How to finish concrete

How long does it take to get a new concrete slab before it can be acid stained?– gen

The concrete must be allowed to harden completely before coloring or finishing to allow excess water to evaporate from the slab. The instructions for most acid stains (as well as sealants and concrete coatings) say to wait at least 28 days after pouring the slab before finishing it, and some recommend up to 60 days. However, a lot depends on the consistency of the concrete and the weather conditions.

  • If the concrete mix was rigid and did not contain too much water, the temperature during and after casting the slab was over 20 ° C and there was little rain; you can stain it in just 18 days.
  • If the temperature was below 65 ° F, the concrete mix was soaked or it rained a lot, I would wait 30-45 days before coloring.

Good luck with your project,

Hi Danny, we just bought an old house with tile, carpet and laminate flooring. We like the look of the acid stained porch you showed on a recent show and wonder if we would be able to stain the old dish under these various coverings when we take them up? Would the process be the same as staining these new and/or outside areas?

I added to my home. I poured a concrete dish a couple of months ago. Now it’s all in the dry and my Sheetrock is up. I had to pour a small amount of quickrete (about half a bag) on the spot where my old back door sill was. Now it’s just a cased opening. How long should I wait before I stain this 6″x36″ section.

@Judy you should if your concrete is still in good shape you should go ahead and wash it with a water/muratic 4/1 mix and scrub it with a push broom. If the concrete has exposed aggerate (stones) showing. You might want to resurface it with a polymer concrete overlay.

@ Brad it’s ready. Quickrete will most likely stain a little different. Fair warning

our pool builder poured concrete around the pool and acid washed it the next day its cracking 2months later is it related thanks.
Tommy

On 11/5/14, we had a concrete dish poured and on the 7th, cuts were made in the concrete. After this was done all you could see was deep scratches due to some type of machine, wheel barrel tire marks, in addition to boot prints through out the dish. The contractor was sealed 8 or 3 days later. The dish is a mess of odd white spots all over with markings. It is too early to try to fix it. I had another contractor and he said we would have to fix it immediately before fully recovering. He suggested sanding,& acid wash then wait 28 days before doing the finish. It’s correct? I need an advice! Thank you.

I make a patio with a stone-like mold. I want to stain it when ready, do I have to etch new concrete and if so will it be possible to do that with this particular design?

I have a new concrete dish. Now I have to replace some poles that support the terrace, install a railing and replace some stairs. Should I acid stain prior to doing this work so that I do not have to worry about protecting much material, or should I stain after all the new materials are installed and painted to better protect the acid stain?

Description

Possible variety of finishes

One of the many advantages which concrete possesses is that by various kinds of manipulation a great variety of surface finish can be secured. Some of these finishes are made entirely to complete the work, while others are partially orchestrated during the selection of materials.

In small ornamental objects, colored sands are often used instead of ordinary aggregates and selected aggregates such as marble aggregates, screening granites, etc. materials selected in this way.

How to finish concrete

An example of rubbed finish showing a surface in which fine aggregate was used in the concrete surfacing mixture.

Leaving the surface produced by the forms

The simplest form of surface finish that can be given to concrete is that secured by properly placing the material in well-made forms and spading the concrete next to form faces so that coarse particles will not be exposed on the surface. However, this surface finish is quite monotonous. The only color it has is almost entirely due to the concrete. The sand does not alter the color of the surface much as the surface of the sand particles is covered with a layer of concrete. If the molds have been well made, the only treatment necessary to obtain such a surface is to patch up small spots or imperfections caused by coarse aggregates not completely expelled from the face of the mold. These imperfections should be filled with a mortar of the same proportions of cement and sand as the mortar of the concrete, and rubbed smooth and even with the general surface of the object by using a wood float. If the entire surface of the object is covered in this way, a fairly good finish can be achieved at a low cost. The surface will be as smooth as the forms against which the concrete is placed, and if the concrete was properly proportioned, the surface will also be dense and watertight. Treated lumber will provide a smooth surface finish if the molds are firmly joined so that the sand-cement mortar cannot flow into the joints, thus creating ridges or seams on the surface. If the surface finish is to depend on the molds themselves, metal or metal-coated molds are the best surface.

How to finish concrete

Combination of sawn and treated surfaces. This is a little piece of concrete bridge ornamentation.

