How to spot a fake i. d

Living in a college town means students, students mean underage, underage means fake ID. Your first two years of college you are underage and it sucks. But most people try to beat the system and get a fake ID. But how good is your fake ID really? Here is some mistakes rookies commonly make when purchasing theirs first fake ID and how to spot a fake ID.

1. Most over used states

If you are going to order a fake ID from China King or ID King or whatever they’re calling themselves now, DO NOT order a Florida, Pennsylvania, Connecticut or Illinois ID. These are the most commonly ordered fake IDs and bouncers know it. Also don’t get the state that you live in because bouncers or bartenders look at that state ID all day every day and even if the slightest thing is wrong on your fake they will immediately notice.

2. Second form

Don’t even think about getting a fake ID if you don’t have a second form ready for backup. Underage people want to order IDs and use fake names but when you get asked for a second form, you’re screwed. Your ID will get taken and you better pray there isn’t a cop next to the bouncer.

3. ID thickness

When you feel your real ID it is thick, like a credit card, make sure your fake is the same thickness too. Flimsy IDs are an obvious give away that the ID isn’t real. Sometimes it’s worth spending the few extra bucks to make sure you have a quality ID.

4. Picture

You know how the DMV always takes the shittest picture ever? Well if your fake ID looks like a selfie you took Friday night before you went to the club, your ID Is fake. If you have shadows under your eyes or around your body, your ID is fake. Fake as shit.

5. Holograms

This is probably the easiest way to identify a fake ID. If you don’t have a hologram on your fake ID then just go home because there is no way in hell you are getting in the club. When the bouncers move your ID around a little and it is dull with no hologram, then you’re screwed.

6. Don’t look guilty

Confidence is key with fake IDs .If you keep looking around or start sweating, you look/are guilty and everyone knows it.. If you act guilty, chances are you’re doing something you’re not supposed to be doing.

7. Scan

At gas stations and grocery stores they scan your ID at the check-out. If you have a cheap shitty fake ID, you will get denied and it’s going to be embarrassing. The cashier might even take your ID. Don’t even try going to grocery stores until you’re actually 21 because it’s too sketchy.

Top 10 Summer Party Games Everyone Will Love

8. Signature font

A rookie mistake, the font. No one’s signature looks good on a driver’s license so if you have some Microsoft word script font signature, that’s a red flag. Do it the old school way and sign a white sheet of printer paper and upload that, instead of trying to make it look too perfect.

9. If it looks fake, it probably IS fake

An ID that is a piece of paper that has been laminated is obviously fake. If your ID looks or feels fake, don’t use it. Worried your ID won’t get you in the club because it’s not A1? Don’t use it, you’re probably right. If you have to question if your ID will work, then it won’t.

10. Be in sync with your friends

If all your friends have Florida IDs and you have a Pennsylvania one, you’re standing out and drawing unwanted attention to yourself. Being the odd man out is raises suspicions, shit isn’t adding up. Same goes for if you and all your friends have different state IDs, I mean what are the chances your whole friend group is from 10 different states? Yeah, slim to none.

Turning 18 is an exciting time. From finally being able to vote to heading out for a pint with friends, there is a lot going on. People under 18 are often just as excited to enjoy an alcoholic beverage. In some cases, this leads to purchasing a fake ID.

Whether you’re a bar owner or a 17-year-old reveler, there are a few things you should know about Australian fake IDs.

Australian Fake ID Types

For many people, the concept of a fake ID includes purchasing an identification card made in a backroom somewhere. As it turns out, though, there is more than just one type of fake ID in Australia.

The false identification cards that we see in movies are ones that are created without proper authority. Some people think that they can simply make their own on their computer, and they often receive a rude awakening the first time they visit an establishment with an ID scanner.

In addition to completely falsified cards, some fake IDs are made from real licenses. Many underage drinkers are caught for altering their ID in some way to appear older. Some people simply use a real identification card that belongs to someone else. For those who attempt these deceptive measures, though, there are serious potential consequences.

Legal Consequences for Using a Fake ID in Australia

While laws vary depending on where you live in Australia, bartenders or door staff will often notify police if an ID appears fake. It is then their duty to turn the card over to police so that a proper investigation can take place.

If you are caught using a fake ID, you may only be asked to leave or be given an informal citation. You may also receive a formal citation. If police officers want to press the matter, though, which is more likely if you’ve been caught before, you could face criminal charges.

These days, there is an increase in the use of ID scanners in bars and nightclubs. ID scanners quickly detect fake cards, and at this point, you are likely to be fined.

Fines vary from state to state. In Western Australia, you’ll get a $200 fine (at least) on the spot for using a fake ID. In New South Wales, this fine is around $220. In Queensland, however, the fine varies from $353 to $589.

