortable talking about why Matthew McConaughey is the greatest actor on earth than how much you mean to them. Le sigh.

But FWIW, just because your partner isn’t exactly comfortable throwing out the whole “I love you” thing just yet doesn’t mean they’re not experiencing all the feels. In fact, there’s a v high chance that they’re feeling a deep love if you notice them doing any of the below things.

16 Signs He Definitely Loves You, According to Men

1. He picks up thoughtful gifts for you. Even if he’s not the best gift-giver in the world, he buys you socks with corgis on them just because he knows you love corgis. Know what I mean? He pays attention to things you mention, or at least tries to find something you didn’t even know you needed.

2. He inadvertently does lil tasks and chores you hate. Okay, so some dudes just aren’t big on gifts—and that’s fine! It’s a love language after all. But if he’s doing your dishes, taking your trash out, making your bed in the a.m., or doing any sort of chore/necessity that you would otherwise hate doing yourself, it’s a pretty good sign he’s got the hots for you, says Alex Z., 29.

3. He tries to get into the things you like. Like, maybe he’s sat through an entire season of The Bachelor and listened to you rant about the contestants just because?“If it makes her happy, then it makes me happy,” says Francisco C., 26.

4. He is reminded of you All! The! Time! If he finds a way to make every story about you or something that you guys did together, there’s probably a good chance he’s got the feels. “When songs on the radio remind you of her or things you did together,” says Ross G., 28.

5. He finds any reason to bring you up to his friends and family. Literally any reason. “When I’m in love, that person typically comes up more often than not in conversation with my friends and family,” says Hayden K., 25. “It’s like everything you talk about reminds you of a story with them.”

6. He doesn’t get FOMO when he’s with you. If a dude has the option to go out with his bois, 90 percent of the time, he’s going to go out with his bois. But if the question is: hang out with the bois or hang out with you, and he makes plans with you instead, that is a *chefs kiss* sign. “I know when I’m not having FOMO when I’m with them,” says Matt D., 25.

7. He’s (almost) always paying attention. You can’t expect him to have a perfect memory, and yet he remembers virtually everything. It’s not just because he has a great memory. It’s because he cares enough to focus on you. He puts his phone down or pauses his movie. You’re not an afterthought. “More than anything, just being a good listener is a good sign,” says Carter M., 26.

8. He lets you know he’s thinking about you. He might not text you “I love you” but he messages you when he hears that song you had stuck in your head the other day. Or that someone at work used a turn of phrase you hate. You’re always on his mind.

9. He drops everything when you need him most. It’s not even a question. If you need him, for whatever reason, he’s there. He doesn’t drag his feet or complain about it, or remind you later that he helped you out.

10. He notices when something is wrong, even if you don’t mention it first. He knows you well enough to know when you’re not in a great mood, even if you won’t admit it. But also, you should just admit it, since he knows anyway.

How to tell if he really loves you

11. He puts his hand around your waist and gives it a little squeeze at just the right moments. He knows just when you need a little bit of affection.

12. He leans on you for support. You’re his go-to. You keep his head on straight. He texts or calls you when he feels like walking out of work, or skipping a day at the gym. He trusts you more than anyone.

13. He supports your dreams. He’s not about to let you quit your job so you can move to Spain and try your hand at bullfighting out of the blue, but he absolutely would help you open your own restaurant, or go back to school to major as an engineer. Or… if it made personal sense to you, become a bullfighter.

14. He doesn’t hold a grudge. Sure you might argue, but he isn’t constantly mad at you. Communication is an important part of relationships, and you know that while things might not always be easy, you’re ultimately both willing to put in the effort to fix things.

15. He brags about you. Sometimes you feel like he’s more proud of your new work promotion than you are.

16. You catch him staring at you and smiling to himself. If you’ve ever witnessed that, it’s safe to say he’s crazy about you.

There is no guaranteed way to know if a person truly loves you, but there are a few signs to read in order to figure out what is on the mind of your loved one. If you would like to know if the person you love truly loves you back, then you have to pay attention on how the person acts, what they say, and what they do when you are together. Though love may mean something different [1] X Research source to every person, there are many ways to tell if a person truly loves you, just has a crush on you or just being momentarily infatuated with you.

These signs provide clues to their true feelings.

Key points

  • John Gottman’s behavioral approach challenges couples to watch each other’s actions to determine the health of the relationship.
  • One theory suggests that wanting to invest time in the relationship is a key indicator of successful long-term intimacy.
  • Other indications that someone loves their partner include giving affection, showing respect, and including them in decisions.

