While an accidental cheek bite is not a cause for concern, some people may bite the inner cheek more than they realize. This could be a sign of a more serious problem. But don’t worry, whether it’s a coincidence or something more, we’re here to help you stop biting your cheek.

Why is the cheek bitten?

Many things can bite the inside of your cheek. They include:

No attention. Distraction while engaging in activities such as reading a book or watching TV during meals can cause you to bite your cheek without realizing it.

An accidental bite. People can bite their cheek when they eat too quickly, chatter while eating, or get into a fight or accident.

Biting that is related to depression or anxiety. Just like biting your nails, you can automatically bite your inner cheek in response to stress, anxiety, or depression.

Tooth deflection in the dental arch. Your teeth (usually wisdom teeth) that lean towards your cheek can cause damage. Crooked or poorly designed or constructed molars or premolars crownscan cause similar changes.

Biting related to the psyche. Chronic cheek biting (known as morsicatio buccarum) is a compulsive behavior that repeatedly causes someone to bite the inside of the cheek. It is classified as body-focused repetitive behavior (BFRB). In some cases, a person with a BFRB may not even be aware that they are biting their cheek.

Cheek bite damage

Occasional accidental bites on the cheeks can causecancerous ulcersbut otherwise they are not a cause for too much concern. You may experience some discomfort for a few days, but it usually is.

Chronic biting of the cheeks can cause redness, painful sores, and tears in the inner lining of the mouth (known as the mucous membrane). You may also feel more guilt, shame, or despair when you bite your cheek in connection with BFRB, or avoid social activity for fear that others will notice you bite.

How do I stop biting my cheeks?

If you chew the inside of your mouth frequently while chewing or talking, this is a great time to make an appointment with your dentist. If your wisdom or another tooth is causing changes in your cheek, your dentist may recommend braces or extractions to properly align your teeth.

If cheek biting is related to stress, it may be a good idea to talk to your doctor or psychologist about it. Breathing or relaxation exercises can provide relief and be an effective way to prevent inner cheek bites.

If the inner cheek bite is associated with a BFRD, treatment is complex. Your psychologist may advise you to keep track of your behavior by keeping a journal of when a cheek bite occurs and what triggered it. One way to change your behavior is to replace it with a healthier one. For example, chewing gum. And don’t forget that it’s just as important to get emotional support and find ways to understand the emotions that drive this behavior. A psychologist can be a great source of information here.

Let’s talk about biting your cheeks today.

This phrase will make some people say “huh?” while others say yes, let’s go. The reason is that cheek biting is basically a bit like biting your nails. Some of us do it as a bad habit and some of us don’t. And of course, both sides don’t really understand the other (the part that doesn’t say “hey, stop now”, while the part that does know it’s not that simple).

But yes, there are pillows. And when I say “cheek chew” I mean the entire inside of the mouth: the cheek, the lips and even the tongue. It just sounds better to say “cheek”.

As a cosmetic dentist in New York, I see a lot of bites on my cheeks. Some cases are only accidental, some are chronic but have easily correctable medical causes and some are physiological in nature. Let’s discuss some reasons / causes:

The first cause of cheek bites is what I call “careless chewing”. This is something we probably all do from time to time. This is when you chew and usually try to do something else – talk, take something, read, etc. Talking is indeed the biggest culprit here (I don’t know if I don’t warn people to read while they eat – my newspaper is tapped at lunchtime). It can perhaps be remedied by paying a little more attention to chewing, slowing down when eating and the like.

But again, it’s something we probably all do. So the occasional cheek / lip bite is usually not a cause for concern.

Chronic cheek biting is more problematic, usually due to some kind of misalignment of the teeth or possibly due to TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder). This is quite common with some people: irregular teeth make our bite “out” and can sometimes pinch the cheek / tongue / lips.

This can happen with permanent teeth (misaligned due to missing teeth, etc.) or with misaligned false teeth. Irregular teeth don’t just cause accidental pinching. In some people, uneven teeth can cause psychological addiction in the form of cheek biting. This is where chronic cheek biting begins.

When your teeth are misaligned, they don’t close properly. Our brains are aware of this and sometimes try to “correct” this misalignment by putting something in the middle. What can you put there? You guessed it: the inside of your cheek / lips. So if you keep putting your cheek / mouth between your teeth, misalignment could be the cause.

The last reason people bite their cheeks is because of a simple nervous habit, similar to biting their nails. The main cause could be uneven alignment of the teeth or dentures, but cheek biting out of “nervous habit” can be common even in a perfect mouth.

So now that we know the causes, let’s talk about how harmful it is to bite your cheeks.

