In-Person and Virtual: Female students auditioning for a Ballet program should wear a black leotard, pink/skin tone tights, and pink/skin tone ballet slippers. Students en pointe should bring their pointe shoes. Boys wear black tights, black or white ballet slippers, and a black or white fitted t-shirt.
Jazz & Contemporary Auditions
In-Person and Virtual: Students auditioning for a Jazz & Contemporary program should wear a black leotard and either tights or shorts. Bring both ballet slippers, jazz shoes, or jazz sneakers.
Musical Theater Auditions
In-Person and Virtual: Students auditioning for a Musical Theater program should already be warmed up and stretched before the audition. Be ready to dance! Also, come prepared to sing 16 bars of music from a musical. You may choose any music you like. You will be singing your selection a cappella. There is no need to worry too much about the song choice. If you must, you may sing the national anthem, or your favorite Disney tune, and show that you are ready to perform. Please dress in any dance-appropriate attire that the dancer will feel comfortable moving in. A jazz shoe or jazz sneaker will be appropriate.
In-Person and Virtual: Please wear black sweatpants or hip-hop pants with a t-shirt, tank top, or dance top (no jeans). Please wear jazz shoes, black dance sneakers (hip hop shoes), or NEW sneakers used for dance only. No loose or hanging jewelry.
In-Person and Virtual: Please wear a black leotard and tights. Make sure to bring your tap shoes. Boys wear black tights or jazz pants and a black or white fitted t-shirt.

Actors of all ages, looks, shapes and sizes are necessary to help brands and companies sell and promote their products. Doing television commercials can be lucrative for actors and open doors to bigger roles. You do not have to be a professional actor or model to audition for a TV commercial, but having a little experience in front of the camera is a plus. Start by preparing properly for the audition. Then, give the casting director energy, excitement, and variety so you book the job.
The annual Hal Leonard Vocal Competition was founded in 2011 to encourage young singers from all over United States and Canada, from children through college undergraduates. Thousands of singers have participated in the competition, with top placing videos from 35 states and provinces, and over 40 colleges and universities. The Hal Leonard Vocal Competition was one of the first music competitions held entirely on YouTube.
We hope the 2022 Hal Leonard Vocal Competition can be a rewarding project for all participants to experience growth, community, and enrichment. The competition offers a thread of connection between all singers who enter, by seeing and hearing their peers online.
Unlike almost every other music competition, there is no entry fee in the Hal Leonard Vocal Competition. We deliberately want young singers from any location in North America to be able to enter, without the expense of travel to an audition site. And singers can view and hear on YouTube others from around the U.S. and Canada who are in their own age group. Voice teachers have told us that it is instructive to hear hundreds of singers from other studios.
It is important to us to encourage the study of art song as well as musical theatre, with four age categories for each:
- Children, 12 and under
- Early Teens, 13-15
- High School, 16-18
- College Undergraduates/Young Adults, 18-23
We are certainly proud of all the participants in the competition. We follow with special interest former first place winner Samantha Hankey, a 2018 Richard Tucker Career Grant winner, Jack Swanson, who is singing lead roles at Los Angeles Opera and Santa Fe Opera, and Kathryn Henry, who has premiered new roles with the Santa Fe Opera.

Charlotte Ballet will participate in the National Summer Intensive Audition Tour by holding an audition in Charlotte on February 6 and by viewing virtual auditions held at the following locations; Oklahoma City Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, Sarasota Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Texas Ballet Theater, The Sacramento Ballet, Colorado Ballet, Nashville Ballet, Philadelphia Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Louisville Ballet, and BalletMet.
Charlotte Ballet will also review recorded audition class footage from the Regional Summer Intensive Auditions in St. Louis, MO.
2022 DVD/VIDEO AUDITION
Charlotte Ballet is able to accept pre-recorded video auditions which will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Video auditions should be no longer than 10 minutes in length and must include a live introduction with name, age, years of study, and current place of study. Video should have center work including adagio, petite allegro, grand allegro, pirouettes (en dehors and en dedans), and pointe work for women. Men should include tour en l’air and allegro that includes beats and pirouettes.