Cement and water car wash

Another method of finishing a concrete surface consists of painting the concrete with a cement wash, usually consisting of 1 part cement and 1 part fine sand, mixed with water to form a paint. It is applied with a brush after removing the molds. It fills the pores and covers the small irregularities and veins of the wooden shapes, giving a smooth surface with a uniform finish and a uniform color. However, it is likely to break and break the hair and sometimes come off in some places, if not completely. For this reason, it is not a reliable surface finish.

“Floating” With Stone or Wood Float.-There are several other methods of after treatment which in general are as follows: Forms are removed as soon as the concrete has hardened sufficiently to be self-sustaining, or to permit handling the object if reasonable care is used. Ridges caused by joints in forms are carefully chipped off, the concrete surface is thoroughly wet, and rubbed with a carborundum block, the surface being kept wet constantly while so rubbed. Another method of scrubbing the surface is to use a trowel or wooden spatula. The surface should be rinsed well with water during rubbing and washed thoroughly after rubbing is finished. The earlier the surface is scrubbed after removing the mold, the better the results. In other words, the concrete should be rather “green” (not hard). Lo sfregamento rimuove la maggior parte delle irregolarità, riempie i pori e i piccoli vuoti e conferisce alla superficie una finitura e un aspetto uniformi. This treatment is resistant to pitting and fouling, which often occurs when painting over a cement-water paint or mortar, as it is also called.

Although there are many types of substrates that you can have – like gypsum, wood, or steel – one of the most common for floors is concrete. Podłogi concreteowe są stosunkowo niedrogie i mogą wytrzymać dużą odporność na ciepło i uderzenia. Because it is such a popular substrate, and has its own set of flaws, a good concrete coating is the perfect way to ensure that your structure lasts as long as possible.

There are a number of concrete coating products that are vital when considering a primarily concrete construction project. Each concrete coating product meets a different need and supports the longevity of your building in a unique way. Epoxy, polyurethane, MMA and polyaspartic concrete coatings each have their own strengths and weaknesses, but all support concrete substrate in unique ways. For example, urethane concrete floor coating is excellent for stopping moisture from leaking through concrete walls. On the other hand, a fiber-reinforced epoxy concrete floor coating gives a harder finish that strengthens and supports concrete.

Even though each compound has different characteristics, the application process for a concrete floor coating is similar regardless of the specific product you choose. Some of the most popular applications are:

Farba do podłóg concreteowych

Farba do posadzek concreteowych to prosty sposób na radzenie sobie z wilgocią i pokrycie najpilniejszych problemów. Since painted concrete floors usually have compounds applied very thinly, they will not mitigate advanced problems like crumbling or damaged concrete. Farba do posadzek concreteowych również musi być regularnie ponownie nakładana, zwykle co 6-12 miesięcy.

Another problem is the cost. Concrete floor paint is inexpensive, but doesn’t provide the impact or heat resistance of a more long-term solution. A painted concrete floor is not able to perform well under very high traffic or consistent abrasion, either. In fact, a painted concrete floor may cost more in the long run than more durable solutions like concrete floor sealer or fluid applied flooring.

Uszczelniacz do podłóg concreteowych

The next level of protection for concrete is a sealant. A concrete floor sealer provides an additional level of strength and support for the underlying concrete. Uszczelniacz do posadzek concreteowych występuje w różnych mieszankach i może mieć grubość do ¼ cala. This means that your concrete floor sealer will do what you need it to, whether your focus is flexibility, bacterial resistance, impact resistance, or heat resistance.

The concrete floor sealant also fills and mitigates damaged or crumbling concrete. By creating a thick concrete seal between cracking or crumbling substrate, the concrete floor sealant actually strengthens the structure as if the flaw was never there. And, since a concrete seal is thicker than a concrete paint, it also smooths the surface, so the imperfection is functionally erased. The concrete seal ensures that the floor or wall stands strong and repels water, heat, or bacteria for years.

Wykończenia podłóg concreteowych

The final layer of a complete concrete wall or flooring system is the finish. The concrete floor finish is a layer that is applied on top of a primer or sealant level to give the final floor more durability and beauty. In good concrete floor finishes, the floor will look smooth and provide the perfect levels of flexibility and strength necessary for your building. Some of the most popular choices for concrete floor finishes are epoxy, polyurethane, and polyaspartic compounds.

Liquid applied floors

In areas where easy cleaning is essential, such as industrial kitchens or cage washing machines, a liquid-applied floor is the best choice. In fluid applied flooring, the concrete is cleaned and then covered in a multi-component compound with an epoxy, isocyanate, or acrylic base. Fluid applied flooring can be applied to other substrates like wood or metal, but most commonly with concrete.

