Getting a good night’s rest is one of the most important things we can do for overall health. But sometimes, even if we do everything right when it comes to getting our Zs, we still can’t hit those eight precious hours of rest and recovery. One of the most common culprits of lunges and turns in the middle of the night? Waking up hungry and not knowing how to suppress a rumbling belly.

Is it normal to wake up hungry in the middle of the night? The truth is that if you’re eating a balanced diet, hunger is normally its lowest throughout the night and first thing in the morning. So if you’re waking up hungry in the middle of the night, studies suggest that you’re likely not getting all the nutrients your body needs.

“Make sure you stop eating an hour or two before bed,” says Dr. Teoflio Lee-Chiong, sleep expert and principal medical liaison at Philips Sleep and Respiratory Care. “Eating before bed can disrupt sleep in those who don’t usually eat before bed, partly due to the discomfort associated with stomach function. People who usually eat before bed – for work or school reasons, for example – should eat in moderation and avoid large meals. “

Dr. Lee-Chiong recommends eating a high-protein snack 1-2 hours before bed, such as cottage cheese or yogurt with nuts, or half an apple with almond butter. “A high-protein diet is associated with better sleep quality, while high-fat diets can have a negative impact on total sleep time. Additionally, some studies have found that certain foods such as milk, cherries and kiwifruit have sleep-promoting effects: “You’ll find the best sleep food here.

Do you still wake up and want something to eat? Here are some healthy snack ideas you can take in the middle of the night to get back to your calm state.

Okay, this isn’t the most exciting snack option, but sometimes what we think of as hunger pangs are actually signs of dehydration. Drink a glass of water and wait a few minutes to see if your stomach gives way. Remember to stay hydrated all day to avoid waking up at night.

Two experts explain how (and why) you need to put the bars down after business hours.

Fighting late night cravings can be difficult. Your body is well suited to looking for unhealthy food during these evening snacks, but you don’t have to be tempted just because your body tells you it’s time for something unhealthy. We spoke to two nutritionists to find out what better alternatives you can have in place of this unhealthy midnight snack.

First, understand why the night becomes snack time.

If you’ve ever heard the old saying that craving is your body’s way of telling you which nutrient it’s missing, you’re not alone. Unfortunately, for chocolate lovers, this theory seems unfounded. “People always tell me that if they crave salt or sugar, it’s because their body needs this nutrient,” explains Ashley Shaw, dietician and prenatal and infant nutritionist at Preg APPETIT. “If you don’t have a blood sugar or blood pressure disorder, that’s very unlikely to happen.” Instead, what you want is a greater understanding of your daily diet. “When it comes to salt and sugar, we have tolerances that we build up over time based on our dietary habits (i. e. the more we eat, the more we crave),” she says. The only way to crave less unhealthy food is to eat less of it in your daily diet.

Everyone’s schedule is different, so how late you can safely snack without experiencing side effects like sleep interrupted by too much caffeine or sugar, weight gain from unburned calories, and even heartburn and indigestion that might keep you awake will be different for all . To avoid these complications, Shaw suggests eating the last meal or snack at least two hours before bed. So why go for these unhealthy snacks? Dr. Brooke Scheller, DCN, CNS and director of nutrition at Freshly offers the following alternatives to traditional snacks.

If you want chocolate …

Instead, get cocoa powder. Chocolate is usually overloaded with sugar – whether it’s a bar, ice cream, or other treats – but hunger can be a sign of a deficiency in magnesium, an important mineral found in chocolate. “Magnesium is a calming mineral that is actually used in some supplements before bed to help relax the nervous system and increase relaxation,” says Scheller. He suggests adding some cocoa powder to unsweetened almond milk. You can add some maple syrup and sprinkle with cinnamon to create a “healthy” cup of hot chocolate.

If you want something salty …

Opt for vegetables and hummus. Many Americans already have too much sodium in their diets, so Scheller recommends caution when choosing salty foods. “Instead, look for natural ways to consume small amounts of sodium to satisfy your hunger – vegetables like carrots and celery contain natural sodium that can help fill that void,” he says. “Combine them with a protein source like hummus or peanut butter to increase satiety.” He just remembers to avoid sauces, which can also contain high amounts of sugar.

If you want a sweet snack …

Get some fruit. Fresh fruit can be a great candy option. However, too much fruit can cause your blood sugar to rise (which can make you crave even more sweets). Combine fruit snacks with protein or healthy fats, Scheller suggests a handful of nuts or a scoop of almond butter to balance them.

If you want ice cream …

Make a “good” cream. Instead of eating traditional ice cream, you can try mixing a small amount of frozen banana, a spoonful of protein powder, and a spoonful of cocoa. “This” banana “ice cream will not only satisfy your sweet tooth, it will also provide protein to help balance blood sugar,” she says. “I also like to add a small amount of peanut butter and a few pieces of cocoa to the ‘chocolate cake’ rotation.

Here is a special appreciation for my man. He’s Mexican and he really missed his beloved inflatable amaranth, so he went on a mission to find him in Montreal.

He was nowhere to be found. Also in our Latin American shop where you can find almost all Latin American products. Luckily the health food store had raw amaranth so all we had to think about was how to puff amaranth. Which, by the way, turns out to be ridiculously easy. Even easier than making popcorn.

