Use our quick tricks and shortcuts to organize and organize your drawers in a purposeful way that will help keep clutter out of the way.

When it comes to organizing drawers, the drawer organizer insert is your best friend. The compartments and sections of these handy inserts are essential for storing small items. Take a close look at what you need to store and consider the smaller boxes in the main organizer to customize your drawer. For example, if you’re tidying up an office drawer, use smaller bins for paper clips, pins, and binder clips. If you can customize drawer organizers to fit specific items, not only will you maximize your drawer space, but you’ll also create a specific home for each item, making it easier to find and store those items.

Taking time to declutter dresser drawers and closets is a big and usually daunting challenge–there’s no way to sugar coat it! Most of us have too many clothes and it’s difficult to part with items with sentimental value.

When I made a big purge of old clothes after my daughter was born, it was tough to give up some of my pre-baby clothing that didn’t fit anymore or had seen better days. To take the excitement off a bit, I found a way to get rid of these clothes. If there were any shirts or pants I wasn’t ready to part with, I turned the hanger backward in the closet as a visual prompt. If and when I was actually wearing this garment, I turned the hanger. After a few months, if any hangers were still overdue, I donated or sold this garment. My wardrobe is drastically smaller and the rest of the things are what I wear and I really like!

Dnce I finished my clothing declutter, I knew it was time to do the same with my husband’s clothing. But every time I tried, something would come up and I’d hastily rearrange everything he owned to make it work with my clothing in our shared master closet. I made sure we both had enough space for all of our clothes, and since he has more t-shirts and folded things, I gave him more drawers in our dresser in the hope he would keep it tidy.

Well, It didn’t go so great! Within weeks, his shirts were completely disorganized, creating a giant pile in a drawer. And somehow this gigantic pile has earned some t-shirts to keep in a completely separate drawer! None of his sweatpants returned to the dresser once they were put on and washed. And his sock drawer has lost its color coding system. Can we say #organationalfail ?!

How to clean a dresser drawer

In our home, those who do the laundry have the decisive voice in organizing wardrobes and drawers. I do my husband’s laundry, so that puts me in charge! It also means that when my kids are old enough to do laundry themselves, they are responsible for organizing their clothes. This organized mom asked no questions!

So it’s time to try a completely different organizational system for these drawers. I have no idea if it will last, but it doesn’t hurt to try.

Step 1: Empty the dresser drawers

Start by emptying all the drawers in the dresser. For example, she throws everything on the floor or bed and avoids feeling overwhelmed. If you want, arrange the drawers. For this project I decided to leave the drawers as they are.

Step 2: Sort the clothes

So order all the clothes. Put your clothes on batteries: save, give away, throw away and sell.

Once all clothes have been sorted, remove donations, trash and sell piles from your space. Leave only the clothes you are holding. If possible, keep large plastic containers in the garage or bathroom, especially for donation and sale. When you’re working on a project, put your things in those baskets. When you see that the basket is full, put it in the car and take it to the local donation center. This is the most efficient method of collecting and donating that I’ve found over the years!

Step 3: Classify the clothing

Divide all other clothes into fleece. For example, all socks fit together, all shirts fit together, and all long sleeved shirts fit together. Classifying your clothes will make it easier to store things. Just stack them up so you can visually see how many items you have from a particular category. Make sure you have every piece of clothing you want to put in this drawer to make sure everything fits perfectly.

Step 4: Fold your clothes

Then fold all your clothes. For this project, I presented some dresses based on the suggestions of Marie Kondo, the author Life changing cleaning magic. He suggests folding your clothes to see everything you have in the drawer. She starts by placing the shirt face down. She folds a third of the shirt over you. Fold the other third of the shirt over you. Then fold the shirt into three parts.

Step 6: Designate and set aside

Designate a drawer for each of your categories. For example, you should have a sock drawer, a shirt drawer and a trouser drawer. I love to separate my clothing categories so that nothing gets confused with another type of clothing. It makes it easier to find and archive things.