How to tell if he really loves you

Most theories of relationships focus on how intimate partners feel about each other, but according to John Gottman’s behavioral approach, you need to focus on outward signs to test the health of yours. This approach follows from the assumption that observable actions provide, in many cases, harder evidence about what’s going on inside a person than the inferences we make from what he or she says.

I’ve taken the liberty of translating Gottman’s theory, along with information from other supporting psychological research, into 11 clues you can use in your own daily life to gauge the depth of your lover’s feelings:

  1. Wants to spend time with you. Wanting to invest time in your relationship is a key indicator of successful long-term intimacy, according to one recent theory. Although both of you may be tied up with work, family, and other commitments, someone who truly cares about you will use whatever time is left over to have some time together alone.
  2. Asks about your day. During that time you spend together, does your partner ask about, and show interest in, the high and low points of your workday? Couples build their love for each other not necessarily on the ethereal, but on the practical supports that keep communication routes open.
  3. Trusts you. Partners who truly care about you will give you the benefit of the doubt. Research shows that in successful long-term relationships, partners want to have a sense of knowing where their mates are at any given time. However, they don’t have this wish because of worry that their partners might be up to something nefarious. A partner who doesn’t question where you are if you come home late or doesn’t snoop through your cell phone bills is showing the kind of trust that indicates true caring.
  4. Helps you when you need it. As busy as we all get, adding extra chores or duties to your day may be the last thing you feel like doing. However, if your partner is a technophobe, and you’re techno-savvy, you’ll help out when something goes wrong with your home Wi-Fi network. Similarly, if you absolutely need something from the drugstore and are too sick to go there yourself, a partner who cares about you will run a rescue mission and get you that cold medicine.
  5. Shows respect for your views. If recent research on complementarity in relationships is true, it’s possible for you and your partner to be on completely opposite poles of the political spectrum and still remain happy together for years. The key feature is not what your beliefs are, though, but how open you can be to accepting your partner’s perspective as valid. Let’s say you’re an ardent feminist and your partner holds pre-1970s views about women. If he truly cares about you, he’ll at least listen to you when you express concern about women’s status in the workplace.
  6. Includes you in decisions. Couples decide on everything from mundane chores to high-stakes questions of where (and how) to invest their income. It’s fine and probably advisable for each person to specialize in some tasks needed to keep the household going, but at some point you need to feel that your views will still be sought (and heard).
  7. Shows affection. Couples don’t have to engage in frequent sex, or even any sex at all, to be emotionally intimate. However, showing some sign of physical closeness, even if it’s resting a hand on your shoulder, suggests that your partner feels a vital connection to you.
  8. Looks at you. The nonverbal cues that partners share with each other reveal their deeper feelings. If your partner looks at you while you’re talking, or if you catch him or her darting a glance your way, this suggests that he or she takes pleasure in being with you. The two of you don’t need to spend hours gazing into each other’s eyes; even a quick glance can be enough to send positive, love-confirming vibes.
  9. Likes to talk about the past. Couples who spend time reliving their enjoyable moments from the past, and do so in a positive and supportive way, can strengthen their ties in the present and future. If your partner uses phrases such as “Remember the time we…?” and then proceeds to tell a great story from your past (which you might not even recall), it suggests that you and your shared experiences play an important role in your partner’s mind.
  10. Is willing to go to bat for you and your relationship. Does your partner defend you when someone else criticizes you or does he or she join in the fray? We certainly know from great literature that people who truly care about each other will risk their own well-being for the other’s welfare. Partners in more ordinary relationships can still show their love for each other by bonding together against outside attacks. In a study of lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals in close relationships, San Francisco State sexuality researcher David Frost found that many who felt stigmatized because of their relationships drew strength from each other and felt that they bonded more closely in the face of adversity.
  11. Makes you feel good about yourself. A partner who truly cares about you boosts your self-esteem and sense of identity. If nothing else, being with someone who makes you feel valued provides you with strong positive reinforcement. We want to be with people who make us feel good. This doesn’t mean that you’ll always have wonderful days and nights in which you never quibble or become frustrated and annoyed with each other. However, overall, if you feel that your partner boosts your self-confidence, you’ll not only be more likely to want to spend time together, but you’ll also regard yourself more positively at the times when you’re apart.

How to tell if he really loves you

There’s no set number of these 11 that would indicate whether a specific partner hits above or below the threshold for truly loving you. However, with these signs as a guide, you can gain insight into your relationship’s strengths and weaknesses and from there, address the areas of weakness. At the same time, if you want your partner to feel truly loved, ask yourself honestly how you would rate on these 11 indicators. Perhaps it’s time for you not only to count the ways that you’re loved, but the ways that you show your love.