On-the-spot penalties could be the best of a bad situation. If police officers decide to take the offender to court, fines between $2,000 and nearly $5,000 are a distinct possibility. Additionally, provisional license periods can be extended.

How to Spot a Fake ID

If you own a bar, pub or other business that sells alcohol, you have a vested interest in spotting fake ID cards. If you serve minors, you could face legal consequences even if they presented fake IDs. Fortunately, there are ways to spot these phony cards.

Check for Foils and Holograms

Regardless of where you reside, a majority of ID cards now come with foil or holograms as a security measure. Ensure that these features are visible, and make sure holograms fade in and out as you turn the card. If a hologram is constantly bright, the card is likely fake.

Scan the ID

People who make fake ID cards have become quite adept, but they don’t often have the money to actually encode a magnet strip. By using an ID scanner, you can quickly tell whether the card is legitimate or not. Scanning the ID into a networked ID Scanner allows you to easily spot a fake, as it quickly performs a series of authenticity checks and even records the ID data to your system.

Many systems also give prompts if they suspect a fake, offering security staff or bartenders questions to ask the presenter of the ID, such as zodiac sign.

Examine More Than the Birth Date

As mentioned, some people use real ID cards that aren’t theirs, so take time to compare the photo with the cardholder. Using an Australian fake ID isn’t considered child’s play; it’s a serious crime. For minors, it’s best to wait until 18 to drink, and for bar owners, make sure you’re protected by catching fake IDs as soon as you see them.

If you are involved in supplying alcohol in any way and want to protect yourself from legal consequences, contact Scantek today for a free ID scanner trial and keep minors out of your establishment.

What is Caller ID Spoofing?

Caller ID Spoofing is when you receive a phone call or text message from a phone number which is different from the number that is making the call or text. Normally this results in the Caller ID of the incoming call appearing to be a local number, or maybe even someone you know, but the reality is that the person calling you could be very far away, and isn’t calling from that number at all. Since the person making the call can change what number appears as their caller ID, it is incredibly difficult to block these callers because they can always change their Caller ID to another number to circumvent the block.

The reason that Caller ID can sometimes be inaccurate, or “spoofed” is due to a technique called Frequency Shift Keying, also known as FSK. FSK is a process where binary data is passed along the phone line when someone makes a call. Some of that data (specifically, the data that shows up for caller ID) can be modified in transit, allowing a person who wants to spoof their number to modify what data appears on your caller ID.

The FTC has a handy infographic which demonstrates this:

How to spot a fake i. d

How to tell if someone is spoofing their caller ID

There are a few methods you can use to tell if someone is calling using a fake or spoofed caller ID. Some of these methods depend on the type of device you are using to receive the call.

1. Call the displayed number back (call-back method)

The easiest way to determine if the person calling you is using a fake caller ID is by putting the number on hold and calling them back to see if the call connects. If the call doesn’t connect, then it’s safe to say that you are on the phone with someone who has spoofed their number. It’s important to note that even if you call the number and it connects to the service that appears on Caller ID, you should never give out information relating to your account details or bank account information unless you call the phone number of the company directly. You should always lookup on a search engine and call the number of the company directly that is requesting this information so that you can be sure you are speaking to a real customer service agent and not someone who is spoofing the caller ID of a bank or government agency.

2. Check if the number is a variation or close to your phone numbers’ digits

Spoofed calls sometimes have the appearance of a similar area code or in close proximity of the phone number the system is dialing, in order to appear more legitimate. This process is called “neighbor spoofing“. For example, if your phone number is (454) 555-1234, the spoofed call might appear as “(454) 555-1237” – close enough in proximity to your own phone number to draw suspicion, but similar to a phone number within your area code that you might be willing to answer the phone number just to see if it’s someone you know. In this case, it’s always best to let the call go to voicemail and not answer the phone call, because that might indicate to the person spamming or spoofing the call that it is a valid phone number – and set you up to receive more spoofed calls in the future.

3. Beware of automated messages or robocalls – these are usually a spoofed call

If a number calls you and the person on the other end sounds automated or recorded, it’s most likely a spoofed call. Automated phone dialers (robocalls) utilize software to identify phone numbers within your area code, and use those numbers. Sometimes the numbers that are used actually belong to other people within your area, but are spoofed with the robocaller. If you are unsure if you are speaking to an automated message or robocall, interrupt the person speaking and ask a specific question, such as “Where are you calling from today?” – if they do not answer or you hear a dial tone, it’s likely a spoofed number

4. Lookup the phone number in a reverse phone number lookup directory

If you’ve exhausted all other options, you can try to lookup the unknown phone number using our reverse phone number lookup service. It’s a free way to get information about a phone number, and is a handy way to determine if the number that’s calling you is spoofed, or legitimate. Keep in mind that there are sophisticated spoofing technologies that utilize a real phone number – this may not actually be the number that called you!