A good finisher is created thanks to training and many years of experience. Books have already been written on this subject, and only experience allows the finishing operations to be skilfully “templated”.

To give you a head start, here are some final tips from the pros:

  • Place the concrete as close as possible to its final destination (concrete weighs approximately 150 pounds per cubic foot).
  • Excessive handling can cause segregation of layers and fine aggregates.
  • Wetting up the concrete so it can be raked or pushed into a location far from where it is discharged is not acceptable.
  • Do not use a round edge shovel for spreading concrete since it does not spread the concrete evenly.
  • “Strikeoff” or screed the concrete as close as possible to its final plane.
  • Don’t tamp high slump concrete.
  • The bull swim must be completed before excessive moisture or water leakage occurs. When floating, lift the leading edge slightly off the concrete surface.
  • Don’t fresno the dish right after screeding – bleedwater and air trapped beneath the sealed surface will create blisters that later break or a weakened plane that causes sheet delamination.
  • Dont finish the concrete while there is bleedwater on the surface. Using a finishing tool while there is water on the surface increase water-cement ratio by working the water back into the concrete instead of letting it evaporate. This can cause dust, flaking and cracking.

Have you ever seen a sidewalk poured with new concrete and watched someone finish the concrete? You probably didn’t pay a lot of attention but you noticed someone down on their hands and knees with a trowel moving around the concrete surface. Like anything someone else experienced, it seemed easy. Guess what? It’s not that easy unless you have done some homework. So take this as your first lesson. If you haven’t done this before or only done it, a few times you are likely to make two mistakes; too early and too much mashing. Both have the effect of attracting particles and water to the surface. This can cause surface weakening, fine cracks, and a white, dusty surface. After thoroughly mixing the concrete, pour it into the forms slightly overfilling them. Then take a straight board (a 2×4 piece of lumber works great as long as it isn’t bowed) and simply level off the concrete.

Using a board that is longer than your pour is wide and using a sawing motion work back and forthuntil the concrete is level. You really need someone on the other side to help you with this side. This is called “leveling” if you are trying to learn new words that you can impress your friends with. Then, with a wooden trowel or magnesium trowel, sand the surface if you want an ornament. This should only take a few minutes. Don’t try to turn it into a masterpiece, leave it in an art class. This step is simply to put a relatively smooth surface on the concrete. When you’re done, clean out the mixer and tools and grab something to drink. Keep an eye on the concrete. The first thing you will notice is that some of the spilled water will flow to the surface. This is a good thing. Let all the water disappear before doing anything else. This could take 20 minutes or 4 hours depending on the temperature, humidity and wind strength. After all the rain water has disappeared, you can remove the steel finishing trowel and apply the last few cuts. You will notice that the steel spatula is not perfectly flat. Thats done so that when you trowel you will be more prone to lift the leading edge slightly avoiding digging into the concrete.

Even following my exceptional instructions, it is doubtful that your surface will look professional. As I said in the beginning, using a trowel isn’t all that easy. However, most of us are good with a broom. If your mother brought you up right, you’ve had lots of practice. Once you are done with the trowel, simply grab a soft broom and gently drag it across the surface. Always pull the broom (never push) and always go in the same direction. One step is enough. I personally prefer a broom finish as it makes the surface a bit rougher. This is very useful in situations where the flooring is wet. The rubbed surface is very slippery. Unless your brother-in-law is a really good lawyer, you don’t want someone take a tumble on your property. Besides this way everyone will think you really knew what you doing and you wouldn’t have to tell them about the broom trick.

Don’t stop reading yet or you will miss one very important point. You need to “cure” the concrete. If the concrete isn’t kept moist for a few days it may crack. The problem is that the surface will dry out while the bottom is still wet causing tension, which basically tears the concrete apart. There are several ways to cure concrete. It is easiest to spray it very lightly with a hose. You can cover it with a damp cloth such as burlap (do not let the cloth dry out). You can also use chemical hardeners such as Sakrete Cure `n Seal. The question of how long and how often is difficult as it depends on the temperature, humidity and air flow. The warmer, drier and windier it is, the more water will have to be poured again.

There are basic steps and procedure needs to be followed in pouring concrete. You can also use a foam brush approximately 2 inches wide by 508 cm.

How to finish concrete

QUIKRETE has a useful video and accompanying project instructions for anyone interested in learning how to finish concrete or as a refresher for those who haven’t done such a project recently.

The following project instructions accompany the video and provide more detail on how to finish concrete. Remember that when working with cement-based products always wear protective eyewear and waterproof gloves.

