How to stop an air fryer

If you didn’t know the air fryer could bake, I’m about to blow your mind. You can make everything from fried Oreos to donuts and even churros!

If you like dessert or any sweets, these desserts in the air fryer are exactly what you need.

I’ve curated a list of more than 20 air fryer desserts to put together to enjoy after dinner or for a special treat.

Things to Know When Making Air Fryer Desserts

  • You can use anything that’s oven-safe in your air fryer! That means silicone cupcake cups, small round cake pans, ramekins, etc. can all be used in your air fryer.
  • You cannot just take an oven recipe and use it for the air fryer. Most recipes should be lowered by 25 to 50 degrees and account for a faster cook time.
  • Wet-battered desserts are not the best for an air fryer. Using something with a little more solid outside will work the best (see air fried Oreos below for an example).
  • When cooking something with a softer batter, like cookies, use a parchment paper round. This helps stop the cookies from forming into the holes on the basket or mesh tray.

I love using my air fryer for cooking beef sausages until they are perfectly delicious. It is much easier and healthier than cooking them in a frying pan.

How to stop an air fryer

The air fryer is great for cooking beef sausages as you do not require much oil to cook them. Once they are ready to eat, the skin will be crispy, and the insides deliciously tender. However, the result can vary heavily based on the quality of the sausages.

We are using beef sausages in this recipe, but you can easily use a different type of sausage if you want. For example, pork, lamb, or chicken sausages will cook perfectly in the air fryer. We have even tried cooking hot dogs in the air fryer and have them turn out great.

How to stop an air fryer

Depending on people’s appetites, you should get roughly three to six servings out of this recipe. If you need to feed more people, simply add more sausages to the air fryer. However, you want to be careful about overloading the air fryer basket, as too many sausages will lead to inconsistent cooking. Try air frying in batches if possible.

Serving Ideas for Beef Sausages

One of the best ways to serve sausages is with a delicious gravy. There are a huge number of different gravies that you can make. A few types of gravy that I highly recommend giving a try are mushroom gravy, pepper gravy, onion gravy, or creamy gravy.

Sausages always go great with a potato side dish. I love to stick to potato fries, sweet potato fries, or even hash browns. However, other potato side dishes, such as scalloped potatoes, will work fantastically well.

How to stop an air fryer

Other side dishes such as creamy spinach or cauliflower cheese are the perfect match for these sausages. You can also try healthier options such as garlic mushrooms, blanched greens, or a simple salad. There are loads of different side dishes to try.

If you somehow have leftover sausages or want a larger meal, you can always make a sausage casserole or curried sausages. Both meals are pretty easy to make and will easily feed a crowd.

The recipe below will take you through the few easy steps to cooking beef sausages in the air fryer. If you decide to try our recipe, please let us know how you go by leaving a comment at the bottom of the page.

How to stop an air fryer

If you’re thinking about buying an air fryer, you might be wondering what the difference is between air fryers and convection ovens. The quick answer is, an air fryer is a simply a smaller convection oven with a catchy name.

There is no actual frying going on inside an air fryer—that’s because an air fryer cooks food via convection baking.

With actual deep-frying, your food is directly immersed in hot oil. The oil completely surrounds every inch of the food, so it gets uniformly crispy. With ordinary baking, your food gets less crispy, because baking cooks by surrounding your food with hot air and air is not as good a conductor of heat as oil.

How to stop an air fryer

What Is Convection Baking?

Convection baking introduces a fan to the interior of an oven, allowing hot air to be blown around and onto the food. The force of the air thus transfers more heat to the surface of the food, so that it produces more crispiness than an ordinary oven (but still far less than an actual deep-fryer).

So air fryers are, in essence, convection ovens. But that doesn’t mean the two are exactly the same. Let’s talk about what those differences are.

Note that although many oven ranges offer a convection setting, for this discussion, we're solely comparing countertop convection ovens with air fryers.