Are Spoofed Phone Numbers Legal?

Depending on your location and laws of your country, spoofed calls may be illegal depending on who is calling you, but it varies from location to location. Generally, a company spoofing a phone number to show a toll-free call-back number is not illegal, and makes it easier for consumers to reach businesses if they need to call back at a later date.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) stated in the Truth in Caller ID Act that:

No person in the United States, nor any person outside the United States if the recipient is in the United States, shall, with the intent to defraud, cause harm, or wrongfully obtain anything of value, knowingly cause, directly, or indirectly, any caller identification service to transmit or display misleading or inaccurate caller identification information in connection with any voice service or text messaging service.

Note that this also applies to text messages as well, not just phone calls.

Preventing Spoofed Calls

There are a few ways to cut down on the number of spoofed calls or calls coming from a fake caller ID. One way is to register your phone number on the DoNotCall directory, which will indicate to marketers and advertisers that you do not receive phone calls offering services, and makes it illegal for the marketers to call you.

If you have an iPhone, you can configure your iPhone to send all unknown phone calls to voicemail, which over time will reduce the number of phone calls that you receive. Robocalls work by testing to see if a phone number is active, and if a number that is dialed keeps going to voicemail, it’s likely that they will stop calling you using a spoofed number because it’s registered as “inactive” or “non responsive”.

Catch Fake IDs by Using the “FLAG” System

Identity theft is rampant, so if you ask for a customer’s ID as part of your business or campus procedure, you or your employees need to know what a fake ID looks like. If you don’t know and have done nothing to protect yourself, then shame on you. Identity thieves count on your lack of knowledge so they can use false identification cards (some even poorly made) to defraud you of your service and/or money.

And don’t think that identity theft is just a minor financial crime. The two worst cases of domestic terrorism in the United States (Oklahoma City and World Trade Center bombings) were both committed by suspects using fake IDs.

Many industries (hotel, retail, mortgage, escrow, property rental, healthcare, etc.) ask for identification, but don’t train their employees how to recognize a fake ID. There are more than 240 different types state government-issued IDs in the United States. Most states use the same security features, but they add their own twists. Some of these features can be seen with the naked eye, while others require some simple technology such as a UV light and a high-quality magnifying glass.

The California Department of Alcohol and Beverage Control teaches a system called “FLAG” to check IDs. It stands for “Feel”, “Look”, “Ask” and “Give” back to the person or police. There are more than 25 different points to check in FLAG to be aware of on ID cards.

F is for ‘Feel’

There are some tactile security features you should be able to feel. First, do not accept an ID shown to you from inside a wallet window slot, which prevents you from touching it. Have the person take his or her ID out of their wallet so you can feel it.

When you are holding it in your hands, be mindful that ID thieves have learned to counterfeit some tactile features. Fortunately, the quality of these features is below state-issued identification cards. Focus on the quality. Even try scratching the card with your fingernail or a coin to see if tactile items come off or change easily. If they do, you’ve got a fake ID in your hands.

L is for ‘Look”

Look at the picture. Is the person standing in front of you the same person in the ID picture? This is very subjective. You will need to focus on the “Triangle of Recognition” area of the face (eyes, ears, nose, mouth and chin). The triangle is the area across the face from ear to ear and down to the bottom of the chin. Unless the person has had plastic surgery, these areas will not change dramatically over a period of time.

Hair, eye brows, eye color and facial hair can be changed. Faces can get thinner or heavier with weight gain or loss. However, the position of the ears and eyes will not usually change. Look for a difference that can’t be explained. For example, if the person standing in front of you has a dimple on the chin, but there is no dimple seen in the photo ID, then this should be considered a red flag. Dimple implant surgery is not a logical explanation.

Additionally, look at the signature. You do not have to be a handwriting expert to recognize a major difference in the signature on the card and on a document you have them sign in front of you. Can a person’s signature vary? Yes, but it could also be dramatically different because that person is using an ID that does not belong to them.

A is for ‘Ask’

Bouncers at bars are good at asking questions and catching the fake ID holder in a lie. For example, the fake ID will probably have a fake date of birth. This new fake birth date might fall under a different Zodiac sign than the suspect’s real birth date Zodiac sign. You might ask the suspect “What is your Zodiac sign?” The suspect might know his fake date of birth because he memorized it but probably won’t know his new Zodiac sign. Similar questions related to the address or other data listed could also be used to catch them off guard. Watch facial expressions or stutters in answers which could reveal potential fraud.

G is for ‘Give It Back or Give It to the Police’

If you have checked all the security features to the best your ability and believe that the person in front of you is the same person in the picture, give the card back to them and continue doing business with them. If you believe you have a fake ID, you can seize the card.

