Craft supplies

Before starting this project, you will need the following materials:

So last year I was on that ornamental ice cream stick kick.

I thought it would be easy enough for kids to make a Christmas tree out of an ice cream stick. And it was a cute ornament that kids could show off on the Christmas tree.

I love when kids make Christmas tree decorations. Last year we also made these cute snowflakes into ice cream sticks and reindeer into ice cream sticks!

First steps

I got some ice cream sticks, green paint, ribbon and a huge selection of buttons for our Christmas trees.

It was a job I did last year with my boys. I didn’t get any step by step pictures so this is me “recreating” it!

Step 1: Create your tree

I used ice cream sticks and made a triangle around the outline of our Christmas trees. I hot glued the triangle together so we didn’t have to wait for the glue to dry. My boys were ready to create!!

I broke some ice cream sticks to make the bottom of our Christmas tree. I used my scissors to cut them straight across, so that I wouldn’t have any jagged edges.

Step 2: Paint your tree

I gave each boy a bowl with green and brown paint and had ice cream sticks painted. We let it dry for 15 minutes.

Step 3: Decorate your tree

After the paint dried, I gave the boys some buttons and pompoms. My four year old was able to make glue dots and put buttons on himself.

My 2 year old son needed a little help with his tree. I made the glue dots myself and he was able to put pompom balls on the glue.

Step 4: final touches

On top I added a colorful ribbon to hang on the Christmas tree. Voila, a great homemade ornament for your tree.

When we finished my eldest son was very proud to display his ornament on the tree. That’s why I love crafting with my boys. I love seeing their faces when they’re done. They are very proud of what they have created and excited to show their dad.

Digression:If you want even more Christmas memorabilia, you should check out this cute snowman ornament I made with the guys.

I think next year I’ll dedicate the tree to the kids’ room and put all the decorations they’ve done in it!

In SoCal, the long-sleeved time has finally come and Santa Claus are starting to appear in shopping malls and malls.

The big question is: when does the Christmas tree get up?

We tend to wait a little closer to Christmas because when the tree is tall, the children start asking when the presents are coming. Also, even if we use an artificial tree, the leaves still fall and “leave” a mess on the floor.

So, to get into the festive mood without setting up a Christmas tree, today let’s make a Christmas tree decoration with an ice cream stick! It’s super simple, and your kids will have tons of fun decorating their tree ornaments.

stick of ice cream Christmas Tree Craft

Every year my daughter’s school hosts a fantastic Christmas party that all families can join.

There is a big meal (with lots of sweets), artisan tables, activities, entertainment and Santa Claus usually shows up.

A few years ago, a parent brought pre-assembled triangles out of ice cream sticks for an adorable Christmas tree. There were many different craft materials for all the kids to customize their own saplings.

It was such a hit at the party that I have since started making these ice cream trees every year with my kindergarten kids.

This ship provides:

  • basic shape recognition (triangular trees, round pompoms, square tree trunks, etc.)
  • practicing fine motor skills (whether it’s manipulating small craft materials or wrapping yarn or pipe cleaners to create a wreath)
  • tongue options (stiff sticks, soft pompoms, rough pipe cleaners, smooth paper)
  • lots of opportunities for children to do their craft and be creative

How to make popsicle stick christmas trees

My daughter helped me pre-assemble the triangular trees for the kindergarten kids so that we could focus on decorating them. Although she was able to decorate her trees while the glue holding the triangular shaped sticks still lingered, for my kindergarten kids, I knew it would be frustrating if the sticks moved as they tried to decorate.

While I set aside the craft paper for this craft, we usually use these sturdy plastic lunch trays for nearly all of our craft or cooking activities, as well as for our practical Montessori living activities. Ours have survived for over 6 years and are still evolving, plus they’re great for stashing away the clutter and letting kids put the design aside while it dries (or if you need to clear the dinner table).

How beautiful are these ?!

Raise your hand if you’ve ever hung your kid’s, ahem, more abstract crafts on the back of your Christmas tree because you were too protective of the perfectly coordinated front you worked so hard on? Don’t feel bad, we did too, and so did One Little Project blogger Debbie Chapman.

But that’s why she decided to come up with this fun, kid-friendly craft that’s so cute, honestly it looks even cuter than some store-bought ornaments.

How to make popsicle stick christmas trees

We know you’ve probably seen some ice cream before, but don’t the ones decorated with rhinestones outperform them all? From colorful sticks to shiny studs, these definitely make their way to the front of the tree. Most importantly, it’s not one of those trades that will take hours to accomplish. We guarantee that you will make at least three in less time than a real ice cream, especially with a few hands.

Then head over to One Little Project for a materials list and full instructions on how to make these shiny, oily Christmas tree decorations.

One of the things I like to do with children every year is to make some kind of Christmas crafts. They love it and I love that they’re being creative. Plus, we get something new and handmade to add to our tree! However, I also don’t want to spend a fortune or end up making the whole thing myself. So we’ve come up with a few simple and easy popsicle stick Christmas trees that you can make too! Nothing fancy is needed – basic craft store supplies and a small amount of time.

  • stick of ice creams
  • Decorations: Glitter sequins, glitter balls, foam stickers, whatever they like will work
  • Fun ribbon or twine
  • Glue gun / knife (parents only on this side!)
  • Glue – You can use regular glue if you don’t have a glue gun

DIY stick of ice cream Christmas Tree

  • First, collect the trees. Use the entire trunk stick. I also use the whole stick for the lower branch. Use a knife to cut sticks of different lengths for the remaining branches. They will break pretty easily once you score them and they don’t have to be perfect because they will get covered up with decorations.
  • Use a glue gun or regular glue to attach the branches. You can definitely use regular glue, but the glue gun works faster and you can work on the decoration faster. Normal glue dries longer.
  • Then add fun parts. I let my children decorate however they want, without perfection!
  • Cut a small piece of fun ribbon or string and attach each end to the top of the tree.
  • Add it to your tree and chat! Fun crafts to keep kids entertained every year!

Look how shiny and beautiful they are! Your kids will love it! So easy and simple! I’ve tried more complicated crafts with them (for reference, mine are 10 and 7) and they always love the simple ones the best!

And here’s the second one we made and it’s even easier!

  • Use 3 ice cream sticks for each of them – make a triangular shape and glue the ends with glue. Let them decorate with all the shiny fun stuff and that’s it. No hanger needed because it’ll just hang on a branch! I told you it was easy and simple.

These are so simple and fun for kids to make – don’t try to over think it with kids. They don’t care if it’s Pinterest worthy. They just want to do something with you. Reject the urge to make it perfect and have fun with them!

And these are perfect for a kids’ Christmas Eve party! See how we do it and take care of mental health! – How to organize a children’s Christmas party!