What Is a Convection Oven?

A countertop convection oven is built like a standard toaster oven: rectangular in shape with a front door that opens on a hinge at the bottom. How it differs from an ordinary toaster oven is that a convection oven is equipped with a fan, which blows hot air around.

The motion of the air inside the oven is called a convection effect and it results in faster cooking by transferring higher temperatures to the surface of the food as compared with an ordinary oven. So it both accelerates cooking as well as enhances the browning and crisping of the surface of your food.

Like a toaster oven, a convection oven has an interior rack that will fit a sheet pan (preferably a perforated one to allow maximum air flow). Because it's wide, it allows for the food to be spread out on the rack rather than stacked in layers.

This is crucial, since stacking or layering food impedes the flow of hot air. Arranging the food in a single layer allows for even cooking all around.

How to stop an air fryer

What Is an Air Fryer?

Essentially, an air fryer is a smaller, more portable convection oven. Instead of being shaped like a toaster oven, many air fryers are tall, sort of resembling a coffeemaker. It has a removable bucket with a handle, and inside that bucket fits a removable basket. This basket is where the food goes. The bucket slides into the device, you turn it on, and it starts to cook. The fan is situated overhead, above a heating element.

Now, because it's smaller and the fan is closer to the food, an air fryer is able to focus a high amount of heat onto a relatively small cooking area. Which means that an item of food in that cooking area will cook more quickly than it would in a convection oven.

However, because it is smaller, it will only accommodate a fraction of the amount of food that a convection oven will fit. An air fryer will really only cook about two servings at a time—if that.

This means that if you are trying to feed more than one or two people, you'll have to cook in batches, so that ultimately it may take longer to serve a meal than it would using a convection oven.

This creates a sort of catch-22, since the small size of the basket prevents you from spreading out an even layer of food, so you have to stack your food instead. But by stacking your food, you prevent the hot air from flowing evenly around it, thus defeating the purpose of the convection effect.

Even when used according to the instructions, cooking French fries or onion rings in an air fryer requires you to periodically shake the basket to ensure that all the fries or rings cook evenly. So not only does it take longer to cook (because of having to cook in batches), you also have to physically do more work.

I mean, what does it NOT go well with?

Garlic butter is great on just about everything, but oh boy, it’s just fabulous on roasted potatoes!

I had roasted potatoes at my favorite steakhouse one night and they were flavored with just garlic and butter. I loved them, couldn’t stop thinking about them, and now make them at home all the time!

I also loved the wine I was drinking that night, but that is another story. 😉

When I got my air fryer, it was inevitable I would make garlic butter potatoes in it and man, these exceeded my expectations. When I say you won’t want to share, I mean it. Make these when you’re home alone. Trust me on that.

How to make garlic butter potatoes in the air fryer:

  1. Wash your baby potatoes and cut them in half
  2. Drizzle the potatoes with melted butter, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and salt. Toss it all together to combine.
  3. Cook the potatoes in the air fryer for 20 minutes. Shake the basket every 5 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle with parsley before serving.

Roasted Potato FAQ:

I would reheat them in the air fryer at 400 deg F for 5 minutes or until warm in the middle.

Nope, just toss the potatoes in butter as directed.

These air fryer potatoes will go well with just about anything. Steak, pork chops, grilled chicken, and air fryer cheeseburgers are all good options.

I’ve tested a few air fryers and my main requirement is that it’s dishwasher safe, big enough to cook in 2 or less batches for my family of four, and that it doesn’t sound like a jet engine in my kitchen. The one we use most is the OMORC six quart air fryer. Simple, budget-friendly, and we’ve been using it for over a year now.

Nothing beats a tender, juicy pork tenderloin and our Air Fryer Pork Tenderloin is the best! It just takes 20 minutes in the air fryer! We top our pork tenderloin with garlic butter!