Please note: If you do not pre-register for an audition, make sure you bring all of these items to the audition hard copy.
Pre-registration is highly encouraged, but not required. Check-in opens 30 minutes prior to the audition class for each age group. The audition will consist of an hour and 15-minute ballet class, for which a non-refundable audition fee will be charged. All female dancers are required to bring pointe shoes. Please note that at least one year of pointe training is required for all female dancers for acceptance into the Summer Intensive. All female dancers, Level 1 – Level 4, are required to take daily pointe technique classes.
The audition class is conducted like a master class; there will be no early cuts. The audition class will consist of barre, center, and pointe work for the women. Men should expect tours en l’air and allegro that includes beats and pirouettes. Parents are not allowed to observe the audition class.
AUDITION DRESS CODE
Ladies should wear a solid colored leotard, pink or flesh-tone ballet tights with hair pulled neatly away from the face. Please bring both your flat and pointe shoes. Class will begin in your flat shoes, so please have your pointe shoes ready once the class moves off the barre.
Men should wear black tights and a white fitted t-shirt or leotard with black or white ballet shoes.
AUDITION CLASS AGE GROUPS
Audition classes are broken down by age. The younger age group, and typically the first audition class, is for 11 – 15 year old dancers. The older class is for 16 – 22 year old dancers. If you are on the 15/16 age cusp, please take the audition class of the 11 – 15 year old dancers. The judges have your birthdate and age on your audition forms, and will know that you will be 16 by the time the Summer Intensive begins.
At certain locations, age groups may be combined into one large master class. Combinations will be given according to proficiency level. No matter what class you attend, the judges will be able to place you in the appropriate Summer Intensive level.
Dancers will receive their audition results two to three weeks after the audition via email. No results will be given over the phone, and no individual audition results/critiques will be discussed. Merit scholarships are awarded to the dancer at the time of acceptance. Please make sure to list the email address you check most frequently on the audition form for the quickest response time! You will receive registration information at the time of acceptance. All spaces in the program are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
We are excited to begin casting for another amazing season of The Voice! Since all casting for the Voice will be done through Video Submissions or Virtual Open Calls, we wanted to give you some tips to create your best video audition!
These are tips you should follow when recording a video audition for a Video Submission and/or participating in one of the Virtual Open Call Auditions. If you’re planning to audition for a Virtual Open Call, make sure you also read the Virtual Open Call Guidelines.
- Most Important! Be yourself! Each artist is unique and has their own style let that shine through in your video submission.
- Choose a cover song that best represents you as an artist and matches your vocal and performance style.
- Dress to impress! Wear what you would wear if you were to land a “Blind Audition.”
- Remember to have fun! Show us your personality and energy. We want to see you PERFORM!
- You may sing to a track, accompany yourself on an instrument or have someone else accompany you.
- Please use a high quality recording device such as a camera, MAC, PC, iPhone or an Android Galaxy Smartphone.
- If you do not have a mic, make sure your recording device is close enough to get clear clean audio.
- If you are using recording equipment, please avoid overly using reverb, compression, tuning/vocal enhancers. We want to hear you, not an edited version of you.
- Be sure to record your performance video in a place with minimal sounds and distractions (e.g. unexpected sounds like dog barking, baby crying, or loud neighbors). We don’t need any visual effects, props, or anything that would distract from your performance.
- Test your sound and video. Can you be heard clearly? Is the sound distorted? Maybe you’re too close or too far from the microphone. Adjust and test again.
- Natural Reverb – We all love a room with reverb/echo, but it can sometimes be too much. If it sounds like you’re in a cave, rethink the space.
- Please record in a clean & clear location (e.g., no dirty dishes, laundry, or unmade beds behind you). Your roommate or family member should NOT be on the couch eating chips or watching TV while you are recording your audition.
- Make sure you are well-lit, especially on your face (lamps or natural light work best). Make sure the light is in front of you. DO NOT HAVE LIGHTING BEHIND YOU.
- Make sure you frame the camera so we have a full view of your performance. Don’t cut off your head, put the camera too close, or with a view up your nose. Make sure the camera is in focus.

