The simplest way to reduce your alcohol consumption is to gradually reduce the number of drinks you usually drink over a period of time. For example, if you usually drink five glasses of wine a day, try limiting it to four glasses for a few days and then try reducing it to three.

Some people limit themselves by taking breaks between drinks. For example, they may be limited to one drink per hour. Or, they can substitute a glass of water, juice, or Gatorade between each alcoholic drink. Some limit themselves by mixing weaker drinks with less alcohol.

Others try to leave by swapping their favorite alcoholic drink for one they don’t like. For example, they may try switching from a drink they like (like wine) to one they don’t like (like beer). The logic is that they are less likely to drink the amount of a drink they don’t like.

If you plan to cut back on alcohol to stop drinking, be sure to limit your intake consistently, avoid fluctuations, and follow a weekly reduction schedule with an agreed end date. Convergence is not an open process.

Challenges related to reducing alcohol consumption

For some drinkers, limiting the amount of alcohol they drink doesn’t work. They may limit themselves for a short time, but soon return to their usual consumption levels. This is especially true for heavy drinkers who are surrounded by triggers to encourage alcohol consumption and lack the support needed to encourage change.

Those who feel they will not be able to cut down on their drinks for a long period of time have probably suffered from severe alcohol use disorders or have become alcoholics. For others, simply reducing the number of drinks can trigger alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

For comparison only, 12 ounces of regular strength beer (5%) is a standard drink. A standard bottle of wine (750 ml) with an alcohol content of 12% contains 5 standard drinks. The 750ml bottle containing 80 spirits contains 17 standard drinks. One liter of 80% alcohol equals 23 standard drinks.

If you have had 20 or more standard drinks per day, we recommend having one beer per hour, starting with waking up in the morning, for a total of 16 beers on the first day. On the second day, drink a beer every hour and a half, ten beers in total. Then keep reducing, reducing the quantities of two beers a day until you get to zero.

If your BASE ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION is less than 20 drinks per day, we recommend that you reduce your consumption to two standard drinks per day.