How to stop an air fryer

We’ve all had our fair share of dry, boring pork in our lives right? I mean, I dunno about you, but dry, overcooked pork chops have happened often enough in my life that I actually thought I didn’t like pork!

Once I figured out that properly cooked pork is tender, moist, juicy, flavorful…well…it’s game on. We love pork in this house and this air fryer pork tenderloin is no different!

This pork tenderloin, though? Pure magic.

The meat is so perfectly cooked – tender and moist – and the garlic butter topping is absolute perfection.

Ingredient Notes:

Pork tenderloin – Take care not to accidentally buy pork loin, this is a common mistake. That is a different cut of meat and not what this recipe is intended for. The package will spell out the entire phrase “tenderloin” on it.

Seasoning – We’re using Italian seasoning on the pork as well as making a simple garlic butter to drizzle on after cooking!

Cook the pork – Place the pork in your air fryer and cook for 20 minutes flipping halfway through. Using a meat thermometer, verify the internal temp of the pork is over 145 degrees and remove. Cook longer if necessary!

Make the garlic butter– Stir together melted butter, garlic, onion powder, and parsley. Then pour this garlic butter mixture over the pork.

How to stop an air fryer

The pork tenderloin is a long, narrow, boneless cut of pork from the backbone. A pork loin is wider and flatter and can come bone in or boneless. Pork tenderloin is more tender than pork loin.

Pork tenderloin is a lean cut of meat and no fat should need removed from the meat before cooking.

In a 375 degree oven, it will take between 30 and 40 minutes to cook a pork tenderloin. In a 375 degree air fryer, it only takes about 20 minutes to cook.

For the best flavor and texture, pork tenderloin should be cooked to between 145 and 150 degrees. This will leave just a bit of pink in the center. Tough, dry pork comes from overcooking and we recommend cooking to 145 degrees, followed by a 5 minute rest.

Air fryers produce crispy, mouth-watering results by circulating hot air around food at high speeds, harnessing innovative air fryer technology to ensure perfect frying with barely any oil. This makes the food super-crispy on the outside using little or no oil (versus a traditional deep fat fryer that submerges food in 1-2 litres of oil).

Is it easy to learn how to use an air fryer?

When it comes to instructions, these couldn’t be simpler: just add your ingredients, close the lid, and set the digital timer. The air fryer does the rest, so you can enjoy delicious foods, fried to perfection, with bags of flavour – and all with the benefits of low-fat cooking.

An air fryer uses 70-80% less oil than a traditional deep fryer. In fact, many ingredients and recipes need no oil at all. When a recipe does need oil, we recommend using the healthiest oil for frying. To cut the fat content even further, you can apply a low-cal cooking spray directly to food before placing it into your air fryer.

Are air fryers healthy?

Allowing you to enjoy all your favourite fried foods with less fat and fewer calories, an air fryer can be a great weight-loss tool. But are air-fried foods any good? After years of developing advanced air fryer technology, we’ve mastered the art: crispy, evenly-cooked results and healthier frying, all without compromising on flavour.

Air dryer vs. deep fryer: how to decide?

Air fryer or oven? Air fryer or deep fat fryer? Air fryer or halogen oven? Decisions, decisions! An air fryer gives you all the great taste, crunch, and crispiness with none of the guilt associated with deep-fried food. And, while a halogen oven works similarly, air fryers use a heating element and optimised hot air circulation combined with a stirring paddle to bring you the best of both worlds: exceptional frying texture and perfectly even results – all with less oil for healthier cooking, every day.

A delicious and easy way to prepare brats in the air fryer and still get the perfect grilled taste. Bratwurst will never be the same!

Brats are an amazing dish to enjoy in the summer with friends and family. It pairs right up there with hot dogs and hamburgers when cooking on the grill.

Turns out, they are just as tasty in the air fryer. Plus, you can cook them up whenever you want indoors from fresh or frozen!

