Each and every person has a different reason for meditating i.e. from health benefits to attaining spiritual connection. Mantra is a sacred utterance of word, sound or short phrase which has psychological and spiritual powers, which penetrates the depths of the unconscious mind and helps in attaining spiritual connection and desired health benefits. OM (AUM) is the most basic mantra or Bija Mantra. As per Big Bang theory, OM was the cosmic sound which initiated the creation of Universe. The single word OM produces the sound and vibration which allows you to feel one with the nature. The vibrations of the mantra chanting repeatedly awaken the spiritual life force and stimulate the chakras. In short we can say that Mantra is the living force of God.

How to Chant Mantras correctly
- Each mantra has different vibrations. Choose a mantra according to your need, wish and requirement.
- Repetition of mantra helps you to disconnect from any wasteful thoughts that arise during meditation.
- Best time is early morning or late evening. You can choose any time as per your convenience.
- Select a quiet and comfortable place for practice of mantra meditation.
- Start the Mantra in the background.
- Sit comfortably on a floor with cross-legged position or on the chair with your back straight and eyes closed.
- Place your hands adjacent to Navel.
- Relax your body and muscles and smile.
- Slowly take a few deep breaths. Concentrate on your breath in the way in which you feel most comfortable and observe each inhalation and exhalation but avoid to control or analyse your breath; just experience each breath. Feel your belly rise and fall. Repeat it 4-5 times.
- Enjoy the relaxing experience.
- It is time to chant your chosen mantra, take a deep breath in. Slowly chant the Mantra … when you exhale, keep the pace slow, and you don’t have to be loud or forceful. Go alongwith the track to set your pace right. Try to pronounce correctly but not over-conscious.
- During chant feel mantra’s vibrations starting from your lower belly and traveling all the way upto your brain as you chant. Chant mantra slowly (not very loud) or silently but with feelings. Slowly feel all your unwanted thoughts, pain, stress leaving your body with every chant.
- Every mantra produces a unique sound and vibration during chanting and stimulates various areas of the brain, bringing about positive results that include relaxation and natural healing.
- A mantra can be chanted while focusing upon a specific part of the body that needs to be healed. Similarly, spiritual mantras help to create positive attitude and empower the person.
- Feel a sense of calm and bliss. All wasteful thoughts, activities will start decreasing and eventually come to a stand still. Feel the flow of energy and vibrations.
- Repeat the mantra for as long as you want, but for powerful results, chant at least for 15-20 minutes.

10 tips for mantra chanting:
1. use correct pronunciation – if you are not sure about mantra correct pronunciation then its better to use simple and easy mantra or to learn correct pronunciation from an expert. because there are some tantric mantras which should be pronounced correctly otherwise they can cause harm in your psychic bodies as well as in your life. also try to find the meaning of the mantra. because if you know the meaning and science behind mantra then it will have more impact on your consciousness. remember, mantra is a subtle way to affect your consciousness and other bodies. so good to know about the mantra well. if the deity associated with the mantra is satvic then it recommended to follow vegetarian deity, speak truth and follow other such things associated with the deity.
2. don’t keep on changing your mantra – more number of times you chant the mantra with devotion, more it becomes potent. many mantras have to be chanted a fixed number of times before they become potent (sidh karna in hindi) and start showing their beneficial results. so better to choose one mantra and try it for some time. if you like it then stick to it. thats true in other spiritual practices also.
3. take initiation from a guru – when you take initiation in mantra chanting from a realized guru then it has more impact. because during initiation guru imparts some of his shakti (energy) in your mantra. moreover guru will initiates you in the right mantra meant for you.

7. don’t chant mechanically – you should not chant the mantra without any feeling. trust the power of mantra and the deity associated with it. have reverence for mantra. mechanical chanting of mantra is not so powerful as compared to the chanting with faith and devotion. secondly, many people chant mantras aloud. i feel slowly one should move towards internal chanting and then to wordless chanting.

