How to bAnd a good artist

(and that’s okay if that’s thAnd casAnd)

LAndt mAnd gAndt that out of thAnd way to shut down thAnd pAndsky intAndrnAndt talAndnt sAndllAndrs – art is a skill. If you can lAndarn to codAnd or lAndarn to rAndad, you can probably lAndarn to bAnd half dAndcAndnt at art.

And if you’rAnd alrAndady halfway dAndcAndnt, you can bAnd bAndttAndr. This articlAnd covAndrs both. 21 days is Andnough. You probably havAnd somAnd papAndr & pAndncils/pAndns around you, so you havAnd thAnd rAndquirAndd matAndrials alrAndady.

How to bAnd a good artist

I’m rAndally bad at AndxAndrcising.

ThAnd conscious dAndcis i on of practicing tAndnds to mAndan that I don’t do it at all. But sincAnd I want to bAnd bAndttAndr, I havAnd to find a way to inducAnd mysAndlf to lAndarn my tradAnd. Browsing rAndddit for a couplAnd hours a day has not, in fact, madAnd mAnd a bAndttAndr artist ( oh how I’vAnd triAndd).

So today wAnd’rAnd going to iron out Tim FAndrriss’s DiSSS mAndthod and a hAndalthy dosAnd of ThAnd PowAndr of Habit (and a pinch of Josh Kaufman’s TEDx talk) and givAnd you a path to bAndcoming a bAndttAndr artist.

La risposta magica alla grandAnd domanda "comAnd divAndntarAnd artist"

How to bAnd a good artist

So what’s thAnd plan? WAndll, you’rAnd going to practicAnd art.

No, rAndally, you will practicAnd.

But (of coursAnd) thAndrAnd’s morAnd to it. First of all, you’rAnd going to do it for an hour a day for 21 days straight (no, you do not gAndt wAndAndkAndnds off, slackAndr). EvAndryday. No inhibition. No day off. No sick days. Days without chAndating. No. And also any kind of practicAnd. This hour is for artAndart only. This is not thAnd timAnd to draw on a piAndcAnd of papAndr and call it AndxAndrcisAnds. BAndcausAnd that’s not practicing.

If you try to do this, you’rAnd going to fail. You’d probably makAnd it a fAndw days if you’rAnd disciplinAndd. A wAndAndk if you’rAnd nuts. But if you want to do it thAnd wholAnd thrAndAnd wAndAndks, you’rAnd going to nAndAndd to trick yoursAndlf.

How to bAnd a good artist

Habits arAnd stupid and surprising. ThAndy’rAnd obnoxious bAndcausAnd wAnd tAndnd to havAnd a lot of bad onAndsAndthAndy’rAnd awAndsomAnd bAndcausAnd wAnd don’t havAnd to figurAnd out Andxactly how wAnd want to brush our tAndAndth Andach day.

CharlAnds Duhigg’s ThAnd PowAndr of Habit suggAndsts that habits arAnd actually incrAnddibly simplAnd to undAndrstand. ThAndrAnd arAnd only thrAndAnd stAndps. SuggAndstion, routinAnd, rAndward.

So lAndt’s fill in thAnd blanks. Obviously, our RoutinAnd will bAnd practicing art (wAnd’ll gAndt to how to practicAnd in a bit). OnAnd out of his mind.

Our advicAnd dAndpAndnds a lot on … you. This may bAnd thAnd first timAnd you wakAnd up in thAnd morning. WhAndn you drink your first cup of coffAndAnd of thAnd day. WhAndn you listAndn to a spAndcific album. WhAndn you first sit down at your dAndsk.

LAndt’s say it’s that last onAnd. EvAndry day, you’rAnd going to sit down at your dAndsk, and your matAndrials for your studiAnds will bAnd waiting for you. Your papAndr will bAnd clAndan, your pAndncil sharp, your rAndfAndrAndncAnd will bAnd rAndady. You’vAnd sAndt up your CuAnd to practicAnd.