How to stop an air fryer

I’m going to go over what exactly brats are, why you should cook bratwurst in an air fryer, how to cook them, what they can be served and topped with, and how to cook frozen brats in an air fryer.

This recipe is for raw air fryer brats. See below on how to reheat brats in the air fryer for directions on how to cook already cooked brats.

What is Bratwurst?

Bratwurst is similar to a large sausage link but is typically made with pork (but may be made with veal). It originated from Germany and is typically seasoned with ginger, nutmeg, coriander, or caraway spices.

Bratwurst can come in all sorts of flavors. Johnsonville even has cheddar and beer brat varieties. They’re absolutely delicious on a bun and can be topped with plenty of different toppings (you can read more about those below).

Why You Should Cook Brats in an Air Fryer

  • They taste just like they came off the grill.
  • You can cook them any time of year, no matter what the weather is.
  • They take just minutes to make!
  • You can toast the buns to get a nice crispy texture.

How to Cook Air Fryer Brats

It’s insanely easy to air fry brats to perfection. Just follow these cooking directions to get them to your juicy liking.

  • Preheat air fryer to 370 degrees. All air fryers are made differently, so preheating ensures food is evenly cooked correctly following this recipe.
  • Place a piece of bread underneath your air fryer basket then reattach your air fryer (read more on why below).

  • Place brats in your air fryer side by side and cook for about 8-10 minutes, turning basket halfway through.

Why Do I Need to Put a Piece of Bread Under My Air Fryer Basket?

Using a slice of bread is a neat trick when cooking fatty foods such as Air Fryer Hamburgers, Air Fryer Bacon, or these air fryer brats.

An air fryer creates a 360-motion fan when cooking. That means any grease or fat that comes out of the food, will go down under the basket holes and then fly up and hit the fan and heating coils.

It not only can create a huge mess; it can make your air fryer smoke.

How to stop an air fryer

Using a piece of bread acts like a sponge and absorbs all the fat that drips down beneath the basket. This way no fat will fly to the fan and cause smoking.

Simply place 1-2 pieces of bread underneath the basket into the air fryer drawer. You may need to push down the bread to allow your air fryer basket to sit properly inside the drawer.

This is the way I personally do when air frying fatty foods. I have never had any issues with smoking since implementing this technique.

How to Cook Frozen Brats in an Air Fryer

It happens all the time. I plan for dinner and even buy our nice sausage rolls, but then I forget to take the bratwurst out of the freezer.

There’s no need to thaw the meat before cooking (just like these air fryer hot dogs from frozen).

You just take them out of the freezer and cook!

How to stop an air fryer

Here’s how to cook air fryer frozen brats:

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 350 degrees.
  2. Place frozen brats inside the air fryer and cook for 13-15 minutes, turning halfway, until cooked internally to 160 degrees.
  3. Remove brats from the air fryer and finish the recipe as stated below!

NOTE: Raw brats typically stick together when frozen. If you know you will need to cook them straight from frozen, place the raw brats on a baking sheet with parchment paper and wrap in plastic wrap.

Let freeze for one hour then transfer to a freezer bag. This will stop them from sticking together and works great for other foods too.

How to Reheat Brats Using an Air Fryer

Since I work from home with the kids all day, reheating foods in an air fryer has become second nature to me. You can reheat everything from pizza to steak in there!

These directions will also work when using pre-cooked Johnsonville brats.

  1. Preheat air fryer to 350 degrees.
  2. Place bratwurst in the air fryer with a piece of bread underneath (they’re still super juicy!).
  3. Cook for 3-5 minutes until warmed thoroughly. Since they are already pre-cooked, they do not need to get to the full 160 degrees internal temperature.

What Can You Top Brats With?

