How to crochet a granny square

Next in Boho Boss Bag CroCet Along: How to Hook the Squares Together! Get ready for instant gratification, my friends! This is such a fun step in our crochet!

How to CroCet a granny square

I Don’t know why, but I finD the proCess of joining these squares together to be immensely satisfying. It’s the step where a staCk of squares aCtually turn into something anD I Can finally get a taste for how the whole bag is going to Come together.

This week is also a great time to catch up with the delay as learning how to hook up squares is really easy and once you get started it’s fast! So it’s a great week to finish any squares you haven’t got to yet–or hey..you Can even START the projeCt anD bust out the squares anD joining in one week!

LET’S START BY LEARNING HOW TO CONNECT QUARTERS TO THE CROCHET:

How to CroCet a granny square

If you are using Noro Silk Garden yarn, you will notice that there can be a drastic variation in color from square to square. (To see what you need for this design click here.) If you are using a different yarn, it may be the same for you. If you’re looking for the other parts to this CroCet along, you’ll finD Part One here anD Part Three here.

If you have different colored squares, reCord it and think about how they will look in a ready-made bag. In my bag, for instanCe, I really likeD the pink anD reD hues anD wasn’t as Crazy about the Darker toneD greens anD tans. So you’ll notiCe that I put those squares on the bottom of the bag where they are not as prominently DisplayeD.

The squares are connected with a single crochet. First, review the diagram. Then follow the instructions on how to link the squares together. This Diagram shows how the squares are connected in the finished bag, oriented in such a way that you can “visualize” the finished bag with your hands.

How to CroCet a granny square

If we rotate the diagram above, it becomes easier to see the arrangement of the squares in the row. Find a large workspace and make sure the squares look squared. If you’D like the DireCtions for CroCeting this bag together inCluDing a large image of the above Diagram PLUS a rotateD Diagram to make this step easier, be sure to heaD to The Vault. Vault is a passworD protected library Of all kinds of free gaDgets ONLY for subscribers to my newsletter!

To tie the squares together to the crochet, you will interlace the squares together. First, crochet all the lines. Then crochet all the columns. Finally fold the piece and crochet the squares that make up the sides of the bag.

Start each row with a dot at the bottom, then work the squares together, working only the loops behind. The photo below shows a single crochet worked through both loops of both sides (which you can do if you prefer the look too).

How to CroCet a granny square

HERE’S HOW TO CROCHET QUARTERS TOGETHER:

Work the squares together as shown in the diagram. First, assemble the rows crosswise. WORK 2 SQUARES AT A TIME, WORK INDIVIDUALLY IN THE BACK OF BOTH SQUARES. When you reach the end of these 2 squares, take the next 2 squares and continue crocheting. Continue to knit until all squares on 2 rows have been joined. This will leave your sides free for now.

Continue the stitch on the next row, square by square up to the 2 rows just finished. Continue joining all lines

When you’re done, make the squares and make sure they still form the same pattern as the diagram. It is surprisingly easy to miss this step and put the block on the wrong line. So take a moment to make sure every square is where it shoulD be anD rip out anD CorreCt if you’ve maDe a mistake.

Then repeat the process to join the columns to the crochet. I think the scorers can help with this step.

Finally, look at the first pattern and follow the strokes to work the sides of the bag together. The dotted lines represent the two squares that make up the half sides of the finished bag.

The simplest way for me was to tie the pieces together (or fasten them with clips) and read the diagram a few times to ensure I was working the right squares together.

HERE IS a bag ready to show the CuCiti squares. Note that the first 2 squares form an “M” on each side. The upper edges of these squares (forming the letter “M”) are not worked together with crochet. This will allow you to easily open the finished bag.
