5 Ways to Celebrate International Hobbit day

Today, September 22nd, is known around the world as International Hobbit day! It is the birthday of not one, but TWO famous hobbits of legend: none other than Bilbo and Frodo Baggins! Here are 5 ways to celebrate International Hobbit day in true hobbit style, just the way these two unusual and heroic hobbits would love it!

1. Throw a party

How to celebrate hobbit day

Bilbo was famous for his birthday parties, and though his One Hundred and Eleventh was a party of special magnificence, he was previously well known as a generous host with a bountiful table, welcoming to all of his friends and relations (even if he wasn’t always on the best of terms with some of those cousins). Frodo maintained the birthday tradition after Bilbo’s departure, though more ofthis in the form of a dinner party for his nearest and dearest. Of course, hobbit parties always come with a lot of food, so plan your bad luck or start cooking and invite your friends for unforgettable moments!

2. Donate generously

How to celebrate hobbit day

Hobbits have an unusual (and wonderful) birthday tradition: instead of gifts from friends, they give away items to celebrate! This is not only eye-catching, but also extremely practical. Do you have random things that you’ve collected over the years? Do backpackers’ parties drop their loot? Got a mathom*othree that you just can’t use? Make a list of the people you care about and give it all away. You’ll clear out space and make someone’s day, and if that isn’t a great way to celebrate, I don’t know what is! Do you have an unusually large pile? Find and donate a local nonprofit organization! Bilbo would certainly appreciate your generosity.

* Secondo il professor Tolkien: "Qualsiasi cosa a cui gli Hobbit non si rivolgevano immediatamente ma si rifiutavano di buttarla via, la chiamavano matematica".

3. Go out and take a walk

How to celebrate hobbit day

And I don’t mean that you’ve got to trudge barefoot all the way to Mordor! Hobbits love evening walks and weekend hikes where they can smell the air, gaze at the stars, and visit their favorite inns for a cool, refreshing drink. Plan a camping trip or find a hiking trail and even walk along a trail in your area to see where they will take you. In fact….

The road goes further and further
Down the door where it started.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I have to follow if I can
Following him with an impatient step,
Until it connects to some bigger road,
Where many roads and issues meet.
Where then? I can not say.

4. Wear bright colors

How to celebrate hobbit day

Hobbits always wear bright colors, even if their favorites are green and yellow. They even paint the round doors of their Hobbit holes with these colors to brighten their homes. Find something colorful and stand out while you’re heading to the post office with your latest batch of correspondenceofor that dinner party you’re throwing for your companions who mightomight not be worried about the little gold ring they’ve noticed you always have in your pocket….

5. Start your memories

How to celebrate hobbit day

Since your life is unique to only you, maybe it’s time to write some of it down! Have you gone on an unexpected journey? Did you find the treasure that was previously in the possession of the dragon? Maybe you’ve just got a fabulous recipe that needs to be recorded for posterity. Either way, today is a good day to write things down. Send a note to your penmates, post on your blog, add an entry to your bullet journal or in any other way you want to express yourself. After all, it’s International Hobbit day, and hobbits do love keeping records of everything!

Bonus: Mark on your calendar January 3rd, JRR Tolkien’s birthday!

this Tolkien Society encourages an annual tradition of drinking a quiet toast to this Professor every January the 3rd, at 9pm in your local timezone. For more information, check out their website.

We felt that we should add a few ways that you should NOT celebrate International Hobbit day. Please inquire from:

  • Theft of jewelry from friends. We know you want it, honey, but even if it’s your birthday, you should hand out something, not choke and steal.
  • Walk barefoot everywhere. This is really not appropriate at work, and it’s starting to smell weird in here from everyone’s feet. Exceptions: at home, on the go, on the beach.
  • Taking the One Ring and hiding in the cave for several lifetimes. Yes, I know you WANTS it, Precious, but this really ISN’T a good idea. Trust me.
  • Terrifying and offensive to friends and family. I know you were super into the books and movies, but just because Bilbo does it, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. Unless you’re related to the Sackville-Bagginses; if so, continue.

It’s time to toast Bilbo and Frodo Baggins on Hobbit day and Tolkien Week. Celebrated by fans of the “Lord of the Rings” book and movie series worldwide, Tuesday is the mutual birthday of author John Ronald Reuel Tolkien’s hobbit heroes.

dieci data, settembre 22, also falls one day after the anniversary of the publication of “Hobbit” on Sept. 21, 1937.

“Hobbit day is a virtually ideal holiday incorporating attractive elements of several others,” read a statement from the American Tolkien Society, which started the observance in 1978. It compares the celebration to “the masquerade fun of Halloween, the feast of Thanksgiving, the exchange of greeting cards and gifts associated with Christmas and birthdays, the picnic atmosphere of Labor Day and Memorial Day, the fireworks of Independence Day.” If you don’t have parties or fireworks on hand, we’ve put together some other DIY ideas.