While I love to top them with a little sauerkraut and Swiss cheese, here are some other ideas:

  • Peppers and Onions
  • Ketchup and Mustard
  • Relish and Diced Onions
  • Cheese curds
  • Pineapple and BBQ sauce
  • Jalapenos and Bacon Bits (you can even use Air Fryer Bacon to create the bacon bits!
  • Buffalo sauce and blue cheese
  • Potato chips and ketchup

You expect the almighty air fryer to turn out crisp fried chicken, crunchy french fries and other goodies with that key f-word in their names. But the air fryer is a lot more versatile than you might think. From hard boiled eggs to molten lava cakes and even homemade bagels, there are scores of intriguing air fryer recipes to try.

What are the benefits of an air fryer?

Like the near-universally adored Instant Pot, the air fryer promises faster cooking and a high degree of versatility (so it seems only natural that the Instant Pot people have finally come out with their own air fryer , which one-ups some of its competitors by adding a rotisserie function).

The thing that makes any air fryer so good at both crisping foods and cooking them quickly is its hot air circulation — basically, it’s a form of countertop convection oven. While it obviously handles traditionally deep-fried foods with aplomb (and makes them healthier, since far less oil is required), its design makes it great for lots of other things too, from certain baked goods to roasted garlic.

If you know me well then you know I am very fond of traditional Asian cuisine. I often frequent a local Vietnamese restaurant a couple of blocks from my house. Yes, I know crab rangoon is NOT an authentic Asian appetizer, but that will not stop me from enjoying it! I make my rounds and enjoy authentic Asian meals a lot. So, I deserve to indulge in this un-authentic treat from time to time!

I have become obsessed with my Air Fryer! Growing up, my family ate fried food a lot. My mom fried chicken, pork chops, fish, and other dishes quite a bit. These meals were certainly tasty but obviously are not good for our overall health. Times have changed so much!

We now have a device that can fry food without using all of that grease. That is simply astonishing. As such, you will probably find me in the kitchen every single weekend experimenting with the Air Fryer. I feel like I owe it to my childhood.

What Type of Crab to Use

I use lump crab meat. You can find it in the refrigerated meat section of the grocery store. This recipe is commonly made with imitation crab meat, sometimes called krab meat. You can use that if you wish, it’s also sometimes easier to find.

How to stop an air fryer

Imitation crab is processed fish meat. It is seafood and comes from surimi that has been deboned and minced into paste. It does not contain crab. Crab extract is sometimes added for flavor.

Use whichever you wish. You can read more about What Imitation Crab Is here.

A lot of restaurants that serve crab rangoon use imitation crab meat. If you prefer imitation crab meat, substitute that for the lump crab used in this recipe. There is a difference in taste. If you are looking to replicate your favorite, that may be the best option for you.

Wonton Wrappers

The placement of these in the grocery store will vary. I find them near the egg roll wrappers in the refrigerated area of the produce section of my grocery store.

All wrappers aren’t equal. You may have to try a couple of different brands before you land on your favorite. Some rip and tear pretty easily, which means you will have to double wrap them if needed. Keep this in mind.

How to Make Air Fryer Crab Rangoon

  1. Combine cream cheese, green onions, crab meat, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic in a small bowl. Stir to mix well.
  2. Lay out the wonton wrappers on a working surface.
  3. Load about a teaspoon and a half of filling onto each wrapper. Be careful not to overfill.
  4. Fold each wrapper diagonally across to form a triangle. From there bring up the two opposite corners toward each other. Don’t close the wrapper yet. Bring up the other two opposite sides, pushing out any air. Squeeze each of the edges together. Be sure to check out the recipe video above for illustration.
  5. Load the crab rangoon into the Air Fryer.
  6. Air fry.

Air Fryer Temperature

I recommend 370 degrees.

Many people have either an air fryer basket or an air fryer toaster oven and wonder how they can convert recipes created for the basket to the oven. This blog post will provide you with a step by step breakdown of cooking in the basket vs the air fryer toaster oven.

