Owing to legal restrictions on the use of a Virtual Private Network (VPN), Kaspersky Secure Connection cannot be installed in Belarus, China, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Oman, Pakistan and Qatar.

Kaspersky Free is installed to your computer in interactive mode using the Setup and Removal Wizard.

The Wizard consists of a series of pages (steps), which you can navigate through by clicking the Back and Next buttons. To close the Wizard after it finishes, click the Done button. To stop the Wizard's activity at any step of installation, close the Wizard window.

The number and sequence of steps in the Wizard depend on the region where you install the application. If you install the application in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Brazil, or as a California resident, the Wizard prompts you to accept additional agreements regarding how your personal data is processed, and to confirm that you are at least 16 years old.

To install Kaspersky Free on your computer,

run the executable file of the Setup and Uninstall Wizard downloaded from the Internet.

The application is then installed with the help of the Wizard.

Along with the application, plug-ins for browsers will be installed to ensure safe Internet browsing.

Kaspersky Free is installed together with the Kaspersky Secure Connection application intended for establishing a secure connection via Virtual Private Network (VPN). You can remove Kaspersky Secure Connection separately from Kaspersky Free. If the use of VPN is prohibited in your country, Kaspersky Secure Connection is not installed.

If your Android device isn’t getting updates, then the very least you can do is download and install a security app. But which one should you install?

Yesterday’s piece on “What should you do with an old Android smartphone” generated a lot of comments. Because I recommended installing a security app, one of the most popular questions was, predictably, which one?

ZDNet Recommends

A roundup of the best software and apps for Windows and Mac computers, as well as iOS and Android devices, to keep yourself safe from malware and viruses.

That’s a tough question.

It’s tough because testing security apps means throwing existing vulnerabilities at it, which doesn’t tell you how well it will handle future vulnerabilities. Another issue is that it’s impossible to gauge what kind of performance hit that the app will have across the myriad of devices out there.

So, this is what I suggest you do.

Try more than one.

Before I go any further, let me warn you that there are a lot of fake security apps out there. On top of that, there are ones that do little to nothing. Whether you go with something on this list or something different, I suggest you don’t venture away from the big names, the same names who were making security apps for Windows systems a decade ago.

Venturing too far off the beaten path could very well result in you installing the very same badware on your Android device that you are trying to avoid.

Here’s my list — it’s quite short — of recommended apps. There are three free apps here and one paid-for app. I’ve run all of them on a variety of devices and have been happy with the results.

Sophos Intercept X for Mobile

Price: Free

Why do I like this: No ads! That’s a rarity when it comes to free security apps. It’s not as flashy or whizz-bang as the other apps, but it has scored amazingly well in the AV-TEST testing and gets the job done.

Kaspersky Antivirus: Security, Virus Cleaner

Price: Free

Why do I like this: A solid, easy-to-use app. It does show ads, but I didn’t find them intrusive.

Avast Mobile Security

Price: Free

Why do I like this: Another app that got the job done. Again, it does show ads, but I didn’t find them intrusive. It also has features such as “Boost RAM” that you can play with.

Bitdefender Mobile Security & Antivirus

Price: $14.99 for the first year

Why do I like this: Gives you great protection from malware with the least impact on system performance (as tested by AV-TEST). My only gripe is that the VPN came with unlimited data rather than the 200MB/day, which feels low.

Quite a few people have asked me what VPN I use. It’s the same one I have been using for years, and none of the others I’ve tested has come close to it in terms of awesomeness.

F-Secure Freedome

Price: From $34.99 per year for 3 devices

Why do I like this: It’s fast, easy to use, and I’ve put terabytes through it across many countries without any problems at all.

Do you have a security app installed on your smartphone? If so, which one? Let me know in the comments down below.

How installing unknown apps works in various versions of Android, and why you shouldn’t do it.

How to install kaspersky antivirus on a smartphone

September 9, 2021

For Android users, installing applications from Google Play, and Google Play only, is the wise choice. With its strong safety rules, official app monitoring, plentiful user reviews, and security researcher scrutiny, Android’s official store tends to be a safe place for downloading apps. Even when malware does make it to Google Play, it is quickly identified and removed.

Android device owners do, however, also have the option to download and install apps from third-party sources. But does the freedom outweigh the danger?

Allowing or denying alternative installation

On the one hand, having the ability to shop outside of the Google Play store can be quite useful; not every app is available there. On the other hand, that freedom comes with an increased risk of infection, because outside of Google Play, apps lose Google’s quality and safety oversight.

Together with a program’s installer — or even instead of it — dangerous apps can get onto users’ devices and steal personal data, money, or both.

Here are just a few examples of such attacks:

  • A popular alternative app store was infected with a Trojan and began distributing malware;
  • Using the permission to install unknown applications, criminals distributed ransomware disguised as a beta version of a game called Cyberpunk 2077;
  • Other criminals passed off Loapi malware as an antivirus utility and an adult-content app. The Trojan turned smartphones into bots for DDoS attacks, made them mine cryptocurrency, or simply flooded them with ads.

The above represent a sampling of why new phones come with external software installation disabled. To avoid falling victim to schemes that rely on external installations, don’t be tempted to enable installation of unknown apps, and if you have, turn it off immediately. Here’s how.

How to turn off installation of unknown apps in Android 8 and later

In the latest versions of Android, the relevant feature is called Install unknown apps, and it is enabled separately for each app.