How to tell if he really loves you

As a love and dating writer, people ask me a lot of questions. They are usually things like, “How do I get a dead hamster out of my [insert random orifice here]?” and “Where are my keys?” (That second one comes almost exclusively from my boyfriend and, thus, does not count.)

Another big question that often comes my way, particularly from single women looking to meet a man they like enough to be with him exclusively(in what human beings like to call “a relationship”), is how to know if a guy is playing you or really likes you and wants something serious.

I hate using the term “player” because I think it reduces the complex subject of love to little more than a game.

That said, there men and women out there who prefer to amass countless sexual romantic partners the way tech nerds collect keyboards, and it is understandably upsetting to discover this is true about someone you hoped might be a prospective long-term mate.

And while it’s easy to tell if the guy you’re casually dating has too many actual keyboards, it can be far more difficult to determine whether or not he’s feeling things as deeply as you’d like him to.

There’s no list of particular behaviors that every single man who is less than genuine about his intentions always does, which is, frankly, the reason so many of them are so successful at leaving women feeling confused about what’s going down.

So, I decided to consult with some men I know who most definitely play mind games — including one who played me — to ask them what it is that makes them so skilled keeping women unclear about what it is they really want.

Indeed, I learned at least 4 signs to look for when you’re not sure if it’s serious and keep wondering how to tell when a guy likes you.

1. If he seems too good to be true, he may be playing you.

“For me, it’s about showering her with attention, with gifts, with constant eye contact. I want to make sure she feels like she’s the most special, most important person in the world. Once I’ve got that locked up, it takes a lot of bad behavior for her to even doubt me.”

At the beginning of a relationship, it’s normal to flirt and coo and say cheesy things to each other, but guys who play games take this noise to the extreme.

They send flowers to your house the day after meeting you. They send you letters via old-school snail mail. They tell you they feel something they’ve never felt before with you, and that they’re excited to see where it takes you both.

These guys probably even mean it (a little)! But, aside from in some rare yet adorably cute instances, if a guy is coming on so strongly, if he’s sweeping you off your feet so hard that you’re looking around for the hidden cameras, then there’s a solid chance he’s a player.

Romantic gestures are insanely sweet, of course, but a relationship, a real and lasting one, it can’t be built on them alone.

2. If he’s playing games with you, he may be avoiding real intimacy with you.

“It is amazing what not answering a woman’s texts for a little while will do.”

You know all those stupid “rules” that come along with dating? Like, don’t text too much, wait a specified number of days to call him back, don’t be the first person to say I love you, don’t let him see you sweat, always be the person who the other person likes more. All that terrible bilge?

Those, my friend, are “rules,” and you know what has rules? Games.

A man who relishes following the rules isn’t a hot rebel, he’s a Poindexter who values the thrill of the chase over the thrill of making a real connection with someone as bomb as you are, Bambino! (I don’t know why I called you all bambinos, but I kind of love it, so it’s staying in.)

3. If he’s avoiding real intimacy with you, he may not want to get serious with anybody.

“I don’t think I even knew I was a player until I started to get serious with one girl. The idea of not having sex with anyone else felt like death. The closer we got, the more people I hooked up with just because I was bugging out.”

There’s nothing wrong with having casual sex, provided you are being safe, healthy and honest about it. However, if the man you’re into is doing it because he’s trying to sabotage what they two of you could have, then he isn’t someone with the maturity to handle a real relationship.

There are, of course, plenty of relationships where the people in them agree to have sex with others, but the operative word there is “agree”.

Subscribe to our newsletter.

If he’s using sex as a weapon, or as an escape, it’s because he can’t handle the kind of intimacy that a sustained relationship requires. Your vagina is not a game of Battleship. He doesn’t get to take blind shots at blowing up other women’s phones just to keep you in line. If he’s sexually incontinent, he’s not the one.

4. If he says he doesn’t want anything serious right now, he’s not serious about you.

“It’s situational. I don’t identify as a player but I have no plans to date anyone exclusively. The way I see it, I am upfront with the women I meet online about what I want, and I’m upfront with the women I meet at bars about what I want.

If a woman thinks we’re in a relationship just because I enjoy having sex with her, that isn’t because I tricked her. It’s because she’s refusing to get the memo.”

It’s often hard to believe a man who says he doesn’t want a commitment and that he’s just looking for sex.

I don’t think this is because we women are stupid or naive. I think it’s because when a man is confident and honest enough to say exactly what he wants, it’s a major turn-on, and we’re willing to delude ourselves in any number of ways just to make it “okay” to sleep with him.

When a man tells you that he’s not (at least, currently) monogamous or that he likes you a lot and loves having sex with you, but that he doesn’t want to settle down, he’s not being a jerk, he’s being honest and he’s telling you upfront exactly what he’s all about.