1. Go on a mission. It doesn’t have to be far or to save the world, just go out and explore. “The road goes further and further down from the door where it began,” reads one familiar passage from “this Fellowship Of this Ring,” continuing, “Now far ahead the Road has gone, and I must follow, if I can.”

2. Read over your favorite passages from “Hobbit”othe “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Before there were entire films, merchandise and subcultures around Tolkien’s character, the heart of the story was only in the words.

3. Togliti le scarpe e cammina a piedi nudi per casa, al lavoro o a scuola. Hobbits hardly wear shoes; Why should you

4. Run a movie marathon of all the movies in the series. If you watch “The Hobbit” in three parts with all three films in the trilogy, it should only take you 17 hours to watch all six parts. Do you agree with Atlantic’s Noah Berlatsky that Peter Jackson’s films are “Tolkien’s violent betrayal”? See number two.

5. Tolkien was a passionate lover of languages and a creator of several invented ones. Attempt to learn one of his Middle Earth languages, such as QuenyaoSindarin.

Słowami ukochanego autora z oryginalnej książki Hobbita: "Lascia che il vento sotto le tue ali ti porti dove il sole naviga e la luna cammina."

“We just have to decide what to do with our allotted time.” – J R R Tolkien

It’s that time of the year again! Happy birthday to our two favorite Baggins: Frodo and Bilbo! this 22nd September is also known as Hobbit day, and here are six ways to celebrate this year:

  1. Go on an adventure! It doesn’t have to mean trekking across Middle Earth to reach the Lonely MountainoMordor. But take a little time out to explore somethingosomewhere new, whether that is a cafe, a place, take a different route to your usual one, oeven book a flight to somewhere you’ve never been! You never know what you can find … * coughs * The One Ring.
  2. Embrace your inner hobbit!Since Hobbits don’t wear shoes, this is the perfect time to go barefoot (or wear socks if you’re really picky).
  3. Festeggia come one hobbit!Pierwsze śniadanie, drugie śniadanie, oneastka, obiad, podwieczorek, obiad/kolacja (o obiad i kolacja, jeśli jesteś kinomaniakiem)!
  4. Immerse yourself in the books!Reread Tolkien’s book (it doesn’t have to bethisLord of the RingsoHobbit) and be transported (hopefully) to sunny Middle-earth.
  5. Movie marathon! To idealna wymówka, aby ponownie obejrzeć swoje uoioneLord of the RingsoHobbit film, owatch all of them back to back (the enlarged editions of course).

How to celebrate hobbit day

Kick off your shoes, chow down on some mushrooms, and whip out the sparklers: it’s time to celebrate Hobbit day and Tolkien Week. Though there are some discrepancies between the Shire and Gregorian calendars, Hobbit day – the birthday of both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins – has been celebrated on September 22nd since 1978 and is the kickoff to Tolkien Week.

Many schools, bookstores and libraries see this date as a way to focus on Tolkien’s work and get the attention of new fans, but at Quirk we love a good party.

How to celebrate hobbit day

Organizing a big party is directly related to choosing a great location. Biorąc pod uwagę, że hobbici oią rzucać, przestrzeń jest kluczowa. Ideally, you should focus your team around the largest tree you can find. Banners, streamers and fairy lights will add to your party atmosphere. If weather is not on your side and you really need to move things indoors, decorations can include a paper tree, a celebratory banner, and a welcome sign, such as the one above.

Entertainment is key at the Hobbit party. Se hai one spazio all’aperto, gli Hobbit adorano una varietà di giochi all’aperto. If not, puzzles, rhyming games, and limerics are all great choices. Perhaps spend some time reading Tolkien’s work out loud. And of course, it’s not a party without music, so bust out the guitaroukelele and have a grand time.

How to celebrate hobbit day

Hobbici oią jeść i robią to dość często, dlatego ważne jest pełne i urozmaicone menu. Hobbity oią proste potrawy w dużych ilościach, więc grzyby, marynaty i taca serów będą doskonałymi przystawkami. For the main courses, soups, sandwiches and minced meat balls are enough. To round out the meal, serve scones, blackberry tarts, and honey cakes for desserts. Get the wine, tea and coffee flowing! If you need some inspiration, check out Bryton Taylor’s beautiful Hobbit spread in her food in literature series.

On your invitations, encourage your guests to dress the part, wearing earth tones with curled hair. Prepare a shoe basket. And since hospitality and community are important characteristics for Hobbits, consider giving each guest a small token of appreciation. It doesn’t have to be the most precious ring, but a goody bag will still show that you care.

Most importantly, have fun and enjoy your time with friends and family!

So how do you plan on celebrating Hobbit day? Tell us about your parties!