The first and most obvious “bad thing” is the simple fact that cheek biting often causes pain and mouth ulcers are never fun. Now again, if it’s a twice-a-year affair it might not be worth worrying about, but if you have constant “bite-related” sores in your mouth, it’s something you’ll probably want to take care of, if nothing else, for the your convenience (and you don’t want them to get infected, etc.).

Of course, following what I have outlined, the simplest solutions are to pay more attention to chewing and, in many cases, to correct the misalignment of the bite. In fact, these two are likely to eliminate cheek biting in the vast majority of people.

In the case of a chronic “nervous habit” of cheek biting, the solution may require some sort of substitute or “training” to overcome this habit. For example, sugar-free chewing gum can help. Or, if you bite your lip, maybe a lip gloss / conditioner that at least makes you “realize” what you’re doing.

After all, cheek biting is something that almost everyone will experience from time to time, and with a little effort it can be corrected quite easily.

I just can’t stop. It’s always subconscious and once I start I have to keep going because when you start chewing it makes the inside of your cheek stop feeling smooth and you have to chew it to get it smooth again.

I’ve been doing this for years. It causes problems like the ATM. Now my jaw clicks a lot because I I have to strain my jaw to chew the cheek meat which is just past the place where my lower and upper lips meat. This neighborhood has the most delicious meat. But I know I shouldn’t chew there.

What is cheek biting?

Cheek biting is a self-injurious habit that can be engaged in accidentally or intentionally and is considered a mental health disorder if it affects quality of life or causes severe injury or stress.

‘Cheek biting is relatively common especially in urban cities, such as London, where stress levels tend to be higher,’ says Dr Marques. ‘However, severe cheek biting and habitual cheek biting are more rare.’

The reasons for biting your cheek

Common triggers are stress, anxiety, and boredom. Previous research also suggests that body-centered repetitive behaviors like this often begin in late childhood and can continue throughout adulthood.

‘Sometimes it happens when people are grinding their teeth or eating,’ says Dr Marques. ‘Other times people chew their cheeks as a habit. Cheek bites are usually visible as lesions that look like white spots on the inside of the cheeks, which correspond to the area where the teeth meet. It can also affect the lips and tongue, although the cheeks are the most common.’

Cheek bites vary in severity, from one-off to deep and painful self-mutilation. The main consequence of repeated biting of the inside of the cheek is damage to the oral tissue, which can lead to mouth ulcers and ulcers.

Identify your triggers

Are you chewing when a deadline or presentation approaches? Once you know what turns you on, you may find something other than chew, with chewing gum being the obvious choice.

Use a lip balm

Likewise, if it’s a lip-biting problem, applying a lip gloss or balm to your lips can help hold you back, or at least make you aware of what you’re doing.


Reduce stress levels and provide alternative, healthy solutions to anxiety, such as regular exercise and meditation.

Are you biting your mouth? If so, and you are on a detention mission, you are in the right place. In fact, there are two very different reasons people bite their lips. First, dry, cracked skin can be annoying, so if your lips aren’t as soft as a pillow, you may be prone to chewing on cracked skin. “If your lips are dry, we’re likely to lick them more often and maybe pull at them, but this can make our lips drier and more irritated,” says Victoria Schofield, Dermalogica’s Digital Education Executive. So far all obvious. It’s kind of like you want to pick a pimple once you know it’s there, or pick unruly hair with tweezers. The second reason is anxiety. Yep, if you’re feeling stressed or out of sorts, then you could find your bite your lips reaching new heights of regularity. Schofield explains that our lips are related to the stomach and colon in Chinese face reading. “Many of us will unconsciously chew or pull at our lips when we’re stressed or anxious,” she says. “Think about how these emotions relate to that feeling of sickness or the butterflies in the stomach.”

Dott. Anita Sturnham, a GP specializing in dermatology and founder of Decree, agrees that bite your lips can be linked to stress, anxiety, and even boredom but goes onto reveal that “it can also be part of a bigger spectrum of conditions called Body-Focussed Repetitive Behaviors [that] typically begins in childhood and can extend into adulthood. It can vary in severity from one-off occurrences [to more consistent bite your lips]. If done repeatedly, it can cause injury to the lip tissue, with short term issues such as pain, ulcers, infection, and longer-term implications of scarring and an increased risk of oral cancers.”

“The key to solving this problem is identifying the triggers,” says Sturnham. “If you find [biting your mouth] while sitting at your computer trying to do important work, change your attitude and find something harmless to chew on. The obvious choice may be sugar-free gum. Distraction therapy can work very well.

“If stress is a trigger, look for ways to reduce stress levels,” advises Sturnham. “Exercise and meditation can be a huge help. If these measures don’t work, you may want to try Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, while more severe cases of bite your lips may warrant a medical review.”