If you have allowed installation from unknown sources for some apps, you will need to disable it separately for each app. Here’s how to do it:

  • Open the system settings on your device;
  • Choose Apps and notifications;
  • Select Advanced and go to Special app access;
  • Select Install unknown apps;
  • Check what is listed under each app installed on your phone. If you see Allowed, select the app in the list and disable installation of unknown applications.

Please note, we’re using the names of the settings in stock Android. Manufacturers often modify the standard Android interface, so some menu items may have different names on your phone.

How to turn off installation from unknown sources in Android 7 and earlier

In Android 7 and earlier the setting is called Unknown sources, and there’s just one switch that turns installation of non-Google Play apps on or off for the entire system. Here’s how to find it:

  • Open the system settings on your device;
  • Go to Security;
  • Scroll down to Unknown sources and make sure it’s disabled.

At first glance, managing this setting seems much easier in older versions of Android, but from a security viewpoint, things aren’t that straightforward. If you accidentally allow installation of unknown apps in Android 6 or 7, then any app at all can download malicious files — and that includes apps you install later.

How to install kaspersky antivirus on a smartphone

We’re often asked whether its necessary to install an antivirus an Android smartphone, and with good reason. Apple has tried to discredit Android by presenting as a system infected with viruses and malware. The flaws that have come to the surface in recent years haven’t helped to reassure Android users. Those who have used their computer without an antivirus will be able to back this up: the results can be dramatic, except for those more knowledgeable users who can manage to escape unscathed. So, should you be suspicious of malware, viruses and Trojans of any kind on your Android device?

Are there risks if you don’t install an antivirus on your Android device?

Until now, very few Android devices have had viruses – at least if you compare them to the number of computers that have been infected with them. This doesn’t necessarily mean that an Android smartphone or tablet is invulnerable. Mobile web browsing has seen an unprecedented increase in virus activity, and we are already aware that any mobile internet browsing has risks. Recently, the danger of infection by a virus is more likely with Trojans like Obad which have quickly gained the reputation as the most dangerous virus that has ever been identified. It will not be the last.

Is Android more vulnerable than Apple’s iOS?

We often hear that Apple has no virus problems and that it’s not necessary to install an antivirus on Android. This is both true and false: Apple is a more closed system than Android, therefore it is much more difficult to enter the system to develop a virus. As a result, it’s logical that these virus developers opt to target Android’s open system. The intrinsic functioning of Android has it faults, and its these faults that are used by the viruses. That said, iPhone users are much less vigilant of viruses than other users but they are also vulnerable.

Is the Play Store a safe bet?

Yes and no. In theory, Google has deleted and forbidden any applications which contain viruses or spybots. Unfortunately, this filter isn’t foolproof: we saw it with the number of false versions of iFruit (GTA) to emerge when Android users were waiting for its release to their devices. The Google Play Store cannot be completely trusted. Some advice: before installing an application look at the number of downloads and the number of positive comments for the app, but also the authorizations. This is a good strategy for Android users to determine whether an app can be trusted.

That said, the new algorithm implemented by Google is now able to more efficiently filter the Play Store, that way users don’t encounter any nasty surprises. Again, be careful of what you download. Often a malicious virus can be hidden in an application that looks kosher, but it’s not. It’s important to check the name of the developer or the business that edited this application, as well as the number of downloads, comments and authorizations.

What is at risk if I find a virus?

The main risks aren’t very serious but they can be problematic for some: gathering your personal data and redistributing this information. That is best case scenario. You could also lose all your data, find an application that empties your battery or find yourself with corrupt files. If you consider the fact that our phones often contain much more personal information than our computers (phone numbers, email addresses, photos…), there’s no doubt that the risk of such an attack is much more dire for mobile devices.

How can a virus get onto my device?

Many everyday tasks can be dangerous for your Android device: from downloading an app to reading your emails or even by simply surfing the net. But its not all about the internet. It’s also possible for viruses to be transferred via Bluetooth or Infrared if you find yourself close to an infected device. This could happen when you’re out in public, at a friend’s place or even in your own home.

The distribution of viruses can be much quicker than on a computer, as we can carry this virus in our pockets everywhere we go. It’s advisable to regularly run a check with an antivirus.

What are the disadvantages of an antivirus on Android?

One of the main criticisms about antiviruses is that they play on fears about viruses, as they require full access to all user data on a device. Essentially, they do exactly the same thing as the viruses you are trying to avoid… and you need to have confidence in your antivirus. Some antiviruses are also energy intensive: they are always running in the background and are not always optimized for batteries. It’s often the price you’ll have to pay to be protected… Finally, an antivirus will not always be 100% effective. While some like Avast, Kaspersky or Lookout find 90% of viruses, others like McAfee will detect only a few of the dangers.

Which antivirus should I choose for Android?

This will largely depend on how you use your device, even if the overall protection and services offered by the antiviruses are the same. We recommend Avast Mobile Security & Antivirus, AVG Mobile (smartphone and tablet) or Avira Antivirus Security. Don’t forget that an antivirus that scans constantly will affect your battery life. You’ll probably need to adjust how you use your device or at least make sure that your antivirus isn’t too demanding. Don’t hesitate to try out a few different antiviruses to see which one works best for you.

Have you chosen to use an antivirus? If so, which one? Let us know in the comments below!
