How to add ice to your cell phone

Adding an In Case of Emergency, oICE, contact to your cell phone can help emergency personnel contact your friendsoloved ones if you are badly injured in an accident and can’t speak for yourself. Journalist Edica Gonzalez explains this simple idea …
An emergency contact should be someone who knows your medical history and knows how to contact your family, such as your spouse, relative, parent, or good friend. Then, on your cell phone, create a new contact named I-C-E with the person’s name and phone number, address, and their relationship to you under notes. It’s a good idea to have at least two ICE contacts, labeled 1 and 2. If you have a password protected phone, there are ICE apps that you can add to your locked screen page that don’t require a password for emergency personnel to access. Search for “ICE” or “ICE Lock Screen” in your app store to find one that works on your phone. It’s also a good idea to keep an ICE card in your wallet in case your phone is lostobroken. Report to Z107.7, this is Edica Gonzalez.

Nobody likes to think about the possibility of serious injury in an accident, but take a moment to consider what can happen if you pass out in an accident or other catastrophe. How will the authorities or emergency personnel alert your loved ones? It may be possible to get a home phone number by tracing your car’s license plate number or by checking your license, but loved ones may not be there to answer the call.

Due to this difficulty in locating the relatives of the victims of the accident, the idea of ICE was born. The concept of ICE is simple: just program the memory of your mobile phone with the acronym ICE (“in case of emergency”) followed by the names and telephone numbers of the people you would like to receive in an emergency. For example, “ICE-1 John Doe” as a contact entry saved on the phone will alert emergency personnel to contact Mr. Smith on the number provided. With ICE-2, ICE-3, etc. you can program as many numbers as you want, so that the office numbers of the contact person and / or mobile phone are also recorded.

Launched in the U. K. in May 2005, ICE was the idea of East Anglian Ambulance Service paramedic Bob Brotchie. The idea has been promoted in a nationwide campaign in the U. K. and is gaining in popularity in the U. S. and other countries. There are commercially available stickers (or you can make your own) that you can attach to a cell phone to notify emergency personnel that there is emergency contact information in the phone’s memory. You can also put a sticker on the back of your driver’s license or other ID so rescuers know where to look for your emergency contact details.

Programming a mobile phone takes only a few minutes, but can save you and your loved ones many hours of torment in an emergency. Quick access to your close relatives, who will be able to present your medical history and any information they need, can also increase the effectiveness of emergency treatment.

Hope this is something you will never need.

This Doctor ID button can be of great importance in an emergency.

Since we almost always wear them, phones can be a valuable emergency tool. In the unfortunate event that you have an accident or someone determines that you are unconscious, you will definitely want your loved ones to know what’s going on and have a way to communicate important information about you to paramedics.

Older phones had an ICE (In Case of Emergency) contact list in the contact section of the phone, but phones have gotten smarter and now go beyond just ICE contact.

Take a few minutes now and at least set up your emergency contacts and enter any medical conditions that emergency personnel should be aware of.

Do you have a cell phone handy? Take a moment to put “ICE” next to the names of the people you want to call in an emergency.

Questo è ciò che significa "ICE" – "in emergenza".

The point is to let rescue workers, police, odoctors check your cell phone and reach the people you would want contacted if you’re in an accidentoother emergency.

Most people don’t have ICEs on cell phones, but will connect these letters to their cell phones when they find out why it matters, a new study shows.

The study will be presented today in New Orleans, at the 37th annual scientific assembly of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).

The researchers included Dr. Dennis McKenna of New York’s Albany Medical Center.

Popular news

"Spesso cerchiamo di contattare i membri della famiglia quando il paziente non è in grado di parlare con noi e il primo posto che possiamo guardare è un telefono cellulare", afferma McKenna nel comunicato stampa dell’ACEP.

"A family memberofriend is one of our best resources for learning about the patient’s medical history," he explains.

"Our study shows that people are very willing to program their phones as long as someone tells them why and how to do it, oeven does it for them," McKenna says.

Ice information

The McKenna team interviewed 423 emergency room patients.

Most of the 285 patients with cell phones were unaware of ICE. Only 76 said they had heard of ICE and 26 said they have already included ICE in their cell phones.

Most of the patients who carried cell phones agreed to learn about ICE while in the emergency room.

Subsequently, 129 patients agreed to program ICE on their cell phones while in the emergency room.

Some patients have learned to attach ICE to their cell phones. Scientists proposed introducing ICE to other patients’ cell phones.

"Once a visitor is in the emergency department, we can make the most of hisoher time by teaching something valuable," McKenna says.

"In futuro, i pazienti con ICE sui loro telefoni cellulari possono aiutarci a fornire loro il miglior trattamento possibile al momento giusto", aggiunge.