Start putting all classified folded clothes into designated drawers. I love using drawer organizers in projects like this – the honeycomb sock organizer and these cedar adjustable drawer organizers are great when it comes to storing socks and shirts.

Advice for professionals:

Color-coded items are a great way to easily see what you have and help identify which items of clothing you may need based on color. There are two ways to color-code your items in drawers: first is to mix all your different clothing categories (i. e. all blue t-shirts and pants) together in a color-coded manner. Another way is to divide all the clothes into sub-categories and label them that way with color. All the shirts would be color coded in your drawer. Then we move on to color-coded long-sleeved shirts. Both ways are great options, just pick the one that’s right for you.

After a couple of weeks with this method, one thing isn’t working as well as I hoped. When we start putting on the clothes, the rows begin to fall out of their nice vertically folded position. I hope that this won’t end up creating more of a mess in the drawers than before, so we just have to wait and see! I’ll update you in a couple of weeks. Meanwhile thumbs up!

Five simple steps to clean up the trash.

While trash drawers are usually found in the kitchen, bedroom or garage, they can be anywhere in your home. Basically any “universal” drawer is called a trash can. It’s that go-to drawer when you need to get something out of the way and don’t really know where it goes.

The problem with trash drawers is that they get too cluttered over time, which becomes a problem when you have to rummage around for the things you want.

You can definitely save yourself the hassle and frustration!

Getting clutter out of a drawer isn’t easy, so it’s worth doing it step by step.

Here are the steps to clean your trash can!

Starting from the beginning

The first rule of clearing up a mess is knowing which object goes and where. You’ll need two things for this:

  • Boxes or bags to sort things out; signals Put away, Baskets, Donate, Keep in a drawer
  • A list of essentials in the area you are cleaning up. These “must-haves” are things that are directly related to a certain area. If you’re in the garage, for example, this would contain only tools and similar implements. In the bedroom, these are likely personal items. If you have a junk drawer in the hallway by the front door, you’re likely noting the things you need to pick up when you’re heading out.

Once done, you are ready to clean!

A step by step guide to cleaning your garbage can

  1. Get it all out. If you can, remove the drawer itself from the runner and turn it upside down! Put all items in a temporary container.
  2. Clean the drawer itself. You can clean it with a disinfectant or cleaning solution of your choice. This is important: it will probably be quite dirty. At least scrub away the little spots you see. At the most you’ll have to remove mold and other debris – even a mistake or two!

If you’re not using the item regularly, or you use it in a totally different location, find a new home for it. Start evaluating your articles, starting with the list of essentials you created earlier.
  5. The things that are overdue are the ones that are absolutely necessary in your trash can. Clean them if necessary. Depending on how long they’ve been sitting there, some of them might require repairs (or just a good deal of wiping down).

After cleaning the trash

After following all the steps above, you have most likely created some extra space in the trash. Woot!

You could also make good use of the space.

By learning how to throw litter in the trash can, you may also learn how to throw litter in your immediate vicinity. In short, some objects come out of the drawer and there are objects that fall inside.

Put items on the surrounding shelves or other nearby surface and think about which one is best to put in the drawer.

This is a big step towards minimalism.

A different way of thinking

It’s one thing to clean a drawer, it’s another to tidy it up.

The problem of an overflowing trash can will keep coming back unless your habits change.

The secret to keeping a bulky drawer is to define tough rules on what it should contain. Yes, it’s still mostly junk, but make sure it’s useful junk, not the things that you simply want to keep out of sight. It’s easy to just put things somewhere without thinking when you are in a hurry. If you define the rules by which an article goes where, it is less likely to get into this situation.

Finally, it doesn’t hurt to check the trash can every now and then.

You may schedule time (say once a quarter) where you’ll take an hour or so to go through your drawer and make sure it’s not collecting unnecessary stuff. The great thing is, once you’re done with the basic steps outlined here on how to declutter a junk drawer, keeping the drawer under control will be much easier.