However, do not get into the business of confiscating fake IDs and possibly being assaulted over it. We suggest that you photocopy the ID card if you can and return it to the suspect. Also, are you in a safe environment (your office with fellow employees vs. the suspect’s house)? Can you ask for a secondary form of ID if you are not sure? If you want to file a fraud crime report afterward, the photocopy of the ID will be very helpful to the police investigation.

These Steps Are Just a Start

Every 2 seconds, an identity is stolen in the United States, reports CNN. Additionally, 46 percent of all identity theft crimes are committed with a fake ID. If every industry were trained how to spot a phony identification card, almost half of the identity theft crimes would be stopped.

The police can’t investigate every identity theft crime and recover your loss. However, you can take the steps to train your staff or employees and protect yourself and your campus. Or, you can continue to ask for IDs and blindly accept them as real. But if you get fooled and become another victim, the onus is on you.

Contact your local ISG dealer today to take steps in not only catching fake ID cards, but to make sure that your organization’s ID cards cannot be altered or counterfeited. If you can eliminate the ability of counterfeiters to use your cards, you have already done your part in reducing fake ID crimes.

Check the credential’s micro print to determine if a state-issued identification card is genuine or counterfeit.

How to spot a fake i. d

Every 2 seconds, an identity is stolen in the United States, and 46 percent of all identity theft crimes are committed with a fake ID.

It was cool evening in Santa Cruz, Calif., when a pretty young girl named Bethany walked up to the doorman at a local college bar. She eagerly handed her ID to him. As he held it up to the light, I could see it was a Florida driver license.

The doorman handed the ID to me. I checked for the micro print security feature with my magnifier and instantly recognized it as being counterfeit. I asked Bethany to step out of line and placed her under arrest for presenting a fake ID.

Bethany was 17 years old. Her counterfeit Florida driver license said she was 22. While we waited for Bethany’s mother to come pick her up, I asked her where she got the ID. “IDchief,” she told me. Bethany went on to say that nine of her friends bought their IDs at the same time and got a group discount. For less than $100, she got two fake Florida driver licenses. That night she had left the other at home.

The doorman was interested in how I could tell it was counterfeit. When I showed him the ID, explained and that he would need to invest a few dollars in a 10X magnifier, he nodded and said, “This explains all the Florida IDs I’ve been seeing lately.”

Foreign Web Sites Market to Minors

Why is it so easy for teenagers to get these fake IDs? Overseas companies like IDChief target kids with headlines like, “The spring break is coming! Students from across the world get ready for travelling and having fun in your favourite restaurants and bars with your new ID!” The pricing encourages group orders, and the IDs are shipped — concealed in packages containing sales brochures, calculators and other cheap, disposable items designed to defeat X-rays. has hit the counterfeit ID market like a tsunami. The Web site, based in Asia, offers good quality IDs for a reasonable price. Their products possess several of the security features of genuine IDs. To the cursory examiner, the ID looks good. It has bright, easily seen holograms and UV features. It looks professionally made so kids like Bethany are always confident about showing it to you.

You might be asking yourself, is there any point to even checking IDs when it’s seemingly impossible to tell the difference between a real one and counterfeit one? The answer is yes. Keeping up with the latest security features and what the counterfeiters are doing will protect you and your campus from the criminal and civil liability surrounding underage drinking.

Micro Print Not Easily Replicated

For now let’s focus on the security features that aren’t successfully replicated, such as micro print. While IDChief provides exceptional quality for a counterfeit, the company has not been able to replicate most of the security features used on state issued IDs, including micro print.

Micro print is extremely small printed text that, to the naked eye, appears to be a solid line. When magnified, the letters are clear, distinct and readable. Genuine micro print requires at least 10X magnification. Currently 48 states are using micro print as a security feature. None of the counterfeit cards from IDChief have micro print. The right training and a 10X magnifier is all it takes to reveal the fake ID.

Bethany’s Florida ID should have had a rectangular box on the back side. The box on the real ID is actually made up of micro print. On a genuine New Jersey ID, the micro print forms an outline of the Garden State on the back of the card. When compared to the IDChief version, the difference is easy to recognize.

Illinois places its micro print on the back of the card as a line under the state Web site address. IDChief’s counterfeit Illinois ID doesn’t even come close. Currently, 48 states are using micro print as a security feature. Grab a 10X magnifier and look!

And back to Bethany, whose Mom arrived to take custody of her. That “deal” she thought she got for less than 100 bucks ended up costing her many times that in criminal court fees and community service.

Training Helps Officers Detect Counterfeits

There are simple and easy tricks to detecting fake ID. With a few hours of training every employee can quickly and easily learn to recognize even the best fake ID. Protect your students, employees and your campus.
