BIOS stands for “Basic Input / Output System”. This software checks the hardware status of your computer and allows you to start Windows. When the computer is turned on, the BIOS performs a Power On Self Test (POST) to make sure that the computer hardware (hard drive, sound card, keyboard, etc.) is connected and functioning correctly. If the test finds no problems, the BIOS transfers control of the computer to other software, usually the operating system.

Every computer has a BIOS, and you may need to log into yours from time to time. Within the BIOS, you can set a password, manage hardware, and change the boot sequence. The BIOS user interface is simple and easy to access, but be careful when navigating the BIOS – don’t change the settings unless you know what they’re doing.

Step by step: entering the BIOS

1. Get ready to act quickly: You have to start the computer and press a key on the keyboard before the BIOS gives control to Windows. You only have a few seconds to complete this step.

2. Restart (or restart) your computer: Pay close attention to the first screen that appears. Look for a message indicating which key to press to enter the BIOS. This key will likely be:

–A function key (such asF,F, orrF)

On this PC, press F to enter the BIOS setup menu.

On some PCs, entering the BIOS may require pressing another keyoa key combination. Keep your eyes peeled for an on-screen message that says something like:

– ‘press F to enter configuration’

– ‘BIOS settings: Esc’

– ‘System configuration: F’

If you don’t get it the first time, just try again. Your computer’s documentation may also tell you which key to press.

3. When you know the right key, restart your computer and press the key when the first screen appears: You can hear a confirmation tone or view a new message. If you timed correctly, you will be in the BIOS within seconds.

Additional tips

Remember, don’t make any changes unless you’ve done your homework. For some ideas on how to increase the speed of the BIOS, see “Make your PC start up faster with these BIOS changes”.

Keep your BIOS up to date. The BIOS update process is quick and easy. Make a note of the existing BIOS version and check the support section of your computer manufacturer’s website for updates. For a step-by-step guide, read “How to update the BIOS”.