The best midnight snack of all time

La merenda di mezzanotte si ispira al famosissimo messicano"cheerfulness"Which are a type of candy sold in the form of chocolate bars. It is simply amaranth puffed with melted raw sugar and then left to solidify.

My husband, however, wanted to refine the recipe and give it his own style, so he added his favorite delicacies with puffed amaranth, nuts, dried fruit and …chocolate!

When I first tried his experiment, I begged him to let me publish the recipe on the blog. It’s the first recipe he’s ever developed probably and it’s a keeper for life.

Before going to bed, we often crave something sweet.

Most of the time we just get over it, go to bed and forget about it, but sometimes the craving is stronger than and having a healthy-ish alternative to plain chocolate is actually quite amazing.

Now let’s stop talking and go to the kitchen to have this out of this world midnight snack so it’s ready and done before midnight;)

Thanks for this great recipe. Instead, I used roasted pecans. A bit of coconut oil and a teaspoon of vanilla went into the melted chocolate, it made the chocolate thick, but still pliable. I had some extra cracked amaranth, so I squeezed it into the mixture until it melts. Proud!

Are there any other dice that would work just fine? Walnuts, pecans, almonds? That’s what I have at home.

PSA: don’t add frozen berries into the mix! 😄 the amaranth started to freeze before I took it out of the bowl and it ended up with a delicious lumpy lump. Next time I’ll either defrost the berries or just layer them on top. It was still very good!

Oh no. I don’t recommend adding fresh berries, only dried. Water doesn’t bind with chocolate.

Labeling food as rude can encourage a really bad relationship with food. It’s not something that promotes someone who is as health focused as you should be

First let me say that ive never been a chocolate lover and although cacao is grown here in the Philippines I am definitely not fond of the local chocolate. However, I thought I’d give these snacks a try as they are easy and are a good alternative to plain popped amaranth. Secondly, although my wife is a master at cooking Filipino food, she is not familiar with or struggles with basic cooking knowledge unless you help her. For this snack I forgot to do it (but with a surprise at the end).

After successfully completing the task of piercing the amaranth, she got carried away and found herself with just over 2/3 cup of pierced amaranth. So I told her to just double the chocolate (a mix of white and milk) and nuts (we used pecans) and make a double batch. Then, since I forgot to tell her how to melt chocolate using a double boiler, she just melted it in a saucepot and I think some of it burned. When she mixed everything together it ended up like very coarse beach sand and wouldn’t hold together. She was very nervous but I told her she was fine. I then tasted it and… I don’t know if it was the chocolate or if some of the amaranth burned but the taste was out of this world. Now, I actually like some foods burned (e. g., onions, popcorn, toast) so I could understand me liking this concoction, but my overly fussy stepson liked it too. It was placed in a plastic container lined with parchment paper and pressed into place and placed in the freezer. Although it still fell apart a little when sliced ​​or chewed, for our son and I it was fine for 1 day which lasted. Now I’m not sure if I want her to change anything when she makes it again.

I’m not a Pinterest fan at all. But I came across your puffed amaranth recipe. And I loved it, i knew it would be easy but didn’t realize HOW easy!
I, like your husband love amaranth and when I moved to the states when I was 12 years old and I couldn’t find frozen yogurt (which is now a thing in the states but had been a thing in Mexico 15 years ago) or amaranth I was devastated. I would ask my grandmother to bring some from Mexico whenever possible, and just last week she did it again. But I had recently found the raw version at a store the past month but couldn’t purchase it at the time, but now that I’ve found your recipe I won’t be afraid to buy it and puff it myself. It’s after 00:00 and you are watching TV or working on a presentation.

Suddenly you notice that your stomach is rumbling and you have a strong urge to eat (even if you had already had dinner a few hours ago!). You march straight into your kitchen and start raiding your refrigerator for anything you can find, whether its the remaining pasta or pizza that you had for dinner or some leftover chocolate cake that’s sitting in your refrigerator for the last 24 hours.

In other words, you are planning to demolish everything in sight! You take your edible loot back to the sofa or bed and start munching on glory. And this little midnight snacking ritual of your’s that started as an occasional, one-in-a-blue-moon stint, has lately become a regular habit. Next thing you know, you’ve put on extra weight and still feel confused as to what did you do wrong. The answer is straight in the face, but you can’t see and understand how. Read on to find out why.
You will get fat
Eating food in disguise at midnight is not healthy. That’s because whatever you’re pigging out on, and the subsequent calories that you consume along, does not get burnt out, simply because you are not immediately indulging in any physical activity besides sleeping. This will have you packing the pounds before you know it.

This is bad for the health of the teeth
Yes, it is true that a midnight snack is bad for your dental health. And it shouldn’t surprise you, since you never brush your teeth after a night of partying, especially if you eat sweets and desserts. Not only will you develop bad breath or bad breath, you may also end up with tooth decay over time.

It is bad for digestion
Eating delicious but very fattening foods, especially at midnight, can also have negative effects on the digestive system. Did you know that a human stomach digests an apple for about an hour and a half? Now think about the sandwiches, cookies, and chips you feast on. While the midnight snack seems calming to your taste buds, it does have a negative effect on your digestive system.
