The Flexible and Interoperable Data Transfer (FIT) protocol is designed specifically for the storing and sharing of data that originates from sport, fitness and health devices. The FIT protocol defines a set of data storage templates (FIT messages) that can be used to store information such as user profiles, activity data, courses, and workouts. It is specifically designed to be compact, interoperable and extensible.

The FIT file protocol was designed to provide:

  • Interoperability of device data across various platforms
  • Scalability from small embedded devices to cloud platforms
  • Forward compatibility, allowing the protocol to grow and retain existing functionality
  • Automated compatibility across platforms of different native endianness

The following example use case illustrates one way that the FIT protocol is used to transfer activity data acquired during exercise to a cloud platform.

  1. Sensors measure parameters such as heart rate, speed, pace, power, etc.
  2. Data is broadcast in real time, using low power ANT+ and Bluetooth protocols
  3. Session events and real time activity data is collected and saved into a FIT file on a display device
  4. The FIT file is transferred from the display device to desktop, mobile, or cloud platforms

After the initial sensor data is collected, the FIT protocol provides a consistent format allowing all devices in the subsequent chain to share and use the data.

Implementing FIT

Step 1: Download the FIT SDK. The SDK includes: example programs to Encode and Decode FIT files in many popular programming languages; sample .FIT files; and the FitCSVTool for converting FIT files back and forth to .csv files for testing.

Step 2: The FIT File Types guide describes the predefined FIT File types which consist of common message groupings and best practices for each file type.

Step 3: Explore the Cookbook and Example Projects for ways to use the FIT SDK in your application.

FIT SDK Resources

The FIT Profile

The FIT Profile (Profile.xls) lists all of the predefined FIT messages and FIT data types found in the FIT SDK. This document is useful for understanding the content and format of messages. Custom messages and files may also be generated for application specific cases. Profile.xlsx is updated with each release of the FIT SDK and is the most up-to-date and complete reference of the FIT Profile. Profile.xlsx is located at /path/to/fit/sdk/Profile.xlsx.

FIT CSV Tool

FitCSVTool is a command line tool used to convert binary FIT files to readable text files. Converting FIT files to text files may assist with the debugging of applications that encode or decode FIT files.

Cookbook

The FIT SDK Cookbook contains examples of using the FIT SDK to solve real world problems. There are recipes for encoding and decoding Activity, Workout, and Course files; and tips for working with the FIT SDK. The recipes are written in C#, but the concepts can be applied to the Java and C++ versions of the FIT SDK.

Example Projects

The FIT SDK includes Example Projects for each supported language. The example projects demonstrate how to incorporate the FIT SDK into Java, C#, C++, C, Swift, and Objective-C projects.

FitGen

FitGen.exe is a Windows command line tool that can be used to customize the FIT SDK. FitGen can be used to add custom messages to the FIT SDK, or to optimize the C SDK for use in embedded applications.

Rubber tiles are by far one of the most popular gym flooring options. You can choose between interlocking tiles, which look like puzzle pieces, or straight cut tiles, which look like squares in several thicknesses.

Interlocking tiles are very easy to install. Essentially, your floor becomes a giant puzzle and it’s your job to put the pieces together. Interlocking tiles are great over flat subfloors such as concrete or plywood, whereas 1” thick tiles are great over plush carpet or uneven surfaces. Whatever you choose, your floor will look virtually seamless and very professional.

Rubber Rolls

Rubber rolls are great for easily covering large areas. Available in several thicknesses, all of our rubber rolls are 4’ wide. For lateral movement exercises such as P90X or Insanity, rubber rolls are preferred. Lateral movements can move interlocking tiles, which can create a trip hazard working out. And no one wants that.

Rubber Mats

Rubber mats are typically used as temporary flooring surfaces in both commercial and residential spaces. Our mats come in several different sizes and thicknesses. They are great for anything from yoga to CrossFit. You will often see rubber mats in commercial gyms, and particularly in CrossFit gyms.

Soft Flooring

Our soft flooring consists of foam tiles great for many applications. These lightweight tiles are ideal for everything from home gyms to martial arts studios and simply fit together for an easy, no-hassle installation. All you have to do is decide what thickness level works for you and your gym floor.

Gym Turf

Gym turf or sports turf has been one of the biggest driving forces in creating spaces where you can vary up your workout regimen. From pulling or pushing sleds to conditioning drills, you can get a full-body workout on a surface that is durable and easy to maintain. With real grass, there are a lot of hurdles.

Gymnastics Mats

Gymnastics mats are great for very high impact training. Commonly used for gymnastics, wrestling, and tumbling, these mats come in different surfaces that are perfect for both residential and commercial spaces. Available with carpet and vinyl surfaces, gymnastics mats are there for you and your high-impact workout.

Carpet Topped Mats

Some mats feature a carpet top that is very popular with gymnastics and cheerleading. The carpet provides a soft surface for the students to tumble and gives a little extra traction.

Vinyl Topped Mats

Our vinyl topped mats do not harbor any bacteria, mold or mildew, making them great for wrestling. Easy to clean and sanitize, these are the preferred mats for this training style. Vinyl topped mats are also very durable and provide wrestlers with tons of shock absorbency.

Vinyl Wrapped Mats

Our vinyl wrapped mats are very durable and shock absorbent – great for cheer, gymnastics and wrestling. These mats work for home use and can be moved and stored easily. Since these mats are constructed of vinyl, they are also very sanitary and easy to clean.

If there is one person who thrives to be successful in all aspects of life, it is Usain Bolt. In a decorative athletic career, one for the ages, Bolt won eight gold medals at the Olympic Games. However, surprisingly, athletics was not his first love. An avid cricket lover, Bolt now wishes to play in the IPL someday.

Usain Bolt wants to play cricket

The legendary sprinter opened up on his decade-old love for the game. Growing up, Bolt was a huge fan of cricket and football. Having retired from the track and field back in 2017, Bolt now aims to get back in shape, in a hope of pursuing cricket professionally.

Addressing the same, the reporter asked Usain if he’d like to feature in the forthcoming edition of the Indian Premier League, starting next year.

With no kind of hesitance, Bolt said, “Definitely. I will get my training on. I’ll get fit and get ready. The two main sports in Jamaica at the time was actually was football and cricket. I was a massive fan of cricket because my dad was a fan of it. He watched it every day, every chance you get, you would watch all the teams play so I grew up watching cricket.”

Notably, back in the day, Bolt’s cricket coach pushed him towards the track, given his insane sprinting ability. Being a fast bowler, his coach saw potential in him and suggested he try out athletics instead of cricket.

Having drawn the curtain on an extensively decorated athletic career, an appearance in the IPL would only further build his legacy in the sporting world. And, of course, it would be a treat to watch for cricket fans all around the globe.

Bolt’s love for cricket

Back in the day, the West Indies were one of the best cricket teams in the world. With Sir Vivian Richards and Curtly Ambrose, they had some of the best players in the sport. However, as for Bolt, his love for cricket comes from his favorite bowler, Pakistani pacer, Waqar Younis.

“When I was really small I loved Pakistan cricket team. Waqar was one of the greatest Pakistan bowlers ever, and I was a bowler, so I really enjoyed watching him. I was a big Pakistan fan until I got older when I noticed that I should actually support my home team,” said Bolt.

Notably, Usain Bolt is also a huge fan of Indian cricket legend, Sachin Tendulkar. Whether or not he appears in the IPL remains to be seen. However, if he does make an appearance, he will take the league by a storm for sure.