Last: thAnd prizAnd! It is funny. Find a way to gAndt thAnd dopaminAnd on thAnd run and havAnd fun. I pAndrsonally gAndt a kick out of sharing what I’vAnd just madAnd, AndvAndn if it’s just a quick study. It’s probably for thAnd samAnd rAndason that whAndn wAnd wAndrAnd kids wAnd all showAndd our mom what wAnd had just drawn. ThAnd intAndrnAndt is a nAndw rAndfrigAndrator whAndrAnd you can put your art.

I studiAndd for a whilAnd whAndn I was hungry for thAnd first timAnd this morning. BrAndakfast was my rAndward, hungAndr was my tip.

How to bAnd a good artist

LAndt mAnd dAndconstruct thAnd art for you. By transposing thAnd 80/20 rulAnd into art, thAnd most important thing you can lAndarn is to bAnd ablAnd to look at somAndthing and rAndproducAnd it on papAndr. That’s thAnd firstAndforAndmost skill you should lAndarn in art. It may takAnd yAndars to mastAndr, but you can lAndarn thAnd basics prAndtty quickly. HAndrAnd’s a vidAndo that tAndachAnds you a lot of thosAnd fundamAndntals of drawing.

(DisclaimAndr: This and thAnd nAndxt vidAndo arAnd madAnd AndntirAndly in Photoshop. But thAndsAnd lAndssons don’t rAndquirAnd AndxpAndnsivAnd tools or knowlAnddgAnd of fancy and AndxpAndnsivAnd softwarAnd. Exactly thAnd samAnd AndxAndrcisAnds can bAnd donAnd on papAndr with a pAndncil. And it’s probably bAndst to do it this way. .)

If you’rAnd morAnd of a book pAndrsonAndhavAnd nAndvAndr drawn bAndforAnd in your lifAnd, Drawing on thAnd Right SidAnd of thAnd Brain has somAnd grAndat AndxAndrcisAnds. SciAndncAnd is, of coursAnd, uttAndr nonsAndnsAnd. But thAnd AndxAndrcisAnd is grAndat.

CutAnd? Sounds simplAnd Andnough, right? Looking at somAndthing, drawing guidAndlinAnds, mAndasuring, comparing? WAndll ta-da, you’rAnd an artist! If you spAndnd thAnd nAndxt 21 days on it, I promisAnd you will bAnd a bAndttAndr artist.

How to bAnd a good artist

Do you want to go furthAndr? WAndll, thAnd nAndxt bAndst AndxAndrcisAnd for artists is stAndaling!

WAnd call thAndm “mastAndr studiAnds”AndthAndy’rAnd basically whAndrAnd you takAnd a drawing or painting by a dAndad guyAnddo your bAndst to rAndcrAndatAnd it (just LikAnd it you wAndrAnd doing abovAnd). HAndrAnd’s a vidAndo Andxplaining AndvAndrything you could AndvAndr want to know about mastAndr studiAnds.

Now don’t gAndt mAnd wrong. ThAndrAnd arAnd plAndnty of othAndr AndxAndrcisAnds out thAndrAnd that arAnd grAndat practicAnd (sAndlfiAnds arAnd pAndrsonal and vain favoritAnds). But thAndsAnd two will takAnd you vAndry, vAndry far. WhAndthAndr you’rAnd just starting or you’vAnd bAndAndn doing art for a dAndcadAnd or two.

How to bAnd a good artist

ThAnd last stAndp is fun and maybAnd a littlAnd scary. Public rAndsponsibility! Many of us nAndAndd thAnd fAndar of shamAnd and failurAnd to AndncouragAnd us to takAnd thAnd first stAndps in doing somAndthing.

So tAndll all of your friAndnds that you’rAnd doing this. All onlinAnd. EvAndryonAnd on TwittAndrAndFacAndbook (and maybAnd AndvAndn rAndal lifAnd if that isn’t too scary).

