How To Cook Egg Into Ramen

Tip #1: Hard-Boiling Your Egg

  1. Hard boiling your egg in ramen is simple. To start, add your eggs into a pot then add enough water to cover them by at least an inch.
  2. Set the eggs on high heat and allow it to come to a rolling boil. Once boiling, cover the pot then switch off the heat.
  3. Allow the pot to sit on the same burner, in the hot water for exactly ten minutes.
  4. The egg will continue to cook from the residual heat in the hot water. Cooking the egg with the heat off helps to prevent the egg from overcooking and changing color or getting too hard.
  5. Remove the eggs from the water using a slotted spoon then ser the water back on a high flame to reheat, while you submerge the eggs in cold water. This stops the cooking and makes the eggs easier to peel.
  6. Remove the shells from the egg and lightly rinse under cold running water to remove any remaining shell bits, you may have missed.
  7. When the water returns to a boil add in your ramen noodles. Allow them to cook for 3 minutes or until the noodles are to your liking. Drain the water if you prefer to have just the noodles. If you like having broth with your noodles, move on to the next step.
  8. Add in the seasoning packet contents to taste along with any vegetables or toppings, if using, then stir.
  9. Slice your egg in half then use it to top your servings of ramen. Serve hot and enjoy!

Tip #2: Doing a Soft-Boiled Egg

  1. Soft boiled eggs make look fancy on TV, but they are pretty simple to make. To start you set 2 cups of water on medium heat to come to a light boil (you want to look out for small bubbles on the surface of the water).
  2. Carefully submerge your egg into the water with the help of a spoon.
  3. Allow to gently cook on a simmer for about 7 – 8 minutes. The time here is dependent on your preference for your egg. For a more set egg allow it to cook for the full eight minutes. For a runnier egg opt for 7.
  4. Lift the egg from the water using a slotted spoon then set to chill briefly (about 30 seconds) in an ice bath, immediately after removing it from the stove. This will stop the cooking process.
  5. Return the water to the stove on high heat. When the water returns to a boil add in your ramen noodles. Allow them to cook for 3 minutes or until the noodles are to your liking. Drain the water if you prefer to have just the noodles. If you like having broth with your noodles, move on to the next step.
  6. Add in the seasoning packet contents to taste along with any vegetables or toppings, if using, then stir.
  7. Add your whole egg to your ramen or slice it close to your plate so, your yolk can run into your noodles. Enjoy it hot!

Tip #3: Poaching an Egg in Ramen

  1. Set 2 cups of water on high heat to boil. Once boiling, add in your noodles and allow them to cook until they begin separating (about a minute and a half).
  2. Add in your seasoning packet and stir to create a whirlwind type opening in your noodles.
  3. Crack your egg in the center of the whirlwind you created then switch off the heat.
  4. Do not stir. Cover the pot and allow to sit like this for about 2 minutes. The residual heat will poach the egg and finish cooking the noodles.
  5. Carefully transfer to a serving bowl and enjoy hot.

Tip #4: Try Scrambled Eggs with Ramen Noodles

  1. Set 2 cups of water on high heat to boil. Once boiling, add in your noodles and allow to cook until the noodles are cooked through (about three minutes).
  2. Stir to separate the noodles then drain to remove the broth.
  3. Crack an egg into a separate bowl and set it aside.
  4. Return your dry noodles to a skillet then season with the seasoning packet or your preferred spices.
  5. Set over high heat to fry until they become slightly crisp (about 2 minutes).
  6. Switch the heat to medium heat, lightly beat the egg you seat aside then add into the skillet.
  7. Stir often to scramble the eggs with the noodles until the egg is fully cooked (about 3 minutes). If you don’t care for wet scrambled eggs, consider cooking your eggs for twice the time. So, about 5 – 6 minutes.

  9. If you have leftovers, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. You should be able to store it like this for up to 5 days. It is important to note, however, that your noodles may swell and soften over time.

Making the Perfect Ramen Egg; Tips & Tricks

While there are certainly many different ways that you can make a soft boiled ramen egg, there really are no “wrong ways” to do it.

Want some tips and tricks? You got it!

  • Some recipes call for eggs that are room temperature (instead of refrigerated eggs) but “room temperature” can vary depending on where you are. Having said that, we recommend grabbing your eggs straight out of the fridge.
  • Larger eggs tend to work well for this type of recipe (the more the better, right?) but any kind of egg will taste absolutely incredible.
  • The perfect ramen egg has a “jammy” center, that’s soft but not too runny. Our team has found that the perfect amount of time to boil an egg for ramen is 6.5 minutes.
  • When your eggs have had their time in the ice bath, gently crack the entire surface and begin to peel, starting from the wider end, which contains the air pocket. This will make it easier to remove the shell and cause less damage to the surface of the egg.
  • Use immediately or store in the fridge, unpeeled, for up to 24 hours.

How to add an egg to ramen

If You Opt for Marinated Eggs:

If you have the time, you can marinate your eggs in advance for a little extra flair.

You can play around with different marinades- there are hundreds of recipes online- to find what you like best, but a great go-to is a simple marinade of soy sauce, minced garlic and mirin (a sweet Japanese rice wine).

We recommend that you leave your eggs soaking in the mixture overnight in the fridge, but if you’re short on time, 2-3 hours will work just fine. The longer you let your eggs marinate, the stronger the taste will be.

How to Make a Perfect Ramen Egg

Bring a pot of water to boil. There should be enough water in the pot to cover your eggs by about one inch.

While you’re waiting for your water to boil, fill a separate bowl with half ice and half water.

