How to shop at mall of america

Generally considered to be the largest mall in the United States, the Mall of America is located in Bloomington, Minnesota. In reality, the mall, also known as MoA and the MegaMall, is the largest U.S. shopping mall in terms of entire floor space, and the second largest in terms of retail space. It features over 500 retail stores arranged on three stories. A planned expansion of the Mall of America will add up to another 400 stores.

Opened in 1992, the Mall of America was built on the former site of Metropolitan Stadium, home to the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins until 1982 when the teams left for a new home at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. To acknowledge the history of the site, the Mall has two memorials – a plaque in the amusement park and a seat from the original stadium, which is placed in the exact location it occupied there. The seat commemorates the 1967 home run by Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew.

The Mall was built in partnership with a number of groups including Melvin Simon and Associates, TIAA (Teachers Insurance and Annuity) and the Triple Five Group, which continues to own and operate the mall today. In addition to the 520 stores, the Mall of America includes a full size amusement park, a 300 foot long aquarium, a 14 screen movie theater and flight simulators.

Nickelodeon Universe is the largest indoor amusement park in the United States. It opened on March 15, 2008, taking the place of Camp Snoopy, which had been part of the Mall of America since 1992. It has also been called Knotts’ Camp Snoopy and The Park at MOA. Nickelodeon Universe is free to enter, but the rides and attractions require purchased tickets for admission. Day passes and season passes are also available. Rides range from kiddie-themed rides like Diego’s Rescue Rider to thrill rides that include the Pepsi Orange Streak and the Fairly Odd Coaster.

Also located at the Mall of America, the Underwater Adventures Aquarium is a 14 feet deep aquarium bisected by a 300 foot long tunnel. In addition to the underwater tunnel, the Aquarium features a number of exhibits that allow visitors to explore various underwater and shore ecosystems. Underwater Adventures is open daily on a varying schedule, and offers educational tours as well as special events. It can be booked for birthday parties and meetings, and offers special behind the scenes tours by reservation.

The Mall of America features four main anchor stores and four “junior anchors”. The main anchor stores are Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Nordstrom and Sears. They are buttressed by Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, DSW Warehouse and Marshall’s. The mall includes more than 500 other stores, including the newly opened American Girl store. The range of shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities available at the Mall of America have made the MoA a tourist destination in and of itself. There are shuttles available to the mall from downtown, as well as from the airport, and it is well serviced by public transportation.

The Mall is open daily from 10 am to 9:30 pm, and from 11 am to 7 pm on Sundays. Nickelodeon Universe and other attractions have their own opening and closing hours.

Create digital art, laugh along with stand-up comedians or get a bird’s-eye view of the mall by taking a spin on the country’s longest indoor zipline. What do all these things have in common? You can find them at Mall of America.

Consider that if you only spent 10 minutes in each of the Mall of America’s 500-plus stores, you’d need 86 hours to see them all. If you’re a first-timer, pressed for time or want to do more than shop, here are our top 10 favorite Mall of America destinations for interactive entertainment and family fun:

1) Nickelodeon Universe Leave at least an hour or two for the top family attraction and epicenter of the mall. You can go screaming along the Pepsi Orange Streak or dropping off the Rock Bottom Plunge. Or opt for tamer rides like the Ferris wheel with its cool park views or toddler-friendly rides on hot-air balloons and miniature trucks. (952) 883-8800; nickelodeonuniverse.com

2) Sea Life Aquarium Visitors start in a replica of Minnesota’s North Woods, birthplace of the Mississippi River, and follow ramps downward past exhibits of freshwater river fish and Southern swamps, ending with information on the Gulf of Mexico and tropical oceans. Kids will love the touch tanks, aquariums with jellies and sea dragons, and walking through a clear tunnel as sharks, turtles and manta rays glide overhead and eye-to-eye. (952) 883-0202; visitsealife.com/minnesota

3) Lego store Even before The Lego Movie, this store has been a beloved destination for all ages. Chalk it up to the gigantic gawk-worthy Lego creations (a robot, a helicopter and a caveman facing a saber-tooth tiger just to name a few), a wall stocked with more than 180 colors and styles of brick pieces, and tables where visitors can sit and play surrounded by inspiration. (952) 858-8949; stores.lego.com

4) Dutchman’s Deck Barnacle Blast Zip Line whirs visitors 70 feet off the ground and across 405 feet of Nickelodeon Universe on the country’s longest indoor zipline. The attraction includes the Ghostly Gangplank high-ropes course on which harnessed guests walk across planks and narrow or wiggly bridges before reaching a spiral slide (the Anchor Drop) for the trip back down. (Admission to this adventure is not included in the all-day park pass.) (952) 883-8800, nickelodeonuniverse.com/rides/dutchmans-deck-adventure-course/