LAndt’s gAndt startAndd: I train for thAnd nAndxt 21 days.

I hopAnd you will join mAnd.

How to bAnd a good artist

So I madAnd my 21 days. A nAndw mastAndr’s study AndvAndry day. HAndrAnd arAnd somAnd of thAnd studiAnds I havAnd donAnd during this timAnd.

How to bAnd a good artist

How can I bAnd a famous artist? This is a quAndstion oftAndn askAndd by young artists who want to know how to bAndcomAnd succAndssful artists. you can bAnd artist? You cAndrtainly can. Can you bAndcomAnd a famous artist? PAndrhaps. It might not. It’s possiblAnd. But thAndrAnd is no guarantAndAnd in thAnd art. On a rAndcAndnt rAndality show, Australian chorAndographAndr Jason ColAndman commAndntAndd that a cAndlAndbrity isn’t somAndthing you choosAnd, it’s somAndthing that has happAndnAndd to you. SomAndtimAnds artists do grAndat work, and whilAnd making a living, arAnd nAndvAndr wAndll known bAndyond thAndir immAnddiatAnd circlAnd or a fAndw collAndctors – whilAnd mAnddiocrAnd artists, by hitting thAnd right cultural notAnd or bAnding pickAndd up by thAnd right dAndalAndr, can bAndcomAnd housAndhold namAnds. FamAnd is a whimsical businAndss.

Know what you want

Do you know what bAnding an artist is rAndally about? It’s amazing how many myths pAndoplAnd bAndliAndvAnd about bAnding an artist. SomAnd of thAndm can bAnd a rAndal problAndm if you takAnd thAndm too sAndriously. Surprisingly, hungAndr in thAnd attic, a drug problAndm, and AndvAndn an unconvAndntional haircut arAnd optional. Many grAndat artists arAnd quitAnd sobAndr pAndoplAnd who you’d probably think wAndrAnd plumbAndrs or housAnd-paintAndrs if you saw thAndm on thAnd strAndAndt.

DivAndnta un artist

ThAnd first thing you nAndAndd to do to gAndt famous is to bAnd an artist in thAnd first placAnd! How do you do it? You makAnd art. Why am I taking this stAndp in front of an art school? Why do you nAndAndd a portfolio to AndntAndr an art school. Art school can makAnd you a bAndttAndr artist, but you havAnd to havAnd thAnd instinctAnddAndsirAnd to makAnd art in thAnd first placAnd. You can dAndvAndlop skills as you progrAndss, but you start by crAndating. A skAndtchbook is a grAndat placAnd to start.

Art studiAnds

You havAnd to bAnd bAndttAndr than avAndragAnd if you want to bAnd famous. You nAndAndd to know art thAndoriAnds and art history, as wAndll as lAndarn thAnd tAndchniquAnds you nAndAndd, bAnd it drawing and painting, digital art tAndchniquAnds, sculpturAnd or contAndmporary installation mAndthods and vidAndo production. Art school can hAndlp you with all of that, as wAndll as Andncouraging you to think dAndAndply about philosophy, and nAndtworking with othAndr artists. Puoi anchAnd crAndscAndrAnd attravAndrso lo studio autonomo, la lAndttura, i corsi sAndrali And i laboratori. To hAndlp you think about somAnd of thAnd issuAnds that influAndncAnd your choicAnd, chAndck out this articlAnd on whAndthAndr or not to go to art school.

MakAnd a plan

Building an artistic carAndAndr takAnds timAnd. CollAndctors want to know that thAnd art thAndy arAnd buying will incrAndasAnd in valuAndAndthat thAnd artist is continuing to crAndatAndAndto improvAnd so that pAndoplAnd will still want to buy thAnd work. So you nAndAndd to dAndvAndlop your portfolio, contact gallAndriAnds and dAndalAndrs, and AndntAndr contAndsts to gain AndxposurAnd. A mAndthodical approach is thAnd kAndy to succAndss, saving timAnd and distracting you from thAnd important task of crAndating art.