Step 1 – Prior to placing concrete forms:

  • Build a module out of 2 × 4 or 2 × 6 lumber and secure it with wooden dowels and deck screws.
  • Excavate the dish area to a depth of about seven inches, allowing three inches for a gravel base and four inches for concrete.

Step 2 – Check the modules for level (1/4 inch for every 12 feet is enough to let the rain flow out). The shapes of the terrace and the pavement must be uniformly inclined with respect to the structure.

Step 3 –Evenly distribute the QUIKRETE all-purpose gravel three to four inches, then even out the gravel.

Step 4 – Dab the gravel base with a rammer. TIP: A solid sub-base will help prevent erosion and dish settling.

Step 5 –Moisten the gravel substrate with a garden hose to avoid shrinkage cracks, especially at high temperatures.

Step 6 – Pour the concrete mix in evenly placed leads; the top of the concrete mounds should be about two to three inches above the forms before leveling.

Step 7 – Consolidate and distribute the concrete evenly using a hoe. The surface of the concrete should be relatively flat and slightly above the form.

Step 8 – Screed the concrete using a straight 2×4 by moving the board back and forth across the surface of the concrete in a sawing motion to remove the excess concrete and smooth the surface.

Step 9 – Add concrete to any low areas and screed level.

Step 10 – Once the concrete has lost its sheen, smooth the concrete surface using a wood float in an arching motion. NOTE: Use a stiff bristled broom for a non-slip finish (all broom movements must be done in the same direction).

Step 11 – Cut in control joints using a groover and straight-edge (a four-inch thick dish will require control joints a minimum of every 10 feet in each direction). NOTE: control joints should be cut a minimum of ¼ the depth of the dish.

Step 12 – Use an edging tool to consolidate and shape the edges of the dish. Several passes are required in each direction for a smooth finish.

Step 13 – Freshly placed concrete should be water cured for a minimum of three to five days with a fine water mist. TIP: water curing can be eliminated by applying QUIKRETE Acrylic Concrete Cure & Seal immediately after finishing the concrete. Acrylic Cure & Seal can be applied with a roller, garden sprayer or a brush.

Because concrete countertops are made from scratch, you can choose from a wide range of finishes, from mirror smooth to stone-like textures. In some cases, the surface of the form itself imparts the finish, with its texture reproduced in the concrete. Another option is to trowel the concrete surface, which allows you to create unique hand-crafted textural effects. If you want to achieve an ultra-smooth, seamless surface, then polishing or sanding the concrete after it’s cast is the best approach. Polishing can also be used to expose decorative aggregate, glass, or stone within the concrete, resulting in terrazzo-like finishes. Here are examples and design ideas for all the different finishing techniques.

Marbleized or Veined FinishThere are several ways to make concrete countertops look like high-end granite or marble. Some specialized prepackaged concrete mixes allow you to achieve distinctive veining effects when the concrete is cast. Similar effects can be achieved by hand packing the concrete into the form, using contrasting colors to create the veining. Veined finishes can also be produced by casting voids into the concrete and then filling them in later with colored grout.

  • To create the realism of natural stone, cast the concrete in an integral color and then apply acid stain in layers to the top surface.
  • Vary the pigments and the degree of marbling for one-of-a-kind custom pieces.
  • If the tabletop has seams, you can make them smaller by hiding them in the veins.

Wood-Grained FinishWood-grained finishes can easily be achieved in concrete by using a technique called “board forming,” which involves casting the concrete in forms lined with real wood planking or wood-grained form liners. The roughness of the unfinished wood imparts a distinct wood-grain texture in the concrete surface.

  • For the most realism possible, give the edges of the countertop a wood grain texture by using strips of wood slats or textured bark along the edges as you pour.
  • To create distinct board lines, you can sawcut straight lines into the concrete surface after it’s cast.
  • Use a combination of integral color and topical stains to replicate the realistic color variations of weathered wood.

Hand-Troweled FinishHand troweling the countertop surface rather than casting it against a form allows you to create a variety of textural effects, ranging from smooth to roughened. These finishes often resemble natural stone because they are more varied and have greater texture depth.

  • If you want to recreate a rough stone-like texture along the edge of your countertop, commercial edges with carved stone-like textures are available.
  • Apply a low-gloss or penetrating paint to the countertop surface to maintain a natural look. Avoid glossy finishes.
  • Choose organic and muted colors such as natural gray, brown or sandy beige.

