And while the Power Cakes were fine, they weren’t the best pancakes we’ve ever had. To us, Power Cakes are more of the I wear wool socks, go for long hikes and play frisbee with my dog kind of pancakes…

While the Krusteaz pancakes are more like a Saturday morning community pancake breakfast put on by the Lion’s Club where you get a sausage on your plate and maybe a small cup of orange juice for five bucks.

Have I told you we’re getting old, and we don’t watch TV anymore and this is the kind of thing we talk about at the dinner table now? Contemplating what a good pancake should taste like.

Ham and Egg Breakfast Sandwich

Hot, savory and super nutritious, this filling breakfast sandwich is bound to please even the pickiest eater.

Ingredients

Makes 4 servings

  • 4 English muffins, split and toasted
  • 4 slices thick-cut ham
  • 1/2 – 3/4 cup greens (collards, spinach, chard)
  • 4 eggs, fried
  • 4 slices of tomato
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • salt and pepper to taste

Bake the Tomatoes

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and bake four thick cut slices of a large heirloom tomato drizzled in olive oil and pepper for 10-15 minutes until soft and roasted.

Toast the English Muffins + Fry the Eggs

Using a toaster oven (or broiler) slightly toast all side of the English muffins. In a non-stick pan, fry eggs and set aside to cool.

Make the Sauce

To make hollandaise, whisk egg in a bowl and prepare a small pot of simmering water on the stove. Place glass or stainless steel bowl over the simmering water and slowly whisk in melted butter, continuing to whisk over heat until thickened (approximately five to seven minutes).

Build the Sandwich

Layer your breakfast sandwich stack alternating with slices of ham, fried egg, sautéed greens and tomato. Top with hollandaise.

First, this is a real flipping diner, worth the wait. No wait list, you stand outside the door and wait for a table. It's not a big place, probably less than 15 tables. They should take out the video poker area and make more tables available. IMHO. The menu is awesome, fantastic prices, I mean legit fantastic. I ordered the Rafferty, I don't have a clue what it is, but I saw other yelpers suggest it, so why not? Hubby ordered an omelette. Tables turn quick and there is outdoor seating and counter seating. This looks like a local hot spot for sure.
This place is very much what I remember as a diner as a kid, including a payphone and ads on the table top.
The food arrived and everything was very good, fantastic, can't say enough about the food. Highly recommend the Rafferty, but I would add toast if you order.
The drawback was our server Rebecca, after she dropped off the food she never came back fight multiple attempts to fly her down we never got her. I ended up flagging down another service and he helped us. All I wanted to do is order some toast to go with my delicious Rafferty, but Rebecca never came back by. She is the reason why this is only getting four stars, otherwise this would be a five-star review

French Toast was okay. Wish the bread was thicker. Made with sandwich bread. Service excellent. Bar next door very friendly. Just a side note. Lol! Pancakes excellent. Biscuits and gravy. Excellent. Eggs bacon where average.

This is place has character and everything a 24 hour diner from a horror movie should possess except a buzzing no vacancy sign out front. Arriving a little after 4:00 AM we had no idea what to expect but everything I observed after pulling in the parking told me it was going to be a memorable experience. Walking through the door was immediate validation, the small isolated booths the outdated counter and stools the tin ceiling and scruffy decor all painted the picture that we were about to dine in a diner along old Route 66 in the 1950's. The place was mostly filled with fictional type characters that could have been the cast in a Alfred Hitchcock movie, with the staff all playing the lead parts. I kept waiting for Rod Sterling to show up and welcome me to the twilight zone.

All of the whispering and giggling between us quickly subsided once the food was placed before us on the small square semi unstable table that most likely was stabilized with a few folded cards from a deck left over from a illegal poker game. The first plate displayed my perfectly cooked medium fried eggs, with a bone-in grilled ham steak that may have been the best I've ever tasted which I credit to the ancient seasoned flat top it was grilled on, served with the perfect white buttered toast , across from me sat a handcrafted veggie omelette that on looks alone would rival most, paired with some of the most flavorful crispy hash-browns ever they were really incredible (all hash-brown should be eaten with A-1 Steak Sauce these required none) but the star of the breakfast trio was the strange looking oversize biscuit, it was browned and crusty on the outside, feather light and fluffy on the inside it may have been the perfect homemade biscuit, the person responsible for these biscuits should consider a marketing plan. Taking all things into account and maybe overlooking a few possible hygiene issues which in my mind I attributed to the age of the place so I can justify coming back every opportunity I get, this place gets 5 stars in regards to the food, the service and the atmosphere.

About a decade ago, I bought a cheap panini press from a discount shop. For the next few months, I enjoyed plenty of hot sandwiches from basic grilled cheese and tuna melts to hot ham and chicken paninis. Then one day, a dim light went off in my mind as I realized what so many had figured out before me: I could use the thing to make so much more than just sandwiches.

The panini press is technically just two hot surfaces that could be pressed close to one another, so I started using it to grill burgers, cook hash browns, sear fish, and so much more. It was less hassle than firing up the grill outside and quicker than baking or even pan frying in many cases. But as to be expected with cheap appliances, eventually the press passed its prime. The nonstick surface suffered multiple scratches, the locking lever failed, and the heating became uneven.

So is $149.99 expensive for a glorified panini press? Sure. But this isn’t a another cheap one-trick-pony panini press, it’s a genuine electric grill. And even if it was just a regular panini press, now you’ve learned how to hack it — and hopefully a lot faster than it took me too.
