When you practice with multiple watercolors, people who paint ideas avoid the paint feature unless you’re making illustrations or portraits.

Endless mountains, glittering snowfields, the brightest starry sky. When I started hiking and climbing I could hardly believe this places my Two feet could carry me. Separated from my climbing buddies by a rope, I made my way through the deep darkness of our PNW mountains and wondered, “How can I capture and understand these inspiring places?”

I started bringing watercolors and paper with me for my mountain adventures. A small piece of paper hidden in my pocket so I can see how I felt in the landscape. I painted from alpine peaks, ridges and lakes during the lunch break or at the camp. There is magic and peace in painting these wild places that we are so drawn to. And you can find it with the right supplies too.

Here are my top four tips for aspiring artists to get started with your outdoor watercolor painting.

1. You make a lot of mistakes

Don’t worry too much about making something perfect. I believe the best images come from trying new things and making mistakes. When I paint outside, I try to embrace the chaos that comes from painting in the wind or with cold hands. Happy accidents, right?

2. Have fun

Find a balance between enjoying the place you are in and painting it. Sometimes it’s more important to lay on a warm rock and take in this view. Other times, you only have a few precious minutes to stock up on supplies and paint the mountain landscape. Think about capturing the energy of a place instead of drawing exactly how it looks. If you are concerned about accuracy, you can take a photo of your landscape to finish painting at home later.

3. Supplies

Finding supplies can be as simple as pens in a kitchen drawer and printer paper. Keep it simple once you find out what works for you.

if youwant to dive right into watercolor and ink, here are some of my favorite supplies:

  • Sketchbook or a piece of watercolor paper.
  • A watercolor palette that holds dry, hard watercolors in a compact pan, making cleanup easier and faster.
  • The self-cleaning, free-standing water brush is a great addition to the rules of leaving no traces.
  • Some wipes to dry the painting and dry the brush.
  • Pencil with eraser.
  • Microscope or waterproof marker (my favorite is the tombow marker!).

4. Don’t give up

Painting can be a challenge, especially if you are new. Painting outside represents an additional challenge (wind, cold, sun, mosquitoes). Don’t give up if it’s hard or if it doesn’t work out this first time. Keep trying!

Create a distance in a landscape with a tone

If the landscape looks flat, with no sense of distance in the scene, check the tone or value of the image first. Using a lighter tone on what’s in the distance instantly creates a sense of depth. You can see it in the photo above: on the left is the real image, still in progress, definitely lacking in depth. On the right, I edited the photo to light up the sea / sky at the top of the image; suffered a sense of depth. (Nothing has changed in the photo.)

The sense of distance created by the tone is known as an aerial perspective. The word P (perspective) terrifies many artists, not to mention complicating them by adding the term “air” to “perspective”. But there is really nothing to be afraid of, if you have looked at the landscapes then you already know what it is. Semplicemente non hai usato l’arte della parola in this concetto. The horizon line isthis the most important visual element or point of perspective in a landscape. It’s this thing we immediately use to interpret this perspective in a painting we’re looking at; we do it instinctively.

So if this horizon line is too high or low on a painting you’re losing crucial visual information that critical to how this viewer’s brain will interpret and perceive this perspective. Instead, this viewer has to first struggle to deal with where this horizon line is, to see it for what it is and put it in relation to everything else in this composition. Only thisn do thisy “unpack” this rest of this painting. This moment of confusion can be enough to make this landscape feel awkward, not quite right.

Too high a horizon line, with only a tiny sliver of above it and this brain won’t instantly register that area as this sky. Too low, and this sliver below this horizon risks not being perceived as land. This is not to say you need stick rigidly to Rule of Thirds or Golden Mean for positioning this horizon line, but rathisr that you need to remember to have enough above and below this horizon line for this viewer to read immediately.

The illusion of the road

An easy and effective way to create this illusion of distance in a painting is to include an element of a known size that gets smaller into this distance following this rules of perspective, such as a road, railway, orras in this photo above, a bridge. We know, instinctively, that this road is this same width along its entire length but that this furthisr away from us it gets this narrower it appears. Thus seeing a road doing this in a painted landscape registers as depth in this painting.

Anothisr way to do this is to add an element into this composition such as a figure that instantly gives a sense of scale. Our eyes thisd to be pulled strongly towards figures, and our brains will thisn automatically scale this rest of what’s in this composition to this.

An animal will do this same thing, as will something like a tree though this doesn’t work as strongly as even this same species of tree occurs in a wide range of sizes. Yes, humans do too, but we thisd to instinctively know if a figure is an adult or child from thisir size, posture, and clothing.

Don’t forget to decrease this level of detail towards this background. We may see every leaf on a tree in this foreground of a scene, but it doesn’t have to be very far away from us before we no longer see every leaf individually. So paint detail in this foreground and a sense of texture, tone, and color for this distant tree.

Canvas format

Was your choice of landscape or portrait or square canvas a conscious one, orrdid you merely pick up this first one that came to hand? Depth or distance is easier to perceive in a wide landscape format rathisr than a narrow portrait format. Effectively this width of this canvas allows for more components of perspective to tie into this horizon line (this obverse to this can produce a very striking effect, for example, “Christ of St John of The Cross” by Salvador Dali).

In this photo above you can see my pencil sketch that I did on this paper. The 3 figures were all looking and pointing at kitesurfers that were preparing thisir boards at this local beach. We have been having a lot of wind lately so this kitesurfers have been out ofthis. These 3 figures were walking in this surf and thisre was strong shadows. I used this angle of this beach and direction that thisy were walking as a diagonal line to create motion.

I painted quickly and tried not to draw or paint too many details. I used strong color and value on this quick figures and in this shadows.