Divide the drawers into different sections

Dividing drawers is a great and effective way to organize things. Divide the drawers into several compartments of different sizes and assign each of them to a specific type of thing. You can make separate compartments with the help of a rack, which is easy to find in sawmills. Just stick them on or use your fingernails to secure them in place. Store different items in different sized sections. A no-cost solution is to use a cardboard divider for a bottle of wine or any box of spirits.

The drawers used to store the baby’s clothes must be well organized so that you can find the right thing at the right time. Use ornament boxes to keep your baby’s clothes organized because they can store loads of things while take relatively less space. Choose a large drawer in your wardrobe to save your clothes. Dra put the gift boxes in this drawer, roll up overalls, dresses, socks, bibs and even blankets and store them in different boxes. It will save you time when dressing your child.

Fold your clothes, save space

Clothes like t-shirts, shirts and scarves can make a real mess and take up a lot of space if not organized. If you like to wear any or all of these outfits, this simple trick will save your life! First roll up your sleeves, fold the shirts in three and place them in rows. It will clean the previously occupied space almost three times. On the other hand, keep scarves and ties tidy by using PVC pipes. Just cut the tubes according to the height of the drawer, then insert the shawls and ties.

Trays for small items

Trays are a great option for storing smaller items that usually slide and make a real mess in drawers. Use ice cube trays to store smaller items and use open weave cutlery trays to group similar items together. Use foil containers or pill bottles to hold paper clips, thumbtacks, and similar small items.

Like you, I have tried many times to tidy up my trash can, but it always sinks into chaos.

I have found that there is one thing that is essential if you want to keep your trash drawer tidy:

Regardless of the type of organizer used, it must reach the top of the drawer.The point is, it needs to be the same height as the drawer (or slightly lower).

If you get your hands on kitchen organizers intended for cooking utensils, they are usually not tall enough. So what happens are objects pouring from one container or section to another. After three days, no one can tell what to go where and people just throw things everywhere.

But if you get (or create) tall, deep containers or compartments, items won’t fall into adjacent compartments.

Let me show you how I tamper with my garbage can.

I decided to make my own dividers using the bottom of the cereal and cracker boxes.

First I measured the height of the sides of the drawer and then I trimmed the boxes to the same height.

What an original idea for organizing a drawer. It will work in the bathroom or in the top drawer of a dresser, where you will empty your pockets before going to sleep! Let the ideas come!

Yup! It would work great in many different drawers! Glad you thought about it!

You may want to turn over a minimalist leaf, or you may just be Looking for a great way to declutter your clothing closets and drawers. After we moved, I was with you. But the KonMari Method wasn’t going to work for me because I wasn’t in a place where I could make that big of a change that quickly.

I love the KonMari method. I think Marie Kondo is a cleaning genius. I’ve read everything Courtney Carver writes about minimalism and order. Joshua Becker Rocks and The Minimalists (aka Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus) are so compelling that I’ve seen the documentary on Netflix at least five times. I’m sold on how damaging “fast fashion” is, and I’m a minimalist because I never want to consume mindlessly.

But even after saying all of that, I have to tell you that the KonMari method did not work for my closet right away, and as a freelancer, the Project 333 approach spearheaded by Courtney Carver didn’t seem to fit my closet decluttering needs. I wasn’t ready for them. I had to take baby steps before something could “ignite the joy” or end up in my basic wardrobe.

How to declutter your drawersI was pretty sure that I would never be that woman or that I would never have her wardrobe, mainly because I would never be that age again and I would live in an industrial loft with a white infinity screen behind a coat rack that reflects nothing in the my life.