We are well and truly living in the superhero era and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon. Do you want to don the tights and cape? Keen to swing from skyscrapers? Race around the world? Save Gotham? Earn millions of dollars? Be on every child’s bedroom wall? Here’s our practical and down to earth advice for how to get cast in a Marvel film.
Disclaimer: this will NOT be easy.
Another disclaimer: There is a role for everyone in Marvel films, but the competition is steep. Put it this way, you wont be playing Batman if you don’t have a six-pack. Or Wonder Woman without a figure that looks great in a miniskirt. That being said, the industry is now forced to be more aware of diversity when casting, and we’re seeing a wonderful shift in superhero blockbusters. We’ve got Shang Chi in development, which will feature a predominantly Asian cast, as well as Black Panther with a predominantly black ensemble. As well as a bunch of new and interesting characters, played by some very talented actors who we may not have seen in superhero films 10 years ago.
That being said, the movie business is a pretty superficial industry. And unfortunately, good looks, comedy skills and a public image will be a huge advantage.
So before you start sending cold emails to Marvel, you need to take a few things into mind.
We bang on A LOT about training here at StageMilk.com – but there’s a reason for it. If you do not have solid acting skills, you will not have a career. And practicing Marvel monologues in your bedroom doesn’t count. If you’re serious about wanting to become an actor, and one of your goals is to play a superhero – you better get training. Malcolm Gladwell coined the term “the 10,000 hour rule” – and we reference it a lot here. As a musician, would you expect to audition for the national symphony, and get in, without having done hours and hours of practice on your instrument? Or win the Olympics for 100m sprint, with only 3 months training behind you? OF COURSE NOT! Acting is no different. Actors should train hard and work hard, and then never stop training.
First impressions are everything in the entertainment industry, and it’s imperative that you turn up for each opportunity prepared and with confidence. It’s a nerve-wracking experience and you want to walk into that room and do the best job you possibly can.
What are the steps you need to take in order to build that confidence and amplify your skills? Do you need to do more research, learn more about the casting process, work on your US Accent, do more training, go to drama school? If you’re reading this article and you’re still in high school and never been to an audition in your entire life – I recommend you build some experience first, before aiming straight for the big guns! Sign up for acting classes, read plays, read scripts, go to casting workshops – do whatever you need to do so you feel MORE than ready when you walk into that audition room. When you are ready, the opportunities will come, I promise you.
#2 The Actor’s Toolkit
In order to be considered a professional actor in this industry, you need to get the goods:
You won’t be even considered for a Marvel audition without these things under your belt.
#3 Know who you are!
Okay great, you’ve got a killer showreel, a captivating headshot, a nice looking resume and an agent. What next?
Know you who are and what you have to offer the industry. What do you play towards? What can you uniquely offer to this film?
Once you’ve specified this, dress the part. And don’t be afraid with making strong costume choices for your audition. Comic book films rely on a colourful and large visual aspect, so give them exactly that in your audition. You will find that your costume will aid you in your choices and give the scenes a larger than life quality, which is exactly what they’re looking for. Be careful on covering up your face – they still need to see you – but a strong character and costume choice will go a long way in impressing the casting agent. This doesn’t mean renting a cape, but feel free to wear bold colours, tight clothes or something that hints at character.
Going hard for the hero? Hit the gym. There’s no secret in saying all superheroes need to look physically impressive. A specific mass-building training regime together with a strict diet over several months is your only option here. However there are ways of looking bigger in the room than you are in reality. There is a perception that casting agents despise actors doing pushups before they shoot – this is probably true – so do them in the toilets right before you go in. It may seem silly, but pumping out 100 pushups will jack your glamour muscles, get your blood pumping and will make you look ripped through a tight t-shirt. It’s a technique that works, just be a little sneaky and refrain from doing it in the room.
Watch the films! All these recent superhero films (besides a few) have a very similar tone and rhythm. Get familiar with it. Know who the writer is, director and cinematographer and watch their films. Playing a scene naturally is not always the answer. Within the superhero world the stakes are unusually high, decisions and choices are frequently life or death – underplaying these scenes will not always work to your advantage.
It’s also helpful to research the filmmakers who bring these action films to life. Who writes Marvel films? Who directs them? Who casts them? It’s great to have a handle on how the Marvel world operates, so you can have some ownership over your audition.
#5 Nail your American accent
Characters in these films are usually speaking with a general American accent – be extremely comfortable with this dialect. If a casting director spots a drop in the accent they could check out and cross you off the list straight away. Whatever your process is – make sure your accent is solid and comfortable that you can take direction without the accent being an issue. You shouldn’t be worrying about the dialect when you walk into the audition room. It should already be there.
Finally – leave everything you have in that room. Absolutely go for it. Superheroes need to be strong, passionate, courageous and confident in their own skin. You have the fate of the world in your hands – you are not the actor this film needs, but the actor it deserves.

