How to make a banana hair mask

Is your hair dry, dull and crying for moisture?

Well, ladies here’s a hair mask made with ‘the most popular fruit in the world’. It will transform your hair into smooth-silky-dazzling beauty.

And that hair-beautifying fruit is….the humble banana.

At times when bananas are overripe, we don’t know what to do with them. You can whip them up for a hair treat. Yes, Banana hair mask!

Bananas provide your hair with tons of moisture and nutrients like vitamin C, magnesium and pantothenic acid or vitamin B5 – the famous hair vitamin for strength, shine and softness.

Benefits of Banana Hair Mask

  • Deep conditions hair and hydrates every strand
  • Leaves hair feeling soft, silky and shiny
  • Encourages faster hair growth
  • Tames frizz and fly-aways
  • Greatly reduces split ends
  • Adds elasticity, manageability and shine

My Experiment with Banana Hair Mask

I had heard a lot of good things about banana hair mask but never tried it. So with two overripe bananas sitting on the kitchen counter (I didn’t want to eat them, or throw them as I feel guilty throwing food away), I thought it was the right time to try this fruit on my hair.

And my verdict — I loved it!

After using this mask, my hair felt super soft and smooth. Plus, banana hair mask made my wavy hair straight (just about) — which was unexpected. It’s very moisturizing and quite literally ‘food for hair’.

Now whenever I have an over-ripe banana, I know what I am going to do with it.

Do you want to give it a try?

How to Make Banana Hair Mask

Making banana mask is more like making a banana shake, you blend it to a smooth paste. And instead of drinking it you apply it on your hair 🙂

  • 1 ripe banana (2 if you have long hair)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk (you can also use full-fat milk or yogurt)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (optional, for extra softness)
  • 1 teaspoon lime juice (optional, helps get rid of greasy build up and flakes)
  • 1 egg/yolk (optional, for body and volume)

Pick a ripe banana (s), put it in a blender (or use a stick blender). Very ripe bananas work best for this recipe. Then, add honey, coconut/ olive oil, and milk and blend really well. You don’t want any chunks, just smooth paste of creamy consistency. This will make it easier to rinse out.

Banana tip:

If you do not want the banana bits to stick to your hair: split the banana half lengthwise and scoop out the centre black seeds, and then use.

How to make a banana hair mask

  • Apply this mask starting at roots and working your way to the ends. Slather as much as you can, making sure you have covered every bit of your scalp and hair. Wind your hair into a loose bun if long.
  • Put on a shower cap or wrap a towel around your head to prevent dripping all over your house.
  • Leave this on for about 30 minutes. While you wait for 30 minutes.. you can read a book, listen to some soothing music, watch your favourite show or sit in a bath.
  • Then rinse hair thoroughly and shampoo as usual. You may not need to condition your hair (see how your hair feels).
  • Let your hair air dry.
  • And enjoy your beautiful hair 🙂

Bananas for Your Skin

If you have got some leftover banana mixture, apply on your face and neck. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then wash with plain water. Your skin will be soft and clear. Bananas help to remove uneven skin tone and blemishes and give you a smooth radiant complexion.

Note: For the face mask, I leave out the lemon/lime juice as I find it drying for my skin.

My hair after combing the banana bits out (preferred the B&W look for this pic 🙂

Banana Residue: After I towel dried my hair, I saw banana bits still left on my hair. This was probably because I didn’t blend the bananas well and there were some chunks left in. Anyway, I couldn’t do much then, so I simply let my hair air dry. After it was 90% dry, I untangled my hair using a wide tooth comb, starting at the ends and slowly working my way up. I then ran a fine comb through my hair to make sure I have no banana bits left in my hair.

I Did Banana Hair Mask Again

When I first did the banana hair mask I didn’t blend it very well and I was left to remove a lot of banana bits from my hair, which was not very nice.

The second time I made sure to blend the banana mixture really well — and leave no chunks. This mask was a great success. It was so much easier to wash off and after I air dried my hair…. it was pure bliss. My hair was really soft, healthy and sleek.

Have a ripe banana sitting in your kitchen? Try this delicious mask for silky smooth hair.

I’d love to hear how yours turned out…

Word of advice: Do not try this mask just before a party or some important event. Try this at your leisure time so you are not left pulling your hair if something was to go wrong.

* 2 to 3 ripe bananas
* A small mixing bowl
* 2 to 3 tablespoons honey
* Plastic wrap or a shower cap
* A towel
* A vitamin E capsule

Step 1. Mix ingredients

Mash two ripe bananas in a small mixing bowl – three if you have long hair – and combine with two to three tablespoons honey.

For extra conditioning, squeeze in a vitamin E capsule.

Step 2. Apply and massage

Apply liberally and gently massage into damp hair, starting at the roots and working your way to the ends.

Don’t brush or comb when using a mask – hair is more prone to damage during treatment.

Step 3. Wrap hair

Wrap your hair in plastic wrap or a shower cap. Use your blow dryer on a warm setting over your head to help the mask penetrate the hair cuticle.

Step 4. Let mask set

Wrap a towel over the plastic and keep the mixture on for at least 30 minutes.

Step 5. Rinse and shampoo

Rinse your hair, shampoo, and condition as usual. Rinse again with very cold water to seal in shine.

Let your hair air dry to maintain shine and reduce heat damage.

FACT: Hair turns gray because older follicles have more hydrogen peroxide, which blocks the synthesis of hair’s natural pigment.

Want to fix your damaged hair with natural hair masks? Inexpensive and easy to make, some have been quite successful when it comes to accomplishing what they promise, like the banana hair mask.

Like the other homemade hair masks like the coconut milk, grapes, sugar, mango with avocado, jelly, and okra ones, adding one of the most popular fruits can be a unique chance to repair the damage on the capillary fiber and, with that, retrieve your hair brightness and softness, while putting an end to the frizzy look.

Benefits of Banana Hair Mask

Besides the numerous benefits of banana for hair in general, this fruit has some hydration purposes which may enhance the effect of the mask treatment and act directly on the reconstruction of the hair, especially those drier and more damaged by the use of chemical products and procedures.

Whether your wires are straight, wavy, curly or frizzy, a banana hair mask can be helpful to reduce the volume and put an end to frizzy hair, typical signs of excessive dryness. This happens because the fruit is regarded as highly moisturizing since it is high in vitamins, lipids, potassium and amino acids, nutrients capable of restoring the water (moisture) of the hair and strengthen them thoroughly.

Also, amino acids are essential for those who are struggling with capillary hair loss or weak, thin and brittle hair, acting as a hair mass replacement. Meanwhile, potassium helps in hair fall prevention and breakage, while also stimulating growth.

In turn, lipids, above all, are responsible for controlling the hair natural oils, another positive point to fully circumvent dryness. In addition, the banana hair mask has other powerful ingredients: vegetable oil (of your preference), milk and sugar, which, as you have already read here on the blog, is a moisturizer with a cuticle sealer role, are also perfect to protect the hair from day-to-day damage.

Who Should Use Banana Hair Mask

The banana hair mask can be made applied in any type of hair that is very dry, thin, weak, brittle, barely pliable, with abnormal fall or damaged by the use of chemical products and procedures. For this hair, the homemade mixture of fruit with other natural ingredients and its treatment mask may helpful to curb the excessive volume, prevent split ends, control the frizz and add more softness and shine.

On the other hand, you should always keep in mind that, like with any cosmetic product, the result should vary from hair to hair. But don’t worry, because there is no need to! Since the process is entirely done with natural ingredients, nothing can hurt your hair or cause side effects.