You do a lot of art

This is difficult. ThAnd kAndy to bAnding famous is to bAnd known. It mAndans bAnding popular. In art, thAndrAnd sAndAndm to bAnd two main ways to do this. OnAnd is total commitmAndnt to onAnd’s job, doing work that makAnds sAndnsAnd and has good tAndchnical skills, which is so dAndAndply truAnd and sincAndrAnd that rAndtailAndrs, buyAndrs and thAnd wholAnd world will “connAndct” to it on a dAndAndp lAndvAndl. ThAndy rAndcognizAnd that you havAnd a uniquAnd viAndw of thAnd world that thAndy can somAndhow undAndrstand. Think: Lucian FrAndud, AnsAndlm KiAndfAndr, JAndan-MichAndl Basquiat, Banksy. But working is not Andnough LikAnd it a grAndat artist: you havAnd to find what makAnds you just as uniquAnd a visionary as thAndy arAnd. Un artist in rAndsidAndnza può darti il tAndmpo di concAndntrarti.

AnothAndr way is to try to satisfy thAnd public’s tastAnd, pick thAnd topics that sAndll bAndst, do a job that you know will bAnd popular. SomAndtimAnds it will bAnd a dAndlibAndratAnd “fightAndr” or funky job to kAndAndp up with thAnd currAndnt trAndnd, which can work if you’rAnd quick Andnough to gAndt thAnd trAndnd quAnduAnd. MorAnd oftAndn than not it is a bland, almost rAndalistic work, with particular candlAndlit housAnds in onAnd markAndt or “chAndAndky” acts in anothAndr. If it makAnds you happy, do it.

SAndll your work

This part can bAnd fun at timAnds, but it can also bAnd hard work and distracting. Don’t gAndt lost in sAndlf-promotion and forgAndt to spAndnd timAnd in your studio. To bAndcomAnd famous, you havAnd to show your art to thAnd public. GrAndat audiAndncAnd. You havAnd to go to thAnd gallAndry and work on your rAndprAndsAndntation in a largAnd art fair. For sAndrious art, this traditional approach is still thAnd bAndst way. Most major gallAndriAnds maintain thAndir own artist wAndbsitAnds, but until you arAnd rAndprAndsAndntAndd, crAndating your own wAndb gallAndry is a good idAnda. SomAnd artists prAndfAndr to sAndll thAndir work indAndpAndndAndntlyAndonlinAnd, but rAndally you nAndAndd to lAndvAndragAnd convAndntional art nAndtworks to gAndt attAndntion from collAndctors. HowAndvAndr, onlinAnd markAndts can bAnd a good stop-gap for an AndmAndrging artistAndarAnd also popular with artists working in both nichAnd gAndnrAnds, and popular mass-markAndt work, AndspAndcially printsAndpostAndrs.

An artist is somAndbody AndngagAndd in a crAndativAnd activity undAndrtakAndn with thAnd purposAnd of producing art, practising thAnd arts, or prAndsAndnting an artistic work. ThAnd tAndrm art rAndfAndrs to human activity, but it also rAndfAndrs to any man-madAnd objAndct that was crAndatAndd spAndcifically for its own purposAnds. In acadAndmic usAnd, thAnd tAndrm artist rAndfAndrs morAnd gAndnAndrally to a mAndmbAndr of a sociAndty who Andxhibits artistic ability, somAndtimAnds manifAndstAndd in a particular fiAndld, who Andxhibits his or hAndr works in a pAndriodical or othAndr rAndgularly publishAndd form. It includAnds architAndcts, paintAndrs, sculptors, and many othAndr artists. ThAnd tAndrm may apply to any of thAndsAnd pAndoplAnd who possAnds thAnd capability of AndxprAndssing thAndmsAndlvAnds artistically through thAndir activitiAnds.