International Audition Pre-Selection Guidelines (IAP Guidelines)
An applicant is required to submit the following material only:
- a video with no introduction or fancy editing, consisting of the following performed in leotard and tights for women, and tight-fitting dance attire for men:
- two classical variations drawn from the standard repertoire, danced in pointe shoes by female applicants
- a short contemporary variation (that could consist of something drawn from the repertoire, phrases from classwork, or an applicant-created work) that illustrates the applicant’s command of a range of movement different from that demonstrated in the classical variation
- 3-5 minutes of barre work, incorporating both sides, danced in soft shoes by male applicants and pointe shoes by female applicants
- 3-5 minutes of center work that includes adagio, pirouettes, petit and grand allegro, danced in pointe shoes by female applicants

However, like many players in the industry, Pike’s rise to the top was by no means an easy feat. The journey had a lot of obstacles on its path alongside challenging moments. In many instances, the actor faced some tough decisions to go against her values to get a role.
One of such was her audition for the Bond girl in Pierce Brosnan’s “Die Another Day.” Among the many requirements needed for the audition, it had an added need that she never expected.

Rosamund Pike Disapproved Of The Stripping Rule
The “Hostile” actress was just a 21-year-old newbie with almost no acting experience during the audition. When it was her turn to try out, she realized that the audition required her to undress for the part.
“My first audition was for a Bond film, and I remember them saying I was to drop my dress and appear in my underwear,” Pike noted to The Hollywood Reporter.
While it might be weird to strip down for the role, several scenes in most “James Bond” movies require the femme fatale to go unclad a bit. One could assume that the producers needed her to get comfortable with such scenes.
However, the actress rejected the request, not wanting her bare body bandied around in video copies. For her, she would rather be judged with her clothes on than off. Ultimately, the impasse ended with a truce. Pike switched the gown she wore for scanty clothing offered by the costume designer to audition for the role.
Rosamund Pike Felt Unprepared For The Role
Most starlets who audition for parts in blockbuster flicks are often scared by the enormity of embodying the role. It could lead to an arduous audition process for the production team as many contenders are likely to bomb it.
According to Yahoo Movies, Pike described herself in such a similar way. To her, she was as naïve as they come.
“I was the most naïve candidate at the time that I did [‘Die Another Day’],” she said. “I had no agenda. I didn’t know what I was doing. I just went in and saw a character. That’s all I saw was a character, and I played that character in the audition.
After the audition, Pike landed the role, and the rest is history. Since then, she rose steadily to the top, appearing in subsequent box office hits.
Pike Disliked The Attention That Came With The Bond Girl Role
“Die Another Day” was an epic hit in the cinemas. The 2002 spy film smashed the previous records and became the highest-grossing James Bond film, making more profits than the previous nineteen installments.
Despite its financial success, the movie received some negative reviews from critics and fans alike. Many even considered it to be the worst entry in James Bond’s franchise. However, the mixed reception did not dampen Pike’s growing fame after the film’s premiere.
Although the role helped open more acting doors, the actress admitted she was unhappy with the attention she got from it.
At a point, she got accosted by teenage boys who kept gesticulating at her and asking if she was a Bond girl. As reported by Empire, she found the entire ordeal annoying and unpleasant.
Pike Had A Difficult Time Kissing Pierce Brosnan On Set
Diehard fans of earlier James Bond films are familiar with the usual setup of sizzling erotic scenes blended into the movie. As expected, David Brosnan and Pike shared a couple of kisses as required by their roles.
Reflecting on sexual scenes, Pike might have found the moment as pretty bland. To buttress her point, she compared the moment with another from the set of “Fracture.”

“I’m filming a smaller independent film called Fracture, and I have to kiss a fabulous actor called Ryan Gosling. He’s a great kisser – it’s so different from my first on-screen kiss with Pierce,” Pike disclosed at the time, per Empire.
From her statement, fans might think that her relationship with the Bond star was on eggshells. Contrary to the assumption, the pair shared a close relationship on the set, with Brosnan particularly helping her learn the ropes of being a Bond girl.

Have you ever received an invitation to a special event that calls for semi-formal attire? Are you unsure of what that means? If so, you're not alone.
What Is Semi-Formal Attire?
Semi-formal attire is an outfit that is dressier than what you'd wear to an office but not as dressy as a formal evening gown or tuxedo. If the event is held in the evening (after 6 p.m.), the semi-formal guidelines lean more toward the formal than if it were held during the day.
Semi-formal attire is typically worn to weddings, holiday parties, and to fine restaurants. Some teen and pre-teen dances are designated semi-formal.
If you receive an invitation that states semi-formal as the required or preferred style of dress, you have a wide range of choices. It fits somewhere between casual and formal, so you might need to clarify specifically what is meant if you aren’t sure. There’s nothing wrong with contacting the host to ask for more specific information. Now would be a great time to offer to give a toast!