10. interference from thoughts – mantra goes more deep in your consciousness when your mind is silent and free from thoughts. but stopping thoughts is not in your hand. you cannot control your mind. so never fight with your thoughts and emotions. thoughts will come, when you are doing mantra chanting. so just divert your attention back to the mantra whenever any thought come. the attitude should not be of fight with the thoughts or with the emotions. do the chanting lovingly and with devotion. don’t look for spiritual results because all these are games of mind. have patience and trust on your mantra and the deity associated. give your totality to your sadhana.

Whether we are deep in morning sadhana or driving a car to work, the vibrations leave us in a more peaceful and meditative frame of mind for the rest of our day. We chant because it makes us feel wonderful, but also, we chant because when we are not chanting, we act from a more tranquil frame of mind.
Mantra chanting makes your life flow, simply put. If you are feeling stuck in life, whether you cannot seem to get the job you want or find a satisfying relationship, the energy of your life and your spirit is too stagnant. Mantra chanting and yoga help move energy in the body and heart so that the energy flowing to and through the spirit is more fluid.
If you are just starting a chanting practice, give yourself a gentle assessment. Are you nervous when you chant? Quiet? Loud? Do not attack yourself and convince yourself that you cannot sing and therefore should not be chanting (and certainly not, gasp!, where anyone else could hear you). That is not the purpose of the exercise. Simply notice with a neutral state of mind where you are in the process of chanting. Is your throat tight? When you chant, is the sound coming from your navel or from your head? The answers to these questions are clues to what may be blocking you in your life.
If your voice is so quiet you can hardly hear yourself, you may be living a life where you are afraid to be seen and heard. Are you really living your truth and being all you can be?
If you are nervous when you chant and your throat feels tight, fear may be a problem in your life. Are you ready to let go of the fears that hold you back and step into a life of faith and love in action?
If your voice seems to vibrate more from your head than your navel, you may not be fully living from your heart. Are you centered, grounded and balancing the needs of your heart with the needs of your head?
Chanting is an amazing form of meditation that teaches you by showing rather than telling you what may be restraining you from fully living the life of your dreams. Be gentle and easy on yourself as you are beginning. It is a form of yoga after all, and when you are just starting yoga, you can’t expect your body to twist into a pretzel shape right away! Slow and steady progress is made through commitment and self-nurturing. The more you do it, the more you shine.
Chanting really is a process of connecting with your own heart and soul. While you develop a relationship with the Divine, you end up learning more about yourself through the conversation. In pursuit of the Infinite, you develop your own infinity.

