Increase your chances of building a great relationship between your family and your child’s ABA teacher.

Avoid these common intake mistakes.

Bad experience

You know that a 3 year old is completely different from a 10 year old.

So why would you hire someone who has only worked with 3 year olds to work with your 10 year old?

Ask if your ABA tutor has experience working with the same age group as your child.

Working with different age groups is a steep learning curve.

Which brings me to the next point …

Assuming your ABA tutors know what they are doing

It may be tempting to hire an ABA tutor and think they will be able to take care of the entire ABA program.

Sure, it’ll cost you a lot less, especially if you’re short on resources.

This is a common mistake.

I see parents assume that an ABA tutor has extensive knowledge of creating a behavior plan.

However, in most cases, an ABA tutor is inexperienced in setting the program, even though he has worked with many other children.

To get the most out of their ABA teacher, they need tailored training and ongoing support.

Ideally, you should have a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) in charge of your child’s program and instruct him to train ABA tutors.

Location, location, location

I once took a job as an ABA tutor where I spent an hour in traffic to get to the orphanage for a 1.5 hour session.

At first it was fine. I enjoyed working with the baby.

After a few weeks, I realized it didn’t make sense.

Don’t make the same mistake.

Behavioral counselors / analysts are generally paid for the time they spend on the way home, but ABA tutors are not.

It is important to think about how this will affect the home therapy sessions.

When you hire an ABA tutor, make sure they are able to enter your home.

Do they live near your house?

Do you live on a route accessible by public transport?

Save yourself the headache.

Hire an ABA tutor with reliable transportation.

This will reduce the chances of your ABA tutor arriving late or worse, stop showing up for sessions.

The easier it is for an ABA tutor to enter your home, the more likely they are to stay with your child.

Future career plans

The first ABA tutor my cousin hired for her son was fantastic.

She was experienced and enthusiastic about her work.

But she only stayed on the team for 4 months.

So what happened?

Well, he decided to move on to a new career.

You see, many ABA tutors work with children as a temporary job.

Sure, you can tell them that you’re looking for a minimum 6 month or even a 1 year commitment. But that’s not going to keep a great ABA tutor working with your child.

There are some gold nuggets that will be more likely to stay as they are interested in a career in ABA or education.

How do you find these passionate people?

Ask about their future goals, short-term goals, or career goals during an interview.

Have they tried to raise their autism education? Maybe they’ve attended conferences or seminars.

If they seem interested in continuing their special needs education, that’s a good sign.

Depending on the severity of autism, someone on a spectrum can be successful in fulfilling their job responsibilities with only minor adjustments or coping strategies that go unnoticed by their peers. People with more severe autism, where they are nonverbal and have problems with social skills, have more limited job opportunities, but there are still jobs that may work well for this demographic.

Career options for people with autism

People with autism spectrum disorder have many unique skills and talents, although the traditional job search and interview process can make these skills difficult to shine. These people often have communication styles that are beyond the norm. They do not show the typical characteristics of the interlocutors such as outgoing personality, good eye contact and strong communication skills.

As a result, over 80% of adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are unemployed or in part-time jobs. Neurodiverse candidates are frequently observed because they do not present themselves in the usual way in formal interviews and are unable to effectively demonstrate their true skills.

Companies and programs such as Autism at Work seek to extend the standard interview process to allow for greater integration of neurodiversity in the workplace. SAP, for example, implemented the Autism at Work program in 2013. The company has been very successful internationally, hiring people on the spectrum and retaining 90% of those employees.

When companies adopt neurodiversity integration programs, they experience greater diversity and innovation in the workplace. Types of jobs typically suited to people with autism

When looking for a job, it’s important to look for positions that highlight your strengths, whether you have autism or not.

For people with autism, this means looking for a job that doesn’t require a high level of short-term working memory. People on the spectrum often have stronger long-term memory than a typical person, but struggle with tasks that require strong short-term memory.

Likewise, abstract thinking is usually difficult for people with autism. Instead, people with autism are better at clear and specific language.

This type of work requires a small amount of short-term memory and abstract thinking:

Autistic people can face significant challenges in employee navigation. Recent studies suggest that 20 percent of autistic adults are unemployed, while other estimates are much higher. These financial incentives are intended to encourage companies to hire workers with different skills and to offset any costs associated with their condition. Some autistic adults believe this is the best approach for autistic people to get and keep a job.

Which companies are friends with autism?

Many companies are now actively hiring people with autism. Software giant SAP has become a leader in hiring people with autism into the workforce. Aims to appreciate and support a variety of thinking and problem-solving forms. According to the company’s website, the program started in 2013 and has a 90% retention rate. The Galvin Therapy Center is currently seeking both full-time and part-time researchAutism therapists to support offices in Warrensville Heights, Ohio and Avon, Ohio. In this role, you will provide clinical skills, instruction and protocols at home / behavior reduction center to children with autism spectrum disorders.

Additional obligations:

  • Providing face-to-face care in a 1: 1 setting and / or in a group using a combination of the Denver Early Start model, environmental training, key response, verbal behavior, and other methods
  • Follow proper procedures when working with clients
  • Collect, record and summarize data on customer observable behavior while maintaining customer confidentiality
  • Collaborate with members of the therapy team