5) Crayola Experience + Store More than two dozen activities include naming and wrapping a Crayola crayon, creating your own coloring pages, working with digital art, and learning how Crayons are made in a live show. crayolaexperience.com

6) Rotunda shows The best place to sight the many celebs drumming up publicity is the Rotunda. Get in line early to snag a seat for musical performances or scout out a spot along upper-floor railings overlooking the Rotunda. It’s also used for book signings, dance performances, choir concerts, cheer competitions, plus gaming and product demonstrations. mallofamerica.com/events

7) American Girl For girls hooked on these dolls, this two-story store and bistro-with special doll seats and light eats- can be a dreamy place to explore. Check the store calendar for free crafts, scavenger hunts, and other activities on weekends and some weekdays. For dolls needing TLC, there’s also a hair salon. (877) 247-5223; americangirl.com

8) House of Comedy Head to the fourth-floor entertainment district to eat and go bowling or verbally spar with intentionally cranky waiters. At Rick Bronson’s House of Comedy, feast on a state-fair-theme appetizer plate (mini donuts, cheese curds and more) while laughing along with touring stand-up comics. (952) 858-8558; houseofcomedy.net

9) Moose Mountain Adventure Golf Life-size moose and horses are just some of the adventures that visitors come across on the 18-hole miniature golf course. mallofamerica.com

10) FlyOverAmerica Give your legs a break from mall walking and soar over national treasures such as Niagara Falls on one of the mall’s newer rides. flyover-america.com

In an effort to reach out and engage patients, Mayo Clinic set up shop in an unlikely spot–the mall. The “Create Your Mayo Clinic Health Experience” in the Mall of America offers shoppers with a personalized experience that’s part health and wellness and part retail store. The 2,500-square-foot space has the high-tech, modern feel of an Apple store and offers an interactive library of Mayo Clinic health information.

FierceHealthcare talked with Dr. David Hayes, medical director of the Create Your Mayo Clinic Health Experience at Mall of America, about the Clinic’s new, innovative project.

FierceHealthcare: What factors drove Mayo Clinic to open the Health Experience center at the Mall of America?
David Hayes:
Mayo Clinic believes healthcare in the future won’t be limited to doctors’ offices and hospitals. Medicine needs to adapt to peoples’ changing needs, including seeing people where they are and when it is convenient for them. Mall of America is the ideal gateway for many of Mall of America’s visitors to access Mayo Clinic in non-traditional ways.

FH: What is Mayo Clinic hoping to achieve with the center? Are there any financial incentives for Mayo Clinic?
Hayes:
Mayo Clinic is hoping to provide an opportunity for people to define their own wellness goals, access interactive information, and explore resources dedicated to their health. This is a personalized engagement that is part health and wellness experience and part retail store. While we will have limited clinical offerings at this time, the motivation for this space is not financial.

FH: How is the center offering personalized health and wellness experiences? What type of employees work at the center?
Hayes:
Create Your Mayo Clinic Health Experience is staffed primarily by health experience navigators. The navigators are trained wellness professionals who help guests identify their wellness goals and access the information and resources necessary to achieve them. Whether guests want to ask a quick question or engage in a private consultation, our Mayo Clinic health experience navigators are there to help them customize their experience. For example, individuals may take a self-directed wellness assessment on site, and the health experience navigators are able to walk through the results with the individual and, in the near future, will be able to provide a more in-depth wellness assessment in an adjacent location. They can also answer health-related questions and/or access information for the customer through many Mayo resources.

FH: How has the response been so far to the center?
Hayes:
As you can imagine, bringing Mayo Clinic to Mall of America has created a lot of buzz, and we are pleased with the tremendous interest in this health and wellness experience.

FH: What has been the most common patient concern or ailment, and how has the center been able to address the problem?
Hayes:
Because this is a personalized [and] private engagement with Mayo Clinic, we are not tracking these kinds of things. But, as you can imagine, this large population of visitors from a cross-section of our community has widely varying questions about their health and wellness.

FH: Does Mayo Clinic plan to open similar Health Experience centers in the future?
Hayes:
There are no plans for other projects like this. The Mall of America project will, however, enable Mayo Clinic to learn about adapting its services to other settings. What we learn could have implications in other locations. If we find this is an excellent venue and method by which to connect with more people on issues relating to their health and wellness, we will give further consideration to how and where we would apply this is in the future.
