3 lifestyle changes to help prevent heartburn
While watching what you eat and drink can help reduce heartburn, there are some changes you can make to your daily life that can go hand in hand.
Look at the portion size.Larger meals and higher-fat meals tend to stay in the stomach longer before entering the small intestine, so the LES and esophagus are potentially exposed to stomach contents / acid for longer periods, according to Pat Baird , RD, of the National Heartburn Alliance.
So, if you suffer from frequent or intermittent heartburn, it’s a good idea to keep meals in your stomach as short as possible, which means keeping an eye on portions.

Cases of gastric reflux (heartburn) aren’t uncommon from time to time, but some people experience heartburn, discomfort, gas, and belching almost every time they eat. About 20% of the population suffers from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a chronic reflux disease diagnosed by a doctor.
Normally, the esophageal sphincter (a tube of muscle that allows food to pass into the stomach and then tighten to prevent it from returning) protects the esophagus from stomach acid. However, if the sphincter relaxes, food can push up through the free opening and cause gastric reflux.

Approximately one third of adults suffer from stomach ache, and if you’re one of them, you know how uncomfortable it can be when you eat a food that triggers an attack. Making careful food choices is important if you don’t want stomach problems to interfere with your life.
What is stomach ache?
Often called acid indigestion, stomach ache is a common condition associated with various symptoms of gastric discomfort, such as burning and warmth in your chest after eating. The pain that is experienced with stomach ache is caused by stomach acid. Multiple episodes of stomach ache can lead to a condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) oeven more serious problems such as ulcers of the esophagus. While stomach ache is common in the general population, it is extremely common in pregnant women, with up to 45 percent of pregnant women suffering from episodes of indigestion.
Foods that could trigger stomach ache and indigestion
Each person is unique, and what’s causing you stomach problems may not be what’s causing them in someone else’s. Keeping a food diary is useful for determining what foods trigger your indigestion. Once your food triggers are identified, it is best to eliminate them from your diet completely to avoid experiencing further stomach problems and stomach ache episodes. That being said, there are several foods that are known to trigger indigestion in many people, including:
- Beverages containing caffeine (coffee, tea, soft drinks)
- Carbonated drinks
- Spicy food
- Fried foods
- Foods rich in fat
- Citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruits, etc.)
- Citrus juices
- Tomatoes and tomato juice

The best diet for diverticulitis depends on whether or not you have an exacerbation, says registered nutritionist Anna Taylor, MS, RDN, LD.
Here explains the confusion about how to deal with diverticular disease through diet.
Diverticulosis: diverticulosis vs. diverticulitis
Diverticulosis means that you have polyps (small growths) called diverticula in the intestine. These polyps can exist without causing any symptoms and without you even knowing they’re there. This is called diverticulosis.
If the polyps become inflamedoinfected, they can cause symptoms such as abdominal cramping, painotenderness in the area, swelling, bloating, constipationodiarrhea. Questo è chiamato diverticulitis.
How to follow a diverticular diet

To get the most out of a high-fiber diet, Taylor also recommends:
- Drink at least 64 ounces of water a day, more if you are active.
- Exercise regularly (helps spread waste in your system).
- Eat a variety of food groups, including fiveomore servings of fruits and vegetables, three of whole grains and a serving of nutsobeans each day.

Also, talk to your doctor about a long-term plan. We have all suffered from Indigestion—medically known as dyspepsia—at least once in our lifetime. It goes without saying that this is quite uncomfortable and can make us feel quite uncomfortable. However, it is even more common in our parents and the elderly.
Indigestion unfortunately, becomes a regular feature of your life as you age. From a sedentary lifestyle to an inadequate physical condition, there are many reasons for this. It might be worrisome to see an older family member in discomfort due to it but don’t worry: it is common and controllable.
We spoke to Dr Bela Sharma, additional director, Internal Medicine, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram in order to understand why indigestion is a common phenomena with the elderly and what are the ways to manage it and put them at ease.

While talking about the causes, she mentioned: “When we talk of the elderly we’re looking at an age group above 65 years old. Stomach capacity actually decreases with age. Therefore, even a little overeating can cause discomfort. Along with this, the appetite decreases as well as the level of physical activity. These could, over time, cause indigestion.”
She further added that, “Your metabolism slows down with age and the causes of getting indigestion is higher with a low immunity.”
A lot of times, older patients have morbidness such as high blood pressureodiabetes which could make them more susceptible to indigestion. There’s also a chance that the kind of food you could digest before, you can’t anymore.
Hence, it is important to take care of your diet and analyze what kind of food your body is acceptingorejecting. So, there could be a lot of factors causing indigestion that are associated with age.
Dr Sharma suggests a few ways to manage indigestion. Let’s take a look:
1. Small but frequent meals
As age affects stomach capacity and metabolism, it is important to reduce portions of each meal but increase regularity. This will make digestion of the food easier and cut the chances of indigestion.

2. Avoid eating out
When you’re eating out, you’re taking a chance with your health. As an older person, you’re more susceptible to infections which could be caused by unsafe hygiene practices. Moreover, you can’t take a chance with the quality of the food which could have too much oilospice, making it tougher for you to digest.
3. Avoid certain foods
If you are suffering from indigestion, it is important to avoid foods that are hard to digest. Avoiding them will reduce your chances suffering from indigestion, to begin with. These include masalas, fried foods, pizzas, oeven meat such as porkolamb.

4. Check the electrolyte balance carefully
Many people try to avoid salt as they age to stay away from conditions such as hypertension. However, avoiding it altogether can turn out to be harmful. Remember, moderation is the key to everything. So, make sure you have a decent amount of salt each day and as much water as possible.