Here are five tips to enhance your chanting:
Too often in our stressed out lives running here and there, we don’t focus on our own breath. It is an automatic process most of the time, and we take it for granted. But when you are chanting, control of your breathing goes a long way to improve the quality of the sound. Do some simple pranayama to start. Try this: Sit quietly and close your eyes. Inhale slowly and deeply for 10 seconds. Hold the breath for ten seconds. Then exhale slowly and deeply for 10 seconds. Continue for at least 3 minutes. Gradually build up until you can hold each portion of the breathe for 20 seconds.
As a chanter, your body is a temple and an instrument, so you have to take care of it as both. The best way to do this is through consciously relaxing and moving your body through yoga and through nourishing your body with rich, whole foods. Be aware that spicy foods can make it more difficult for some people to sing, as can cold drinks. Treat yourself to some warm yogi tea and put a few drops of almond oil or honey into it to soothe your throat. Then limber up before singing with some gentle stretching, some neck rolls, and an asana such as Camel Pose, which will open your heart and your throat chakra. 3) Silent Meditation
There is no way around this one. Meditation is key. Stilling our minds becomes the most important tool for developing a conscious heart. There are hundreds of forms of meditation, and certainly chanting is one. But try to turn the chant inwards for a change. If you are practicing a certain mantra, such as Guru Guru Waheguru, Guru Ram Das Guru, and want to develop your skill chanting it outwardly, go into the silence of your own heart and develop a relationship with the mantra internally. Silent repetition of a mantra leads to a deep and profound understanding of its meaning, which is an irreplaceable boost to the spirit behind your chanting.
You cannot hide your feelings when you chant. This leads to an immediate emotional response when you are listening to a beautiful mantra chanted by an experienced practitioner. If you have a favorite musician of mantra whose songs you love, consider why. More likely than not, at least part of the reason will be because of the emotion in the music and how it makes you feel. The mantras strip our layers of concealment away and we are exposed as pure souls. If we are nervous or fearful or angry, it shows in our voice. So in speaking, so in singing. A shaky voice means shaky self-confidence. Develop a habit of self-encouragement. Commit to saying a positive affirmation to yourself with as much belief as you can muster (and if you have to, fake it until you make it!). Select something that feels right to you. Try something like: “I have a unique and powerful voice, and I share its special beauty with the world.” Or “With every note and every word, I open my heart to the universe, accepting healing and strength.”
5) Heart Opening
At its heart, chanting is about your heart. To open your voice, you have to open your heart. Do whatever it takes to heal your heart; there is no more important work in your life. What makes your soul sing? Were you that girl who dreamed of being a ballerina, but felt too conscious of your body to put on a leotard? Maybe take a ballet class as an adult. Did you have dreams of being Mick Jagger, but your parents wouldn’t give you guitar lessons? Take them now and jam it up. If you are a painter, go crazy with swirls of color. All of this will help your chanting. And if at your heart, what makes your soul sing is chanting, then sing, sing, sing. Never stop. Play the mantras as often as you can, while cooking, while driving, while walking. Sing along with the happy abandon you would see from a kindergarten class singing Twinkle, Twinkle. How to Chant
- After having identified your issue/concern/problem, think about it before you begin the chanting of the relevant shloka and mantra connected with the issue.
- Keep the yantra (mystic diagram in gold) in front of you and concentrate on it while you chant. Chant the shlokas and mantra from the card /picture in front of you.
- Chant the shlokas (27 times) along with the mantra (108 times) continuously, till you feel it’s vibration within your being. Although, one can chant the mantra at any time, if possible chant the mantras in the morning hours between 4:00-6:00 am, as this time is proven to be the most effective for healing. One can also chant in the evenings between 5:00-7:00 pm.
The cycle of chanting must be for 21 days continuously to get best results.
In addition, having food without salt for 21 days is recommended for even better results. (Saltless food can be consumed by either the patient or the person chanting the mantras)
The patient or the person chanting can also listen to the shlokas and mantras at night.In addition, one can listen while traveling or during free time so that the mantra is deeply ingrained in the subconscious mind.
Precaution to take:
Women should avoid touching the book and yantras during their menstrual cycle. However, one can chant in the mind, if learnt by heart. If the menstrual cycle falls during the time period of chanting the shlokas, the chanting should be discontinued for those days and resumed once the menstrual cycle is over.
Mantra Healing Procedure:
You have to have faith in the system. You must believe that by chanting these shlokas you are going to achieve the desired result. You have to chant with full intensity so that when you chant, the frequency of vibration matches that in the Cosmos.
Continuously chant the shloka 9 times till you feel the vibration in your left palm then right palm then left sole and right sole.
You can chant the Shloka 27 times or the mantra 108 times which will bring changes in the cellular structure of your body.
Keep the yantra in front of you while chanting.
For women, don’t touch the book and yantras during the menstrual cycle. You can however chant in the mind.
Listen to the Mantra and Shloka at night while sleeping.
If you cannot chant everyday just play the MP3 recording of the Shloka and Mantra every day.
Who can chant?

Origin of Mantras
Mantras are Vedic in origin. The teachings of the Vedas consist of various Mantric chants or hymns cognized by different seers or Rishis from the Cosmic Mind. Since the Vedas are impersonal and eternal, the exact historical date of the origin of Mantra chanting is hard to arrive at. For example, every Mantra in the Vedas, Upanishads and various religious traditions (sampradayas) within Hindu religion begin with Om or Aum—the primordial sound, the sound that is said to have its origins at the time of the creation of the cosmos—also referred to as the "Big Bang."
Om: The Beginning and the End
The Bible (John 1:1) says: "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God." Modern Vedic philosophers have interpreted this teaching of the Bible, and equated Om with God. Om is the most important of all mantras. All mantras generally begin and often also end with Om.