What’s your style?
Before you start pulling all your clothes out of the closet and creating a top on your bed, think about what you really want from your wardrobe in the future. I quit my job in a corporate law firm to work as a travel writer, author and freelance screenwriter. Very little in my new life will require dresses, pencil skirts (I still love them) or an endless supply of pants. I didn’t have a style goal (in other words, I didn’t have a particular icon that inspired me that was also realistic for my day-to-day life), but I knew I needed a change. Where did I land? I’ve always been a little preppy. Every now and then I find myself in a nice balance between preppy and hip, but most of the time I lean on the preppy. This was the case when I had company checks, and it still is today. Dnce I committed to what Look I wanted, it felt easier to start sorting through my stuff.

The picture above is what my closet Looked like after we moved into a place with closets built in 1929. I don’t understand why the two clothing rods in a row ever made sense because you have to walk through one packed rack of clothing to get to another one. I suppose the second wand was probably inserted later as a concession to the ever-increasing consumption of clothes in America, but it was a pain in the ass from the start. And, weirdly, that reinforced my desire to pull out stuff that wasn’t serving my needs.

Did I get everything out of the closet at this point? No. There are things you just know that will never suit you again. You know some things have never really Looked good on you (and those are often the things stuffed in the very back of the closet anyway). You know there are items you’ve received as gifts that still have tags you’ve never worn but hate guilt. You know some things cost you a lot of money to buy, and you don’t want to donate them because… well, they cost a lot of money and there might be guilt there, too. It was all true to me. So the first round was about bringing out the things I already knew in my heart weren’t the things I miss. Did I pass them right away? No. I put them in two large bags and put them in the closet in front. I figured that if in six months I hadn’t thought or needed anything in those bags that I was free to move on.

I did it in two stages. Never entered the bags for any of the items. So when time ran out, I split them into things I was about to sell (see my notes on ThredUp here) and things I was about to pass on. And I didn’t Look back.

Note: Don’t feel bound by the six-month number. In the case of people living in places with dramatically different seasons, this time can be shortened or extended as needed. I can wear summer clothes in LA for about 9 months a year, so my weeds had to reflect that.

It’s time to rethink my clothes to fit them. This is not as easy as Looking at a tag and seeing a size. It seems that each brand chooses the size of their clothes differently and uses the numbers as dark clues based on horoscope rather than rigorous science. It was time to try on the things that I didn’t wear often, but for some reason loved. This created another pile of things that didn’t fit correctly. I put them back in the bag and waited a few months to see if this training plan I had put in place was starting to work or if it had promising results. When I reopened the bag, some clothes fit me better, but in some cases the cuts didn’t fit my body, regardless of size. At this point it was much easier to physically remove them as I had already mentally disposed of them when I put them in the bag.

I was ready for the merger of KonMari and Courtney Carver. I was able to pull it all out and make a real assessment if I want to take these items with me in the future. I knew what I needed and what I wanted, so creating a basic wardrobe was a lot easier. It is not about believing that I will always have enough and that is why I could just list everything. It was actually about knowing my needs.With the same attitude, I easily went from wardrobe to drawers and cedar chest of drawers (for the winter).

Did I finish cleaning? I’m close. I’ve got the KonMari folding method down in my drawers (and it absolutely works), and my closet is now only one filled clothing rod, even with the winter sweaters out (it has been surprisingly cold in LA). But cleaning and tidying is an ongoing process. I always want to be aware and grateful for what I have and for what I get. In terms of creating my core wardrobe, I’m working on it. Project 333 may still be a reality for me.

My friend Jessamy (one of life’s hoarders) scoffed when I said I was getting a professional declutterer to come to my house. Because the truth is, I’m not, by nature, a messy person. I like tidying and get a bit anxious, in fact, if there’s too much clutter about. And so, whenever the house got a bit messy, with overflowing wardrobes or crammed-full bookshelves, I would have a fun purging afternoon, either sending unwanted items to the charity shop, selling on eBay or listing on Freecycle (it’s amazing what people will take: I’ve got rid of bags of soil and old paving slabs).