The key to identifying whether or not a man is serious about you really comes down to a matter of communication.

Listen to what he has to say, and remember that there’s nothing wrong with having some dirty, hot sex with a guy who isn’t boyfriend material if you want to. Just make sure you know that’s the case before either of you go there.

When it comes to simple love, you really don’t know what to expect. One day he can love you with his whole heart but one day he might simply leave you in the dirts.

But, when he is head over heels in love with you, if he loves you he will come back no matter what? Here is the answer to the question that puzzles all the lovers in the world:

How To Make Him Never Leave You

You already have a clear idea on the answer to “if he loves you he will come back no matter what ? “. Despite the answer, here is how you can make him stay with you no matter how much love he have for you in his heart:

1. Know For Sure How You Feel About Him

Do you know whether you love him or just like him because he gives some attention to you? It’s time to figure this out to make all your acts of love sincere and touching.

2. Don’t Hold Back On Your Love

If you’ve decided that you lobe him, show him by doing the Things to Say to Your Boyfriend to Make Him Love You Even More.

3. Try To Understand Him And Get To Know Him

There’s nothing that will make a guy fall in love more than taking the time to get to know him.

Now that there is some certainty to answer the question of if he loves you he will come back no matter what, all you need to do is all the ways to make him stay. Then, the relationship will have a smooth sailing from then on.

I’ll never forget those months leading up to the day my now husband, Joe, said “I love you.” I had known for months that he did, and I knew that I loved him, too. But the importance of those words kept us from actually saying it for almost a year of dating. Holding hands in the car or saying our goodbyes at the end of the night he would preemptively whisper, “I miss you” and I knew what he meant. Even though he was standing right in front of me, I missed him, too.

The truth is, even though I was anxious to hear him say the actual words, he was dropping enough hints to make me feel confident that our feeling were mutual.

01. He starts performing little acts of service.

In my experience, and from what I know about a lot of men, it’s often easier for them to express their feelings through little gestures and acts of service. Even though “I love you” had yet to be spoken, the way Joe would happily wake up early to take me to the train station, make sure my car passed its inspection, and fussed over me when I was sick was a sign that his heart was true. If you are wondering what your man’s true feelings are, look at the way he serves you. Service is always the fruit of authentic love.

02. He starts getting vulnerable.

Vulnerability can be difficult for anyone, but men often struggle with this aspect of romantic relationships especially. In the early stages of romance the focus is often put on looking good and impressing you. But when you love someone, you want to open your heart to them, even if that means exposing your weaknesses and your wounds. When Joe would tell me about his day (I mean really tell me about his day) and when he felt safe telling me about some of the things he was most insecure about, I knew he was telling me his heart was safe with me.

03. He starts making long-term plans.

When a guy starts talking about “next summer. ” or “someday. ” there is more to those longterm plans than meets the eye. Love is a rare thing, so when you find it you don’t want to let it go. Often men pick up on this before they even internalize the fact that it’s love. They feel like this could be “it,” and they start making plans with you to make sure you don’t go anywhere.

04. He would happily take you anywhere.

In the beginning, a lot of men make a big deal about boundaries. Things like guys’ nights and alone time matter—and it’s good for the relationship to respect those boundaries. When we were dating, before we actually said “I love you”, Joe still really enjoyed nights with the boys and still needed some “laundry nights” (as he would call them), but I knew things were getting serious when those days apart became fewer and farther between. More often than not he would rather have me join him with friends, with his family, even hang out with him on nights he did laundry! The thing is, when it comes to love, typically, you just can’t get enough and so that’s how you know.

05. He is willing to correct you, Mr. Knightly Style (badly done, Emma, badly done!).

It may seem contrary to how you expect love to feel, but when your guy puts his desire to please you aside and makes the decision to correct you, that’s when you know he is really in love. I’ll never forget the time Joe first corrected me. I wasn’t being kind toward someone; I knew it was wrong, but I never imagined that he would say something. He was embarrassed, and I was embarrassed. If Joe were the kind of guy who often corrected me, or did so in a mean or belittling way, this may have been a red flag. But he didn’t relish the moment at all, and that’s how I knew he must really love me. I mean, think about it: What could possibly be in it for him to tell me I had been unkind? I’m sure he knew I would respond defensively, and that’s why it was super heroic. So sure, look for moments he sweeps you off your feet, but don’t dismiss the times he lovingly calls you back to reality. Those uncomfortable moments are when he is showing you that he wants to grow with you, too.

When it comes to simple love, you really don’t know what to expect. One day he can love you with his whole heart but one day he might simply leave you in the dirts.