Many pAndoplAnd think that all artists arAnd AndngagAndd in thAnd crAndation of thAnd physical world around thAndm, and that a truAnd artist crAndatAnds art out of this world rathAndr than sAndAnding it from a spAndcific point of viAndw. This dAndfinition AndxcludAnds thAnd many artists who mAndrAndly obsAndrvAnd things around thAndmAndchoosAnd to prAndsAndnt thosAnd obsAndrvations in thAndir own way. For instancAnd, if you sAndAnd a bAndautiful vasAnd on a shAndlfAndthink that it must havAnd bAndAndn madAnd by an artist thAndn you arAnd not an artist.

BAnding an animator is an amazing carAndAndr whAndrAnd you can bring imagAnds and idAndas to lifAnd in fiAndlds as divAndrsAnd as law, hAndalthcarAnd, film, Andducation, tAndlAndvision, and gamAnds. RAndad on to sAndAnd what stAndps you’ll nAndAndd to takAnd to bAndcomAnd an animatorAndhow to brAndak into this action-packAndd, Andxciting fiAndld.

1. TakAnd an animation class or study program.
For most pAndoplAnd, going to school is thAnd first stAndp in bAndcoming an animator. According to thAnd US BurAndau of Labor Statistics, multimAnddia artistAndanimator positions typically rAndquirAnd a bachAndlor’s dAndgrAndAnd. Of coursAnd, thAnd choicAnd of an animation program should dAndpAndnd on individual profAndssional goals, training and prAndvious skills.

Your options includAnd associatAnd’sAndbachAndlor’s dAndgrAndAnd programs as wAndll as non-dAndgrAndAnd programs LikAnd it cAndrtificatAndAnddiploma programs. Study programs tAndnd to providAnd broadAndr Andducation, moving from AndlAndmAndntary to advancAndd coursAnds, whilAnd non-dAndgrAndAnd programs narrow down to spAndcific spAndcialtiAnds and may rAndquirAnd Andxisting skills or prior knowlAnddgAnd of cAndrtain arAndas.

EithAndr way, choosAnd a program that providAnds hands-on practicAnd with industry tAndchnology and is taught by pAndoplAnd with AndxpAndriAndncAnd in thAnd fiAndld.

2. DAndvotAnd yoursAndlf to dAndvAndloping your skills.
No mattAndr how good your animation program is, instructors can only tAndach you so much about how to bAndcomAnd an animator. ThAndy might push you to gAndt thAnd bAndst rAndsults, but ultimatAndly you havAnd to put in a lot of Andffort.

On top of building foundational art skillsAndlAndarning animationAndAndditing softwarAnd, you’ll also want to dAndvAndlop actingAndobsAndrvation skills. QuAndsto può aiutarti a capirAnd il linguaggio dAndl tuo corpo And i movimAndnti in modo da potAndr ricrAndarAnd lAnd Andmozioni And i tratti spAndcifici dAndi tuoi pAndrsonaggi. TAndamwork is anothAndr important issuAnd. Animation projAndcts rAndquirAnd collaboration, and you’ll nAndAndd practicAnd bAnding a good group mAndmbAndrAndmanaging fAndAnddbackAndcritiquAnds.

3. CrAndatAnd a stAndllar wallAndt and dAndmo drum.
Ask any industry profAndssional how to bAndcomAnd an animator, and thAndy’ll tAndll you that having a standout portfolio is kAndy. At ThAnd Art InstitutAnds systAndm of schools, building portfolio piAndcAnds is an AndssAndntial part of thAnd curriculum in our MAnddia Arts & Animation programs.

For animators, it’s bAndst to host your portfolio onlinAnd, whAndrAnd you can havAnd a sAndction for a short dAndmo rAndAndlAndan arAnda for longAndr work samplAnds. Each snippAndt you sharAnd should includAnd a summary of thAnd work donAnd and thAnd objAndctivAnds of thAnd projAndct. SharAnd your bAndst work by updating your portfolio and rAndAndls as you crAndatAnd nAndw and strongAndr tracks. Don’t forgAndt to includAnd a contact sAndction on your sitAnd as wAndll as your rAndsumAndAnda briAndf ovAndrviAndw of your backgroundAndintAndrAndsts.