Feminine Semi-Formal Wear
There are quite a few options for feminine semi-formal attire. This may include dresses, separates, or a pantsuit in a dressy fabric, such as silk, cashmere, or satin.
A dress or dressy suit with a dressy top, with heels, strappy sandals, flats, or dress shoes may also be worn. Sparkling gemstones, pearls, and dressy fashion jewelry are all appropriate. However, be careful not to overdo it, or you'll look more like you're in costume than semi-formal wear.
Masculine Semi-Formal Wear
Masculine semi-formal attire could be a conservative dark suit with a dress shirt. A vest that matches the suit is optional. In most cases, a tie should be worn, but in some cases, it isn’t necessary.
If in doubt, wear a tie. You can always take it off later. A belt that matches dress shoes and dark socks are essential. Subtle jewelry is appropriate.
Feminine Semi-Formal Wear for Teens and Pre-Teens
Age and type of event help to determine what is appropriate for semi-formal attire. Some of events that might require feminine semi-formal attire might include a bar or bat mitzvah, dance, holiday party, sweet sixteen, or prom.
Semi-formal clothes for a middle school dance may include a short dress with sequins at the neckline or all-over glitter. If the dress has a lot of sparkles, wear less shiny jewelry so it doesn't compete. For a dress that isn't shiny, add sparkling rhinestone jewelry for a more festive look.
Someone in high school might choose a more fitted or off-shoulder dress for their special occasion. Before you go shopping, make sure you know what is allowed at the event. Some schools may have a dress code that prohibits plunging necklines, strapless dresses or tops, and high slits at the hem.
Masculine Semi-Formal Wear for Teens and Pre-Teens
Masculine semi-formal looks for teens are similar to what adults would wear to a semi-formal event. Start with a nice pair of dress pants, a button-front shirt, a tie, and a jacket. Or you can wear a dark suit. You may even be able to wear a lighter suit to daytime summer events. Complete the ensemble with a pair of dark dress shoes (dressy loafers, oxfords, or lace-up shoes). Always wear socks to a semi-formal event.
Semi-formal occasions call for good grooming. Make sure you are clean, your hair is combed, and your nails are clean. Tuck in your shirt and make sure your tie hangs at the right level. If you need help, most adults will be happy to give you some assistance with the tie.
Many weddings call for guests to wear semi-formal attire. You want to look your best, but you don’t want to upstage the bride, so avoid white or off-white. A cocktail dress is generally your best bet for most semi-formal weddings. You may also wear a dressy pantsuit with heels and sparkly jewelry. If in doubt, there is nothing wrong with talking to the bride or someone in the bridal party to prevent committing a faux pas.
If the wedding is outdoors, you may wear a maxi-dress with strappy or embellished sandals that are appropriate for walking on the sand. Heels might get stuck in the grass or sand and make walking difficult, so if you aren’t sure, ask someone in the wedding party where the ceremony will take place. Carry a shrug, scarf, or shawl in case a cool breeze blows through.
It could be an interview or audition, or you might be asked to provide examples of your work – maybe a portfolio or an essay.
Finding out more about you is an ideal way for them to see if you’d be a good fit for the course.
- If they do send you an invitation, it could either be sent to you directly, or through your UCAS application. It’s best to contact the uni or college to find out how and where you will receive information about your interview.
- Universities and colleges say it can be difficult to change the times and dates of interviews, so if possible, try to go at the suggested time.
- If you can’t attend at the allotted time, you need to let the university or college know as soon as possible. If you received your interview decision through UCAS, the option to request a different time will be available. If you received the interview decision in another way, get in touch with the uni/college. When you’ve agreed a new date, they’ll either update the invitation in your application or contact you directly to let you know.
Then after you’ve attended, they’ll tell us when they’ve made a decision and we’ll let you know. Once all decisions are in, you can reply to your offers.
Interviews aren’t everyone’s favourite thing, but with a bit of preparation you can do well.
They’ll be looking for enthusiastic students with lots to offer – someone who can work independently and consider new ideas, someone who will thrive, enjoying a varied academic life alongside outside interests.

In the laugh-out-loud video, Holly and the on-set makeup artist appeared to be stuck at the nail as a mishap involving very strong glue had them stuck together.
Holly said: "It's like a renaissance painting, and we actually can't get a part," until finally being broken free with the aid of solution.