Polished or Sanded FinishPolishing or sanding concrete countertop surfaces after they’re cast results in a smooth, flawless finish. The gloss level can vary from low to very high gloss depending on the degree of polish.

  • For shiny, ultra-smooth surfaces, remove the one-piece countertop to eliminate seams.
  • For the look of white marble or porcelain, use a titanium-white concrete mix containing white silica sand.
  • For a more natural, low-luster finish, hand sand the concrete or only polish the surface lightly.

Exposed-Aggregate FinishSome of the most unique and dramatic concrete countertop finishes can be created by exposing the aggregate. The process begins by seeding the concrete countertop mix with pieces of decorative colored stone or glass. After pouring the tabletop, moving the coffee grinder across the surface will reveal the aggregate and give it a noble shine. Special luminescent aggregates are also available for nighttime dramas that absorb and store natural and artificial light.

  • Customize the look according to your design preferences using different types and sizes of decorative aggregates. Options include pieces of recycled glass, decorative stone, pieces of marble, broken tiles, and shells.
  • The exposed aggregate will be more noticeable if it contrasts with the concrete color, such as using bits of white marble in a charcoal-gray countertop.
  • To enhance the jewel brilliance of the visible aggregate, seal the surface with glossy varnish.

The concrete is a versatile construction material used all over the world for all types of construction applications. Il concrete nella sua forma verde può essere modellato in qualsiasi forma, dimensione e finitura con una varietà di tecniche e attrezzature di finitura per ottenere una superficie bella e durevole con un alto valore estetico.

The most basic type of concrete finish is a smooth surface created through the use of screeds and trowels.

Rodzaje wykończeń concreteu

1. Smudged finish

Trowel finish is the most common and popular finish of concrete used for major types of applications. After the concrete is laid in the formwork and leveled, the trowel is used to smooth and fine-level the surface of concrete.

The spatulas are available in both manual and mechanical versions. A manual trowel consists of a flat steel blade with an attached handle that is pushed and pulled across the concrete surface.

A mechanized trowel is used for large commercial projects which resemble large fans with the blades sitting directly against the concrete.

2. Refine the broom

The broom finish of the concrete is rough textured finished obtained by dragging a broom on the trowelled surface of the concrete while the concrete is still fresh.

Dragging of broom on the fresh concrete surfaces creates small ridges that provide for traction control and slip-resistant.

3. Tłoczone wykończenie concreteu

The stamped concrete finish is obtained by pressing the required patterns on the freshly levelled concrete. This type of concrete finish after completion of their construction looks similar to stones such as slates or flagstones, brick, tile or with proper skill they can look similar to wood.

Stamped concrete finish is a very intelligent and innovative innovation in concrete widely applied for floor in patios, car porch, driveways and sidewalks.

4. Salty finish

The salt finish concrete surface is obtained by inserting coarse rock salt crystals using rollers on the freshly placed concrete surface and washing it off with streams of water after the concrete is set.

This finish gives a decorative, rough subtle texture and skid resistance to plain or colored concrete. It is mainly used for swimming pools or other wet areas.

5. Visible aggregate finish

The construction of exposed concrete finish is to have leveled concrete floor surface, distribute aggregate evenly, and keep air voids to as minimum as possible.

Power Floater or Diamond Polisher is used to polish the top surface of the partially cured concrete. The equipment removes a concrete layer whose thickness does not exceed a few millimeters at the top of the concrete. A fine-grained protective layer is applied to provide the glossy finish of your choice.

6. Vortex finish

Swirl finish is one of the most exceptional types of concrete finish that is generated by smearing the concrete surface in a uniformly overlapping circular pattern.

It provides an aesthetically pleasing appearance to the concrete surface which is favored for outdoor applications because not only does it add beauty to the surface, but it also provides a safer walk and stand in comparison with smooth surface finish, specifically during the wet season.

7. Glossy finish

The polished finish on a concrete surface is achieved by a mechanical process of grinding and polishing with the help of a penetrant chemical to provide different texture with the help of specialized tools and equipment.

8. Colored finish

The colored finish of the concrete is accomplished through mix-added pigments or post-cure staining to provide a pleasing look to match the surrounding environment.

The colored finish on a concrete surface can be carried out by either pigment or strains. The pigmented colored concrete can be accomplished by adding the pigments directly to the concrete mix prior to pouring.

The strained colored concrete can be obtained by applying stains to concrete of any age to obtain a more vibrant colored finish. The application of stain is typically followed up with the installation of a seal over the concrete to protect the surface.