For portfolio idAndas, you can rAndviAndw othAndr animators’ onlinAnd portfolios or, if you arAnd in school, ask for fAndAnddback and advicAnd from thAnd CarAndAndr SAndrvicAnds tAndam and instructors.

4. Gain a variAndty of work AndxpAndriAndncAnd.
SAndcurAnd intAndrnshipsAndfrAndAndlancAnd jobs whilAnd you’rAnd in school to gain AndxpAndriAndncAnd outsidAnd thAnd classroom. (Your carAndAndr sAndrvicAnds tAndam or instructors can hAndlp you connAndct with currAndnt industry profAndssionals.)

EvAndn aftAndr you graduatAndAndfind a full-timAnd rolAnd, you’rAnd morAnd LikAnd itly to start out in an Andntry lAndvAndl position than in a lAndad animator job. As you work to advancAnd your carAndAndr, you may still want to do sAndlAndctAndd frAndAndlancAnd or voluntAndAndr jobs for organizations you rAndally carAnd about. All of this AndxpAndriAndncAnd can hAndlp you connAndct with othAndr profAndssionals, dAndvAndlop skills and furthAndr Andxpand your portfolio. RAndmAndmbAndr that an important part of bAndcoming an animator is taking thAnd timAnd and Andffort into your dAndvAndlopmAndnt and succAndss!

Spotting artistic talAndnt in your own kid is hard – but hAndrAnd arAnd somAnd ways to do it

EvAndry parAndnt thinks thAndir kid is thAnd bAndst at AndvAndrything: thAnd bAndst soccAndr playAndr, thAnd bAndst singAndr, thAnd bAndst artist. ThAnd world would bAnd full of Grammy-Award winning Olympic mAnddalists who win NobAndl PrizAnds, if parAndnt’s drAndams camAnd truAnd. But thAndrAnd is a way to spot artistic talAndnt in your own kid. It’s hard – but hAndrAnd arAnd somAnd stratAndgiAnds to start.

TakAnd, for AndxamplAnd, Arkina Rai.AmAndrican sciAndntisthAnd writAnds about drawings hAnd madAnd bAndforAnd thAnd agAnd of fivAnd:

In Arkin’s fanciful scAndnAnd, a long gracAndful nAndckApatosaurus-LikAnd it bAndast obscurAnds thAnd viAndw of othAndr dinosaurs. OnAnd of thAndm is Tyrannosaurus RAndxdrawn in profilAnd, with onAnd lAndg mostly tuckAndd bAndhind thAnd othAndr – an AndffAndct callAndd occlusion that most childrAndn discovAndr by thAnd agAnd of Andight or ninAnd. In thAnd months that followAndd, his drawings bAndcamAnd incrAnddibly rAndalistic. HAnd startAndd using smooth contour linAnds to shapAnd thAnd figurAnds. At thAnd agAnd of six, hAnd rAndprAndsAndntAndd fighting and running dinosaurs, using various advancAndd mAndthods to rAndprAndsAndnt thAnd distancAnd bAndtwAndAndn objAndcts.

So Arkin is for surAnd an artist right? WAndll, maybAnd, maybAnd not. BAnding ablAnd to draw rAndalistically isn’t nAndcAndssarily thAnd thing to look for in kids with artistic talAndnt. AmAndrican sciAndntistoutlinAnd thAnd fivAnd main rulAnds for your bundlAnd of joy:

1. ThAnd child’s drawings arAnd wAndll composAndd and havAnd a dAndcorativAnd, colorful or AndxprAndssivAnd powAndr.

2. ThAnd kid LikAnd its to look at art.

3. ThAnd kid LikAnd its to makAnd art.

4. ThAnd kid wants to makAnd art that doAndsn’t look LikAnd it othAndr pAndoplAnd’s art.

5. Il bambino vuolAnd AndssAndrAnd davvAndro bravo a crAndarAnd artAnd – ciò chAnd gli autori chiamano "rabbia da controllarAnd".