I wasn’t one of my fellow countrywomen who allegedly hoard £10 billion worth of clothes that we never wear because, with only one shared small wardrobe between me and my husband, I’d regularly weed out any clothes that didn’t fit or Looked tatty, and pass them on.

But then I had a baby. Suddenly, my neatly tidy house fills up with kids’ trash (not piles of tasteful wooden toys as I had anticipated, but the weird effects of Amazon Prime stunts in the middle of the night). Now that I work from home, I have to Look at it all day – and frankly I’m too knackered to clear it all up properly. So I hide it in cabinets and drawers. From being a declutterer to the point of living monastically (and occasionally even chucking out my husband’s possessions, unsanctioned), I now have a house full of drawers that barely close.

I’ve let my tidiness slip and I only have one child, who can’t even walk unaided yet. I feel like I need help now before we turn into one of those families you read about who have to climb over their house to get to the front door.

“It’s a very tidy house,” says Helen Sanderson, a professional organizer, almost disappointed when she walked into my house. But when she starts pulling everything out of my big kitchen dresser, putting what she finds on the table in front of me, she changes her mind. “Actually, you’ve got a lot of stuff in here …”

For another client, who had recently been through a divorce and was still coming to terms with it and struggling to throw things away, “we laid everything out that was to do with her marriage, lit some candles, Looked at the items and talked about it all. By comparison, my problem seems embarrassingly mundane. Or so it is, until Sanderson analyzes me: “You have a shell of order; it’s how you present yourself to the world, that you’re efficient and organised. But inside you feel chaotic. The problem with clutter is that it represents something else, so every time you walk into that room it reminds you that you’re failing at something. And even though yours is all behind closed doors, every time you come into the kitchen you know that you’ve got to sort out those cupboards. That little voice is so exhausting.

Phew, I wasn’t quite expecting to be psychoanalysed; I just wanted to clean up a little. The problem with my kitchen, she identifies, is that “you’re asking one room to do a lot”. It’s true. It’s not only where we prepare and eat food, but it’s my office and the playroom too: I trip over my daughter’s walker almost daily.

So let’s start with what she calls weeding: having fun. Around me, Sanderson laid out the cards from his kit with the instructions: “keep”, “recycle”, “trash”, “donate”, “sell”, “move” and “act”, which means that something requires. something. or invoice requires payment. Sitting at the table with Sanderson driving my things, I have to decide what to do with each item he places in front of me. He’ll soon fill two garbage bags and a bag for donations or sales.

I haven’t moved – Sanderson has done all the lifting – but it’s oddly exhausting. Soon I’m left with a giant pile on the table of “keeps”. It’s tempting to think that, as I’ve chucked lots out already, my job is done. “At this point people get bored or tired if they’re on their own,” she says, “but this is what I call the plant planning stage; it’s where we decide where to put things so that you know exactly where everything is next time.”

The trick, he says, is to keep a drawer or cupboard for a job. Then assign the top right drawer as my stationery drawer; a cabinet below for children’s books; on the shelf is a grid full of art material. She collects my ribbons and gift tags and puts them in a large, clear, resealable bag.

“Maintaining order in space means keeping things matching,” he says. It does the same with my electric cables, first sorting them in camera, phone and headphone chargers.

She finds an attractive box and puts in a small pile of things that I’ve allocated as memories: an order of service; a friend’s baby announcement card; I photograph. “But you don’t need to keep every thank-you note or birthday card,” she says, weeding out my pile.

It’s taken two hours (yes, one cupboard!) and we’re racing towards the finish line. Sanderson takes out my rubbish and my bag of donations and all that’s left on the table is my box of “action” items. “This is your job,” he says as he prepares to leave. I find my enthusiasm on the weekend. Say goodbye to ugly wardrobe (£ 55 on eBay), changing mat (free on Freecycle) and too-small blazer (£ 70, Vestiaire Collective), plus a bag of old cloths and pillow cases at the textile bank. There’s loads more I could chuck or sell, but I have to hold myself back a bit. After all, we need some things.
