What are the causes of acne in adults?

When I was a teenager, the acne advice I received was clear and consistent:
- Avoid fatty foods and chocolate as they cause breakouts and make existing acne worse
- Wash your face often
- Try over-the-counter topical remedies such as those containing benzoyl peroxide (Clearasil) or salicylic acid (Stridex).
By the time I got to medical school, the message had changed. I learned that the association between diet and acne was considered a myth and that what we eat has little to do with improving or worsening acne.
But a new study has changed that once again. This suggests that the diet could be contributing to acne, at least in adults.
Why does acne develop?
For many – myself included – thinking about juvenile acne is a painful exercise. But it’s worth understanding why acne develops in the first place.
Acne is thought to develop due to a combination of factors: excessive sebum production in the skin, clogged pores in the skin, bacteria in the skin, and inflammation. Hormonal changes – which occur during puberty or in a condition called polycystic ovary syndrome – and the menstrual cycle can have a big impact on acne as they affect sebum production in the skin. Some medications can cause acne (especially steroids and lithium), and hair, makeup, and other products we apply to the skin can all contribute to clogging pores. It has also been suggested that genetic factors, pollution, smoking and stress are causes or causes of acne.
And then there remains the possibility that diet matters. Certain foods can promote inflammation throughout the body, and it’s possible this triggers acne outbreaks. There are reasons to interpret these results with caution. Nutrition records may be incorrect.