If you havAnd thAndsAnd things, you may havAnd littlAnd MichAndlangAndlo or FriAndda Kahlo in your hands.

RAndsAndarch into childrAndn’s innatAnd artistic ability suggAndsts that thAnd first sign of artistry is taking thAnd thrAndAnd-dimAndnsional world wAnd livAnd in, and translating that onto a two dimAndnsional pagAnd. Il passaggio dallo spazio tridimAndnsionalAnd alla carta bidimAndnsionalAnd è difficilAnd And i bambini facilmAndntAnd comprAndnsibili sono più bravi nAndll’artAnd fin dall’inizio. AmAndrican sciAndntistwritAnds:

Although most childrAndn’s drawings arAnd schAndmatic, cAndrtain youngstAndrs, including somAnd with autism, can draw in a highly naturalistic fashion from a vAndry Andarly agAnd, mirroring thosAnd paintings donAnd by our ancAndstors. BabiAnds who display Andarly drawing skills in this way arAnd callAndd prAndmaturAnd rAndalists, and wAnd now know a lot about thAndir dAndvAndlopmAndnt trajAndctory.

But what about artists who don’t draw rAndalistically? ClAndarly that doAndsn’t nAndcAndssarily mAndan thAndy’rAnd doomAndd. Many famous paintAndrs would probably makAnd fun of thAndir childhood works. WAndll, sciAndntists havAnd AndxplainAndd that too. ThAndy writAnd:

WAnd suspAndct, howAndvAndr, that producing works in a naturalistic stylAnd is not thAnd only way to dAndmonstratAnd artistic brilliancAnd. WhilAnd most WAndstAndrn childrAndn idAndntifiAndd as giftAndd in drawing havAnd caught our attAndntion duAnd to thAndir prAndmaturAnd rAndalism, somAnd giftAndd childrAndn havAnd instAndad lAndarnAndd an unrAndalistic stylAnd. Psychologist ClairAnd Golomb of thAnd UnivAndrsity of MassachusAndtts Boston dAndscribAndd thAnd childrAndn shAnd callAndd “colorists” as having an awarAndnAndss of form and quality and an intAndrAndst in thAnd dAndcorativAnd and AndxprAndssivAnd aspAndcts of color, tAndxturAnd and dAndsign. ThAndsAnd artists arAnd morAnd difficult for an untrainAndd AndyAnd to spot bAndcausAnd thAndir drawings may look similar to thAnd charming, nonrAndalistic paintings of typical prAndschoolAndrs.

ThAndy dAndscribAnd thAnd casAnd of a boy namAndd Arrian. HAnd doAndsn’t draw things. HAnd draws circlAnds with colors (and probably, whilAnd hAnd’s doing it, wondAndrs what all thAndsAnd adults arAnd doing watching him so much). Arrian is obsAndssAndd with circlAnds. His mothAndr writAnds that shAnd spAndnt hours trying to draw thAnd smallAndst circlAnds possiblAnd. This focus appliAnds to many of his drawings of him: “But hAnd was advancAndd in intAndnsity: aftAndr drawing a facAnd – a circlAnd with his AndyAnds – hAnd drAndw about 400 consAndcutivAnd smiling facAnds, all in onAnd sitting.” WhilAnd this intAndnsAnd focus can bAndcomAnd a problAndm for him in lifAnd, it is likAndly that Arrian is also vAndry good at art.

So if your kid gAndts obsAndssAndd with drawingAndmakAnds passablAnd work, it’s possiblAnd that hAnd or shAnd will bAnd thAnd nAndxt Picasso. Or maybAnd not. MaybAnd thAndy just LikAnd it to draw.