How to stop an air fryer

As a collector of air fryers…really, I couldn’t stop myself from buying shiny new models, I found myself wondering what the difference was between the air fryer basket and the air fryer oven. The obvious difference is that one is larger than the other (the ovens typically provide more cooking space). Another difference was that baskets provided a nice little handle that allowed me to shake my food. But what about the actual food? Did they produce different results?

I took some time to take notes on how 3 of my popular recipes did in each machine. I chose to make and take note of the following recipes:

  1. Frozen French Fries
  2. Air Fryer Apple Chips
  3. Air Fryer Chicken Wings

Things you should know beforehand:

All air fryer brands are not created the same, so the two I used could have different results than the ones you may have at home. However, your cook times shouldn’t be much different than mine.

For the basket, I used the Cosori 5.8qt and for the oven, I used the Instant Omni Plus Air Fryer Toaster Oven.

For the first round of the air fryer basket vs air fryer toaster oven, let’s start with frozen french fries…

Air Fryer French Fries

How to stop an air fryer

These air fryer french fries are the reason I bought an air fryer in the first place. I used frozen french fries for this side by side comparison. I typically air fry french fries anywhere from 8-12 minutes depending on the type of fries and how thick cut they are.

Amount: .75 lbs of frozen shoestring french fries.

Preheat: Both the basket and the oven were preheated at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 5 minutes. Then each was cooked at 400 degrees Fahrenheit until desired crispiness.

  • Basket: The basket took 8 minutes to cook until desired crispiness.
  • Oven: The oven took 13 minutes to cook until the desired crispiness.
  • Winner: The basket, by a little…as it cooked a few minutes faster.

Air Fryer Apple Chips

How to stop an air fryer

These Air Fryer Apple Chips are another quick favorite snack for me and my girls. It’s just one way I can make them get that apple a day to keep the doctor away. I used 1 Gala apple for this recipe.

Amount: 1 large Gala apple sliced into 2.5mm slices.

Preheat: None. I start apple chips from a cold basket. My air fryer oven does an automatic preheat time, so I adjusted the oven cook time to accommodate that.

  • Basket: Cooked for 16 minutes to reach desired crispiness.
  • Oven: Cooked for 17 minutes to reach the desired crispiness.

Winner: The oven, by a little. My husband said the ones in the oven tasted crispier. I thought they were the same. I’d say it’s a tie and with only a one-minute difference, I’d prefer to do these in the oven since there is more space.

Air Fryer Chicken Wings

These Air Fryer Chicken Wings are one of my all-time favorite things to make in the air fryer. So easy, crispy, and delicious. I cooked these wings with no added seasonings to show the comparisons.

How to stop an air fryer

Amount: 1.83 lbs of chicken wings placed in each device.

Preheat: I preheated each machine to 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 5 minutes before adding wings.

  • Basket: Took 27 minutes to get the desired color and crispiness on these wings.
  • Oven: Took 38 minutes to get the desired color and crispiness on these wings. Please note that the wings in the photo above, on the right, shows the oven wings pulled at 27 minutes. They were much lighter than the wings in the basket, so I added them back in until they were browner.

Winner: The basket. The wings were done much faster. However, once I increased the time on the oven wings, I could not tell a difference.

Conclusions:

  • Whether it’s the air fryer basket or the air fryer oven, both will cook faster than a conventional oven. An air fryer basket and oven typically take 5 minutes to preheat.
  • The air fryer basket tends to cook foods a little faster than the air fryer oven, and the amount of time will differentiate between machines and kinds of food cooked.
  • The air fryer oven can hold more food. Although not pictured here, we use our air fryer oven to make pizza in the air fryer. We’re only able to fit one small size pizza in the air fryer basket. With the oven, we can fit two pan size pizzas side by side.
  • When converting recipes created for an air fryer basket to an air fryer oven, plan to cook the recipes for a little longer. As each air fryer is different, keep a close eye on the foods. You can actually watch the foods in the oven as they cook, as to not overcook them.