When your water is boiling- like, really boiling- carefully drop your eggs in and immediately set a timer for 6.5 minutes. BEWARE OF SPLASHES!

When the time is up, remove your eggs from the boiling water and gently place them in the bowl of ice water. (This will stop the cooking process, and ensures that your eggs reach their desired consistency without getting too “done.”)

After about 5 minutes, or when the eggs no longer feel hot to the touch, remove and peel.

Peel your eggs, slice them in half, and add to your warm bowl of Mike’s Mighty steamed ramen noodles!

Perfect Instant Pot Soft Boiled Eggs

If you have an instant pot, you already know how great this kitchen appliance can be. But did you know that you can also use your instant pot to make soft boiled eggs? Prepare to be amazed. When it comes to Instant Pot Soft Boiled Eggs, there are two methods; one is for low pressure and one is for high.

Pro tip: try experimenting with one egg at a time, until you find what method you like the best! Finding the perfect technique for cooking soft boiled eggs in the Instant Pot requires very little effort, and is absolutely worth it.

Instant Pot Soft Boiled Eggs: Low Pressure Method

  1. Pour COLD water into your Instant Pot (use 1 cup for the 6 quart and 1.5 cups for the 8 quart) and put the eggs on the trivet/basket. Close the lid and make sure the valve is set to “sealing.”
  2. Set Cook Time for 3 minutes. While they cook, prepare a bowl of ice water on the side.
  3. When the timer beeps, release the pressure by knocking the valve (with a wooden spoon or tongs) to vent.
  4. Carefully remove the eggs from the instant pot with a slotted spoon and transfer them to the ice water. Let them sit for about 5 minutes, or until the eggs have cooled off.
  5. Peel, and enjoy your PERFECT soft boiled eggs!

If you would like your ramen eggs set a little harder than soft boiled eggs- but not quite as firm as hard boiled- follow these instructions:

Instant Pot Soft Boiled Eggs: High Pressure Method

  1. Same as above, but use High Pressure for 1 minute.
  2. Cook for 3 minutes on high pressure.
  3. Let pressure release naturally for 5 minutes.
  4. Remove the eggs from the pressure cooker and place in an ice-water bath.
  5. Remove from the ice bath once cool enough to handle, about 3-5 minutes.
  6. Use immediately or store in the fridge, unpeeled, for up to 24 hours.

I was using some variant Veg. Ramen Noodles (The one with the noodle brick and the TasteMaker) and wished to add some “real” protein in the form of egg.

I cooked the Ramen as follows:

  • I got the water to a boil and added the brick
  • After about a minute, I added the TasteMaker and stirred
  • I added 1 egg and stirred.

However, once I added the egg, the whole noodle mixture got congealed and semi-solid and no matter how long I let it be, it didn’t change form.

I inferred that I should have added the egg just before I was ready to take it off. This reinforced my inference. However, I tried again and this time, I added the egg 30 seconds before I was ready to take it off but now it tasted weird.

I wanted something more like scrambled eggs in Noodles.

Note: As always, I am on a student budget.

EDIT: A minute ago, I found a video on youtube which stated that I should throw away the extra water a minute after I add the egg. This doesn’t seem right, does it?

Here are two really good, really easy ways to make ramen with eggs:

The easiest way is to just boil an egg and toss it in. If you eat this a lot, you can boil a few and keep them in the fridge. They should stay good for about 3-5 days. If you like liquid yolk in your soup, soft boil the eggs (boiled between about 3 and 9 minutes, to taste). Just cook your ramen, peel the egg, and drop it in for about 90 seconds right before you eat it. Cut the egg in half if you like. It is best to use older eggs for this. What I like to do personally (and remember this comes from the internet, so listen to me at your own risk) is use them for boiling if they have passed the expiration date, since that date (in the US) is based on the thickness of the egg white, not food safety. Older eggs don’t stick to the shell when they are boiled, but new eggs do.

The slightly harder (but tastier) way is to poach the egg in the ramen. To do that, cook your ramen, and make sure you have tasted your broth and you like it. If you don’t like the seasoning pack from the ramen, you can add any combination of soy sauce, grated ginger, crushed garlic, oyster sauce, miso paste, sriracha, etc. There are lots of tasty, cheap things to add depending on where you live. Try them! Anyway, back to the eggs. You want to cook the ramen until is is soft but not cooked all the way. Turn the heat down to almost nothing. Crack a very fresh egg (fresh eggs have a nice thick white) into the pan once it stops bubbling. Give it a few minutes. If you want to feel busy, you can spoon the hot broth onto the top of the egg to cook it faster. If you are particular about how cooked it is, jab a knife into the middle of the yolk and check it out.

Here is the last egg and ramen tip: My friends and I just called this noodle slop, but it tastes good, uses fresh at least a few fresh ingredients, and is super cheap. Cook some ramen noodles and drain them. In a big skillet, add some oil and fry some combination of celery, onions, chopped cabbage, ginger, fresh chili peppers, garlic, matchstick carrots, bell peppers, chopped scallions, cucumber, zucchini, etc. You want to cut them to the size you get in Chinese takeout and cook them until they get a bit soft. Then, scramble one egg per ramen package in with the veggies. When the egg is cooked, add the noodles and mix it all together. Add some salt and pepper, or the seasoning from the ramen if you are into the whole MSG thing. It is like cheap chow mein.

Poaching the egg is the lazy option and the option that I take. Basically crack open the egg and very gently let it slip into the boiling broth 2-3 minutes before you take it off the heat. Don’t stir or anything because then it‘ll turn into an egg drop soup.

When you remove the broth from the heat, crack an egg into the hot broth and stir slowly.
